Rising from the Crashes: The UPBBC

Continual crashes really screwed the backed up files, of my last dynasty so, rather than pick up and continue after losing 5 seasons, I decide a fresh start was the way to go. You know, new computer, new beginning.

Well, not entirely a new beginning. A reboot, and not a gritty one either. It is Earth-DL12 or DLsomethingorother. I really liked the structure I had built for my “Major League” it felt fairly natural to me, and I’ve always had grand plans for “Independent Leagues” to populate this universe. The evolution of the clubs will be the same in my last dynasty. Hopefully I can get past 1885 this time around.

Using the same league setup and evaluation I used last time.

Most of the stuff that will be different in the universe (well, other than all new players) will be stuff you as reader would not notice. I’ve found, for example, when moving/folding clubs between divisions/leagues, the first day of the preseason is better than January 1. Behind the curtain things can be boring, so no reason to list too many examples.

If some of the post read as familiar, well, it is because there will be a couple (such as the next one) which have been pulled from my last dynasty and edited then reposted here. No sense in recreating the wheel. I will probably try to flesh some of the ideas out to help bring all X of us more into the universe. I feel the reporting style I was getting into the last couple of season was doing a better job of presenting the statistical outline of the world, so I will continue to build on that foundation. Heck, I might even give a go at trying to develop a narrative or characters. In theory, if we really do learn from our mistakes, this will be my best dynasty yet.

If you have been with me before, thank you for rejoining this reboot. If this is your first time with me, I hope you find this engaging.

Thanks as always to cephasjames whose amazing logo collection provides almost all the league and team logos I use. Thanks to Gern44 for the UPBBC logo, txranger for the logo for our upcoming Canadian league and The Game for finding and sharing the Glassblowers logo.

Stop me if you've heard this one before

This is an edited version of the original start of my previous dynasty. Reading it is purely optional, but background is always good. Especially if I decide to actually develop a storyline of some kind.

Key points of divergence in our world:

1805: England: House of Lords affirms Commons' Abolition of Slavery
1807: Despite Jefferson's signing a ban on slavery importation, England refuses to purchase Southern cotton
1810-1812: War of 1812 moves up two years
1812: Treaty of Ghent signed, virtually the same document as our world, a major difference being a US concession to end slavery.
1820: Missouri Compromise starts a 10 year plan to free the slaves in the south.
1828: Nullification Crisis leads to limited Civil War in South Carolina and parts of Georgia and North Carolina.

So no massive American Civil War in the 1860s, the rush west is led by newly freed slaves and race relations (by 1871) are about what they were in the 1920s-30s in our world. Things aren't great, but there is a bit more economic freedom for the ex-slaves due to the movement west and we have (as will be exhibited by our leagues) a higher degree of integration in society than our real 20s-30s had.

So there is how we come to have fully integrated clubs in the 1870s.

Our baseball pre-history outline:

1857: The Union of Base Ball Clubs and Players (UBBCP) is formed by several top New York area teams. The Brooklyn NY Excelsiors are proclaimed the first “National Champion” of baseball. There had been championships and tournaments before 1857, what marks the UBBCP was the clubs announced before the playing season they would crown a national champion.

1859: First non-New York City area clubs are admitted to UBBCP, representing Albany and Hartford.

1861: First “western” clubs from Pittsburgh and Eastern Ohio admitted. First non-New York champion, the Philadelphia PA Spot-Ons.

1862: Though an “Amateur” organization, the earliest evidence of professionalism is found in the ledgers of UBBCP power, the Manhattan NY 21s. Hurler Max McQuisten is shown having been paid $15 for “excellence in the box”. First Chicago area clubs join UBBCP.

1865: UBBCP reaches apex of membership, with over 320 clubs represented at the year’s Winter Convention.

It should be important to note the UBBCP was not a governing body. It was a professional association. Club sponsors and players would mingle at the convention looking for a teams to play for or against. Committees on rules and other such concerns were formed each year, but none of the conclusions held any official weight. The Union was important, but most clubs had neither the time nor money for such organizations. Things as common as pitching distances were still not the same at all parks. Arguments over rules were common.

1866: A move by the older Eastern clubs to expel several Chicago and Ohio clubs for 'overt and unrepentant professionalism' fails. The clubs leveling the charge were paying players as well, but as the Eastern clubs still wanted to pay the same wages when there was no competition for talent. The “Western” clubs were more willing to bid up the price of the best players. The trickle of talent west would explode after the events in 1867.

