"Missing next few games for personal issues"

Becomes 13 MONTHS???

I understand missing a few games, but the timer for this event surely shouldn't extend so long.

Allan Baird ran into this bug, too. He wants Zack Greinke back.

Nick Esasky basically had a CEI for personal issues.

Didn't Greinke miss an entire season dealing with his anxiety issues? Nevermind, I just seen Raidergoo already mentioned Greinke.

Yeah, it's not that unrealistic. Depression / Nervous Breakdowns / Anxiety issues could easily be even career ending.

"Missing next few games for personal issues"

Joey Votto went on the DL for depression after his dad died. I believe it was 2010.

This was my first thought too, although Vertigo is closer to an injury than a personal issue per se.

The question here, at least as it pertains to real life, is what rules and procedures a club has to follow when dealing with a player with 'personal' issues. In the minors there's the temporarily inactive list, but there is no counterpart to that at the major league as far as I recall. There is the bereavement list (3-7 days) for dealing with the death of a close relative, and the paternity list (1-3 days) for dealing with the birth of a child. Beyond that, I think things would have to be handled through the disabled list.

Dontrelle Willis would tell you that there's nothing unrealistic about that.

True, but Esasky suffered from vertigo, a medical condition. The news feed for the league featured my manager stating that we'd be without him for a few games, not for more than a season. I have to think this is a bug.

That was Tourette's Syndrome and it knocked him out for years. Who knows how great his career could've been.

The point is it is not unrealistic for a manager to think a player will be back soon from "personal issues" and the reality being a different story. If you don't like it, you can always use the editor in Commish Mode to change things.

I did just that. The player in question was John Wetteland, and he never missed time for off the field issues. I play with historical transactions and don't want history changed so drastically. Had Wetteland missed 13 months, he wouldn't have been included in the ill-fated deal that LA made for Eric Davis, and might have stuck around the Dodgers in the 90's and closed a lot of games.

Wow, all these examples and mine was the only one you felt compelled to respond to specifically. I am honored! Thanks!

Well, I believe it was the first one in the thread to mention Esasky. As I am replaying the 1990 season at the moment, I remember quite well what fate befell Esasky that season. Too bad, because he had been fairly productive for Cincinnati for many years (I've managed every season since 1983).

Not at all. As has been mentioned, there are numerous examples of players who missed a significant amount of time due to personal issues - which certainly could include non baseball medical conditions such as vertigo. Wouldn't be the first, or last, time a player had a medical condition that they kept private by calling it a personal issue. That could also entail any number of other things, including family problems as well. Players have been known to take time off to deal with ailing spouses or children. Even if the manager said he'd only be out a few days, that could easily be explained as the player decided to take more time off for whatever reason. You have to be able to have a little creativity and be able to kind of fill in the blanks in some situations in this game. Not everything will make perfect sense in the way the game presents it, but you can make it work in your mind if you want to.

I can't blame you for changing it, especially if you're playing a historical sim, but it's definitely not a bug.
