Too many players in Historical Lineup and Transaction League

Playing 1988 as a single season replay with real transactions and lineups. I have no "reserve" roster and everyone on the roster available as potential pinchhitters and relievers. what did I do wrong in the league setup? Can I just have available players who were active that day in history?

Not that I'm aware of.

When Historical Lineup first came out you set your 25 man roster normally. (There is no 'historical active roster' option.) If someone was supposed to play that day and was on the reserve roster, then the AI would put in a different player.

I imagine just putting everyone on the active roster was their way around that.
