Time Machine Boxing Association - HG Wells Commisioner

Boxing through much of the 1800's was in disarray, but near the end of the 19th century an eccentric inventor/writer named HG Wells pulled the governing bodies of the world together to create the World Boxing Association.

The WBA board was made up of representatives of the major regional organizations, all with their own titles.

NABF - Governs North and South America
USBA - A companion to the NABF, but governs the USA only
EBU - All of Europe and the middle east
UKBC - Restricted to the United Kingdom only
PBC - Governs all of the pacific rim

Fearing for the safety of smaller pugilists, the WBA banned all fighters under 175 pounds, as it feared only the heartiest should be allowed to compete. All who met this qualification were considered able bodied and included men whom the mysterious Mr. Wells claimed to have procured through his patented time machine. A claim that for the most part was merely humored by his peers, though some considered it to have merit.

The initial WBA World Rankings were released at the beginning of January and through the vote of the board, Gerry Cooney and Francesco Damiani were selected to compete for the inaugural World Title, while an elimination bout between Sam Langford and John Tate would decide the winners first challenger.

January 1900

Feature fights January-1900
Francisco Damiani 30-0-0 (28) VS Gerry Cooney 25-1-0 (22) WBA Title
Entering the fight many questioned Damiani's status as top contender to the vacant WBA title, but those questions were answered in very short order. From the opening bell, Damiani rattled Cooney, while managing to avoid the latters vaunted power. Damiani finally dropped Cooney in the 7th with a hook and then put the battered New Yorker away with a two fisted assault to puncuate the one sided match.
Damiani KO 7 Cooney - Wins WBA World Title
Sam Langford 29-1-0 (25) VS John Tate 25-1-0 (23)
Dubbed as a title eliminator to determine the first opponent of the Damiani / Cooney scrap, Tate had the perfect game plan, keeping the shorter Langford at bay with his jab and easily taking the 1st round. Langford proved a quick study and took the fight inside, battering Tate's ribs in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, pulling the latters hands down. At this point he unleashed an uppercut that left Tate cold at the 2:57 mark
Langford KO 3 Tate

February 1900

The crowning of a new UKBC Champion highlights the months results

Feature fights February-1900
Joe Goss 20-4-0 (4) VS Jack Gardner 23-0-0 (23) UKBC Title
Joe Goss went into his first defense of the UKBC title hoping to outbox the unbeaten challenger and avoid his power. A noble plan, but Gardner was able to hold serve in this area, while landing some stinging right hands, one of which decked Goss in the 6th. The champ came back and cut Gardner in the 7th, but could not capitalize as Gardner hammered him. scoring a second and final knockdown at 2:12 of the 12th.
Gardner KO 12 Goss - Wins UKBC Title
Mike Tyson 16-1-0 (16) VS Fred Russell 20-4-1 (14)
Russell came into the bout promising to take the action to Mike Tyson, yet after tasting a Tyson hook to the liver in the first 30 seconds of the bout, those plans changed. Tyson, sensing Russell was looking to survive went into attack mode. Trapping him in a corner and hammering away, Tyson split his gloves with a ferocious uppercut that deposited Russell on the canvas, where he was counted out at 2:44
Tyson KO 1 Russell

Elmer Ray 19-2-0 (18) © vs Chris Byrd 17-0-0 (7) USBA Title
Tommy Burns 22-0-0 (17) vs Randall 'Tex' Cobb 20-1-0 (18)
Burns and Ray, ranked 17th and 14th respectively will look to vault into the top 10, though neither has an easy path as the slick boxing Chris Byrd will look to lift Ray's United States belt and Tex Cobb is sure to test the unbeaten Canadian with his rough and tumble style.

March 1900

Another regional title changes, Tommy Burns looks to crack the rankings and Michael Spinks calls out Yankee Sullivan after the latter takes out his brother, while Denver Ed Martin makes people take notice after a big win over Oliver McCall.

