Playoff Roster blues

I'm seriously confused about the Playoff Roster situation. The link on the OOTP manual says "no info yet" on this topic.

Anyway, I thought that any player on your 25-man roster or DL on the day before Sept. 1 roster expansion would be eligible for the playoffs - ?

I won the division and when it came time to finalize the Playoff Roster, I was prevented from replacing some injured players. I was only allowed to carry 11 batters, but 14 pitchers - ?? I was using the "Playoff Rosters" tab under the "Transactions" to see who the "eligible" players were. Also tried right-clicking and selecting "Transacitons" on players I wanted to get on the Roster, but the option wasn't available.

Did I just badly mismanage something here ? (Certainly possible!) What should I do in the future to prevent this kind of thing from happening? Going into the playoffs with 11 bats is far from ideal...

Are the injured players on the DL? Are any of the injured players on the 60 day DL?

Your playoff eligible roster is the 25 players plus whoever was on the DL as of Aug 31. Using a simple example let's say on Aug 31 you had 3 players on the DL (major league DL) and for arguments sake let's say they are all pitchers. Another thing to note is that your active roster as of Sept 1 is X/40 (you may or may not have a full 40 man roster).

That means you have a pool of 28 playoff eligible players. Those players must be on the active roster. During September lets say that 3 position players get injured. The replacements from the minors are not playoff eligible. Two of the injured pitchers come back by seasons end so you have 4 players on the DL which means your pool of playoff eligible players is 28-4=24.

Now what you should see on the playoff roster tab on the bottom right box is a note that tells you how many players you can select from the active roster (X/40) and put onto the playoff roster. That number should match the number of players you have on the DL unless you have players on the 60-day DL. This is a bug. Since players on the 60-day DL are not on the 40 man active roster you will not see a number that matches.

This is not a problem if the 60-day players have used up the 60-days. On the transactions screen drag and drop the player onto the active roster (no other roster will work). Then drag them back to the 15-day DL Go back to the playoff roster tab and you should see the number updated because the injured players are on the active roster. That number from this example should be 4. A player who is on the 60-day with time left on it will not give you a replacement player unless you can get him on the 40-man. This has been a problem for me in the past.

Getting the replacement players on the roster can be confusing. If you have 25 players on the "playoff roster" top left box you must temporarily drag some (4) players to the the top right box (playoff eligible) then drag the replacement players from the bottom left box (active roster) to the playoff roster above. Only after this is complete should you you then drag and drop players right and left to set up the 25 man playoff roster.

Confused yet?

The best way around this is:

Don't put any player on the 60-day DL after July. Anybody on the 60 day from before that time should be put on the active roster in September then returned to the 15 day or just left on the roster until season end.

Don't put anyone injured in September on the DL. You have 40 players so this should not be a problem.

Any player you may want to use as a replacement must be on the 40-man roster.

Sorry for the length it's much easier to see this on the screen.

Many thanks indeed for this explanation! I will copy and paste this into my personal "How to Do Things in OOTP" file so I don't make the same mistakes come end of next season.

Really wish I had understood all this before Sept. 1 rolled around -- particularly how players on the DL (and *when* they go on and come off the DL) factors into things.

The injury timing in this case was particularly bad, as I lost one of my best players in mid-August for 8 weeks -- (and he had *just* accepted the 6-season $19M/per extension I had offered him... sometimes it seems like OOTP has a cruel sense of humor when it comes to triggering injuries...)

So, it seemed like there was a slight chance that player might be healthy in time for the later-round playoffs. I wasn't sure how to handle this though. I put him on the 15-day DL. Then when it came time to set Playoff Rosters and I found I couldn't get players onto it, I tried transferring him to the 60-day DL. Nothing seemed to work to allow me to get 13 position players on my roster.

Anyway, I botched this badly. I have exactly 3 players who can play OF positions on my Playoff Roster. This will probably not end well.

I'll just note that in real life a player on the 60-day DL may not be eligible for the playoffs depending on when he was placed on that DL.

As to the rest of your post, I really wish OOTP could operate closer to the real-life rules. It seems overly complicated compared to real life (as well as lacking flexibility)...

It would be nice - at a minimum - if we could undo bad/buggy AI playoff roster management via commissioner mode, including being able to remove a player from the DL before he's scheduled to come off, much like we can magically heal an injured player via the editor.

Thank you so much for this info. I've been wondering how the playoff roster really worked for all these years playing OOTP. Almost every time I make the playoffs I have to go in with 24/25 players on my roster due to the little quirks and such of the playoff roster. Now I know better.

Please keep in mind that this is how I get around the issues of the playoff roster. It may not be standard procedure.

OOTP does not follow MLB RL rules. See this primer from last season.

I agree with your second. point completely.

You'll have to help me with the first point. I've read everything I can find and see nothing suggesting a 60-day DL player would be ineligible. In fact the link above addresses the freebie all teams get with players on the 60-day DL. IRL they are playoff eligible by definition AFAIK.

Upon further review I misspoke somewhat. The way it works like this: a player placed on the 60-day DL after August 1st is ineligible for post-season play until such time as he has been inactive for at least 60 days prior to the start of a post-season series. Additionally, such players are ineligible to be replaced by a minor league player if still injured and unable to play when a post-season series begins.

These strictures do not apply to players transferred to the 60-day DL after August 1st.

Why?

Edit

Doesn't really matter. I assume that all teams know this and would not put a player on the 60-day DL because of that.

At least, not if they have any expectation that he might be healthy by the time the post-season rolls around.

If you magically heal the player, will the AI take him off the DL?
