Would you consider this cheating? (+ another question)

I recently traded for a 24-year-old ****1/2 with ***** potential. I was playing around with a contract extension seeing how much a young guy with that much talent would command since he's going to demand a lot when he's up for arbitration (next year I think).

He said he'd agree to a 10-year deal worth $1,100,000 over those 10-years. Obviously it'd be an AMAZING deal for me for such a great player.

But would it be taking advantage of the system if I signed him to that contract? I know I tried doing that with other young players his age and they wold laugh it off.

Also, I think I know the answer, but do manangers/coaches also get better/progress like players do? I have a young coach in my system that has decent coach ratings. I want to hold onto him if he'll improve in his areas.

EDIT: One more question...Joe Mauer is about to retire and I think he'd be a great coach. Is there anyway I can make him a coach upon retirement as a player?

Depends on how you play the game and how you want your world. I typically set up some house rules (no signing guys before they hit arb is one) to avoid taking advantage of the system but if you are comfortable with the contract, go for it.

I don't think you can "cheat" in a single-player game. It's OOTP, and you can play it your way, and do stuff how you like. Do I think that contract is ridiculous, and would I give it out? No. But I'm not against you doing it, you're not hacking the game or anything.

As others said play the game however it is fun for you. For me I usually try to restrict contracts and trades to things I see plausible.

If its not an exploit then I don't see how it would be cheating. You said that you tried it with other players and it didn't work right?

And coaches do get better in ratings. Ive seen an ex player start from basically 0 ratings to having some ratings listed as great when I sim another 10 years or so.

10 years @ 1.1 million each might be cheating, if it is 2013. If it is 1965, then, probably not.

I read that and it says you will pay him $110,000 per year. Is there no minimum salary in your league?

If it's $1,100,000 per year the the deal is worth $11,000,000 over 10 years.

Which is it?

No one else answered you Mauer question. When he retires go to his profile and along the bottom you can click Actions? and turn him into a coach. In 13 he had very high coaching ratings. Managed the Reds to 2 WS titles in 2033 & 2035.

Oh ok. I didn't know you had to be in commish mode to do it.

Pretty much.

Again, much depends on the game year. If it's 2013, that does look like a very odd contract.

As others have said, it is your game play it how you want. My observation on it though is that you have questions about doing it or you wouldn't have asked for other people's opinions. Seems to me you are in some way asking others' to justify doing it.

If you are comfortable with it go for it.

If the game allows it, it's allowable, IMHO. I don't know what your league finances look like, but given the possibility that he could be a 27-28 year old bust making 1mil a year plus for the next six years in AAA, it's not without risk. Of course you could always offer up a trade for him if that occurs. Echoing others, up to you; your game.

if it was me in my league, a solo league, and I was able to get a guy to agree to that contract, I would sign it up in a heart beat. A stud who is locked up for that small of salary for 10 years....there is literally no down side to that. Even if he busts out, paying him a little over a million a year will not hamper your team. Does it seem odd? Yeah, but if I got that opportunity in the game, I would consider it a fair shake and would do it no doubt.

Seems like a great deal, maybe he's married to a shopaholic and wants to limit what she can spend?

Salvador Perez is a 23 year old catcher who has a career OPS+ of 110 in 750+ PAs and is a superb defensive catcher in EVERY area (including a great pitch framer) and is signed to an insanely team-friendly contract...so, it does happen in real life. I see no reason why this would be cheating...there is always the chance your player turns into a huge turd and the contract doesn't work out.

Evan Longoria is another example of a stud player who signed a very team-friendly deal.