Feature fights March-1900
Elmer Ray 19-2-0 (18) © vs Chris Byrd 17-0-0 (7) USBA Title
Byrd is often maligned for his less than exciting style and Ray came out looking to crowd him, doing effective body work early in the encounter. Byrd controlled the action when he kept Ray at bay with the Jab, but Elmer did great job cutting off the ring and working inside. Unfortunately, the USBA champ ran out of gas and was dropped in the 12th and 15th, with the latter giving Byrd the 143-142 advantage.
Byrd Win 15 Ray - Wins USBA Title
Tommy Burns 22-0-0 (17) vs Randall 'Tex' Cobb 20-1-0 (18)
A wild brawl that saw Burns come out swinging, battering Cobb in the 1st though the big man seemed impervious to Tommy's blows. Cobb showed well in the next 3 rounds, bulling Burns about the ring, but he was out of gas by the 6th. From that point forward Burns used Cobb's head as target practice and though Cobb was never in serious trouble, he was outclassed as Burns takes it easily (98-93)
Burns Win 10 Cobb
Other Results
Shazzon Bradley Win 10 Bob Stallings
Yankee Sullivan TKO 5 Leon Spinks
Erv Sarlin KO 7 Larry Alexander
Tom Hyer Win 10 Juergen Blin

Denver Ed Martin Win 10 Oliver McCall
Bobby Jordan Win 10 Guy Casale
Al Bray Win 10 Mike Hunter
James Pritchard KO 8 Joe Byrd
Two more big title defense in April as Damiani wastes no time putting his world title on the line against the dangerous Sam Langford. Down under Bill Squires will defend the PBC strap against the young upstart David Izon, plus other top contenders in action.

April Feature Fights
Francesco Damiani 31-0-0 (29) © vs Sam Langford 30-1-0 (26) WBA Title
Bill Squires 27-3-1 (22) © vs David Izon 11-0-0 (11) PBC Title

The quarterly rankings will be released at the beginning of April and early word is there will be some surprises in the top 15.

After Chris Byrd's razor thin victory over Elmer Ray, we now have no reigning champions with a successful defense. Big news for the coming months include Michael Spinks announced defense of his NABF title against Larry Donald in May, as well as a potential eliminator for a WBA world title shot between Sam McVey and Oscar Bonavena.

Across the pond Jem Mace, whose only loss in the last 5 years has been to Gerry Cooney has challenged Jack Gardner for his UK belt, stating the Champion has made his name against no names and mollycoddles. Gardner's camp has yet to respond.

April 1900

The curse of the first time defense continues as two more Champions fall.

Feature fights April-1900
Francesco Damiani 31-0-0 (29) © VS Sam Langford 30-1-0 (26) WBA Title
Damiani fought with confidence in the 1st, taking the round as Langford appeared tight. The challenger relaxed and took Damiani to school in rounds 2 through 5, before the champion rallied in the 6th and 7th. Langford surged over the next few rounds, before a rally by Damiani in 12th quelled the tide. The 14th saw Langford turn up the heat and a relentless two fisted assault brought the end at 2:49.
Langford TKO 14 Damiani - Wins WBA World Title
Bill Squires 27-3-1 (22) © VS David Izon 11-0-0 (11) - PBC Title
Many questioned how Izon would fare against the experienced champion, but after a slow start fought Squires on equal terms. Both fighters had their moments over the first 8 stanzas before Izon took over in the 9th, rocking Squires with a wicked right hand. From that point on Squires seemed to lose his will and Izon dropped him in the 11th, with the fight being waved off as an unsteady Squires arose at 2:21.
Izon TKO 11 Squires - Wins PBC Title
Other Results
Bill Marquart Win 10 Allen Smith
Marvin Hart KO 5 George Rooke
Quinn Navarre Win 10 John Scholes
Rahman Ali TKO 7 Matt Hicks
Jimmy Adamick Win 10 Chuck Wepner
Dave Johnson Win 10 Charlie Haghey
John Tate TKO 7 Paul Journee
James J Woody TKO 9 Sam Sexton
Mike Schreck KO 10 Joe Coburn
Tom Sayers Win 10 Jeff Shelburg
Darroll Wilson TKO 3 Mike Morrissey
Gerry Cooney KO 2 Jim Jeffords
Jim Flynn Win 10 Art Jimmerson
George Mostardini TKO 3 Jim Dunn
Mel Turnbow Win 10 Carmine Vingo
May Feature Fights
Michael Spinks 19-0-0 (16) © vs Larry Donald 24-1-0 (16) NABF Title
Sam McVey 24-2-0 (23) vs Oscar Bonavena 24-2-0 (21)
Langford only led Damiani 124-123 at the time of the stoppage and never had the Italian down, but the Champion had nothing left in the tank and could not defend himself. Izon's win was much more decisive and it thrusts the inexperienced puncher into the spotlight.

Fans are already salivating at a potential McVey / Langford scrap in August or September if McVey can get guy the rugged Bonavena next month.

May 1900

Spinks breaks the jinx of defending champions!

Feature fights May-1900
Michael Spinks 19-0-0 (16) © vs Larry Donald 24-1-0 (16) NABF Title
After being mauled in the 1st, Spinks took Donald to task over the next 3 rounds, tattoing him at will. With things well in hand, a hard right dropped Spinks in the 5th and the after a sluggish 6th, both men went at it with a purpose through the 12th, with things too close to call. The final 3 cantos went to Spinks however as Donald faded and he capped it with a knockdown in the 15th, retaining his belt 144-140
Spinks win 15 Donald - Retains NABF Title
Sam McVey 24-2-0 (23) vs Oscar Bonavena 24-2-0 (21)
A wildly anticipated brawl between the fearsome looking McVey and the rugged Bonevena never materialized as McVey shook Bonevena with a vicious right 40 seconds into the fight and the Argentinian never recovered. Though he was never off his feet, Bonavena absorbed a horrific beating, culminating in a one-sided 4th that saw the bout stopped at 2:30, with Bonavena defenseless in his own corner.
McVey TKO 4 Bonavena

The McVey beatdown was both shocking and brutal, as he out landed Bonavena 158 - 38 over 3+ rounds, and will surely make others take notice of the powerful McVey.

June's feature fights will determine if Davidson and Mavrovic are as spectacular as their glossy records indicate.

Big fan of the new WBA champ Langford here. Whose his only loss to so far?

A 10 round decision loss to Sam Hurst, who was 15-0-0 (8) at the time. The fight took place at Southampton, England on 11-2-1898. Langford went into the fight 17-0-0 (16).

He never did avenge the loss and has no reason to now as Hurst is currently 19-4-1 (9) and has lost 3 of his last 5 to the likes of Toakipa Tasefa, Oscar Bonavena and Jack Munroe. All 10 round decision losses. Hurst's other (and first) defeat was also by 10 round decision to Michael Spinks in September of 1899.

June 1900

Another Title changes hands and questions remain about Davidson.

Feature fights June-1900
Len Harvey 18-2-2 (10) © VS Zeljko Mavrovic 31-1-2 (25) - EBU Title
Things started slowly, but Mavrovic struck like lightening, dropping Harvey in the 2nd with a right. The knockdown kept Harvey on the defensive as Mavrovic built a lead, before a brief rally by Harvey in the 7th and 8th. From that point on the power of Mavrovic took over and he wore Harvey down with a relentless body attack and ran away with the fight late, taking the EBU belt 147-138, proving he is indeed a force.
Mavrovic Win 15 Harvey - Wins EBU Title
Embrell Davidson 25-0-0 (24) vs Bearcat Wright 18-2-1 (13)
Davidson comig out party against the tough as nails Wright was a foul filled affair, with much of the action being contested on the inside. Davidson started well, but between rounds 3 and 8 there was little to choose as neither man could sustain an advantage. In the 9th Wright had a bout deducted after his third low blow and after starting the 10th strong, he went low again, getting disqualified immediately.
Davidson DQ 10 Wright

John J Dwyer Win 10 Erv Sarlin
Mike Hunter Win 10 Toakipa Tasefa
Joe Goss TKO 1 Dan Kiser
Brad Simmons KO 2 Jack Scales
Craig Payne DQ 9 Terry Anderson
July Feature Fights
Jack Gardner 24-0-0 (24) © VS Jem Mace 22-2-0 (5) UKBC Title
Denver Ed Martin 20-0-0 (14) VS Tommy Burns 23-0-0 (17)

Several bag names in action outside our feature fights as Tyson takes care of business and Elmer Ray hands Squires his second straight loss, in what may prove a crushing blow to his contender status. Davidson showed some flaws, but came away with the ugly DQ win over Wright, which will keep him in the top 15.

A big fight for Jack Gardner as a win will set up a possible EBU Title contest with Mavrovic, which would give Gardner an opportunity to be the first two belt holder. Burns and Martin will determine who is a legitimate contender and who is not when they meet in a battle of young unbeatens.

July 1900

Gardner keeps KO streak alive, while Burns wins pivotal clash of contenders.

Feature fights July-1900
Jack Gardner 24-0-0 (24) © VS Jem Mace 22-2-0 (5) UKBC Title
Mace appeared tentative early and it allowed Gardner to tee off and build an early lead. When Mace was active he was able to counter effectively and displayed a superior jab to the champion. Mace was not consistent however and spent far too much time flat footed, which eventually allowed Gardner to catch him and send him crashing to the canvas in both the 12th and the 14th, the latter for good at 2:41
Gardner KO 14 Mace - Retains UKBC Title
Denver Ed Martin 20-0-0 (14) VS Tommy Burns 23-0-0 (17)
After a close first round, Burns nearly ended it in the 2nd with a crushing uppercut to the temple. Martin barely survived the round, but came back strong and fought Burns evenly over the next 4 stanzas. A right put Martin down again late in the 7th and he appeared shot, but once again he came back strong and actually had the better of the final 3 rounds, falling just short in a heroic effort 96-93.
Burns Win 10 Martin
Other Results
Joe Coburn Win 10 Fernely Feliz
Al Jones Win 10 Steve Taylor
Sam McVey TKO 4 Matt Hicks
Jim Jeffords KO 10 Mike McCoole
Jimmy Adamick TKO 2 Rahman Ali
Bernard Thebault TKO 4 Joe Byrd
James J Woody Win 10 John Scholes
Jim Flynn Win 10 Sam Sexton
Cliff Couser Win 10 Massa Kendrick
Mike Schreck TKO 4 James Grima
Chuck Wepner TKO 8 Mike Morrissey
Oscar Bonavena KO 3 Jeff Shelburg
Larry Donald TKO 6 Randall Cobb
Jack Taylor Win 10 Paul Journee
Bobby Jordan Win 10 Mel Turnbow
August Feature Fights
Chris Byrd 18-0-0 (7) © VS Al Bray 24-1-1 (17) USBA Title
Francesco Damiani 31-1-0 (29) VS John Tate 26-2-0 (24)

Mace exposed some holes in Gardner's game and only trailed 124-123 at the time of the stoppage, he was simply worn down by the bigger champion. Gardner's next move will likely be a challenge for Mavrovic's EBU title, and though he showed he can be out boxed, his power is always something to be wary of.

Martin's effort against Burns surprised many as his level of opposition had been questionable. If not for the knockdowns it would have been anybody's fight, but Martin's chin betrayed him. Damiani chooses to take a big risk in his first fight back since losing the title, but win against Tate will propel him right back into the title picture.

Langford Defense Set

The camp of current WBA World Champion Sam Langford has announced that Langford will defend his title in September against NABF Champion Michael Spinks, who is unbeaten in 20 fights with 16 knockouts. Langford 31-1-0 (27) has indicated he feels superior to the rangy Spinks and plans to tenderize him with his superior infighting skills.

Spinks, who retains his NABF title should he lose, says that Langford is in for a rude awakening, which he expects will occur after he plants the Canadian, whom he calls "Lil' Stubby" with his lethal right hand. "My plan is to win the Worlds Title and relinquish my NABF Title to the second raters." Exclaimed Spinks.

Left out in all of this is Sam McVey, who sensing a go with Langford was not in the cards, took out Matt Hicks in 4 rounds this past week in Washington. Upon learning of Langford's plan to fight Spinks, issued a challenge to the winner to meet in January for any stake deemed acceptable.