The balance of power in baseball is moving towards Chicago and Ohio. The 1866 National Championship game was an All-Chicago affair. The final UBBCP titles would be all be claimed by clubs west of Cleveland.

1867: Lead by New York area clubs, the Northeastern clubs, still clinging to an 'amateur ideal' walk out (Though many were paying players even after the defection) of the UBBCP convention. The Atlantic Amateur Base Ball Association (AABBA) is formed. City of Boston bans professional sports within its city limits.

1868: Tensions between the proponents of the Professional game and the guardians of Amateurism were at their apex. Even the AABBA was seeing a quick shift towards professionalism as the Western professionals were beginning to dominate baseball. The stars fled New York and the Northeast to play in outpost across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois. Chicago, Pittsburgh and Cleveland were emerging as the center of the baseball universe. It was becoming clearer the future of baseball would be written by the professional ranks.

Amongst the chaos of the 1868 winter convention, the Chicago Troika of Asher Isner, Normando Cubano and Martin MacLain decided it was time to bring calm to the storm. The three sponsors spent the summer of 1869 engulfed in a letter writing campaign to forge a truce. At the 1869 winter convention the amateurs and professionals agreed to split, more or less amicably. The Union of Amateur Base Ball Clubs (now American Amateur Baseball Convention) would eventually oversee everything from Mighty Mite Leagues to Team USA. The Union of Professional Base Ball Clubs (UPBBC) was the beginnings of the two league system we have today.

But no one knew that at the time. In the next 20 years no less than three strands of professional baseball would emerge. The shape that professional baseball holds today was not ordained from the start. From smallest whistle stop to the grandest of metropolis, professional baseball would cover the country.

The 1870 winter convention saw the creation of what was initially called “Elite” classification for the 1871 playing season. (Soon the sporting papers dropped the “Elite” and UPBBC became synonymous with the highest level of professionalism). For the first time there was an organized, scheduled competition among the best players and teams in the United States. A summer long confrontation (10 teams, 36 games spread from April to September) followed by an eight team 'knock out' tournament. Even the New York and Boston sporting press could not ignore the collection of talent in The UPBBC Elite division. The Spirit of the Times conceding midsummer that no Northeastern club could even argue for the National Championship, given the superior players out west.

For good or for ill, the two power blocks, the Chicago clubs and their 'satellites' and the Ohio-Pittsburgh clubs had little interest in reaching east into the AABBA's territory. These groups would back admission to smaller cities that were 'travel friendly' for their clubs. The Centennials would spend many seasons as a lone Eastern outpost. It would be the late 1880s before the UPBBC began to take a form that would be recognized by modern observers.

UPBBC Elite Division
Chicago IL Browns
Chicago IL Tigers
Chicago IL Unions
Cleveland OH Forest Citys
Columbus OH Senators
Marion OH Glassblowers
Peru IN Specials
Philadelphia PA Centennials
Pittsburgh PA Alleghenys
Wabash IN Rockeries

While the structure would change (most dramatically in the 1880s, 1920s and 1960s) the UPBBC label would stay with the Major Professional Level of baseball. Even through tumult and change the UPBBC ‘brand’ would lend legitimacy to what league emerged from the chaos.

Techinal Stuff

Using fictional players

Until the advent of ‘true’ affiliated minors in the mid-1940s, all clubs will have an AAA-Level Junior Club and an AA-Level Reserve Club. These clubs will play a ‘shadow schedule’ on the ML-Level Club. It isn’t ideal, but I like my prospects to have stats, not just ratings. Plus it works as a writer’s contrivance for folding one of the teams from a smaller city. Can’t afford the upkeep of the multiple clubs and such.

No amateur draft until sometime in the mid-20th century.

To reflect the 'informal' nature of the Union, suspension are turned off until 1880-1881, injuries on, set to Low.

Full Scouting and Coaching on. Hidden players off. Automatic evolution off. Spring training will be on for all ML, Indy minor and foreign leagues. Morale and personality systems are on. Aging and development set at 1.000.
All unaffiliated/Independent minors will have a reserve roster. All US U/I Minors will have no draft, with foreign player creation set at 0%. Full rosters will be on.

At the start, Free Agency at all levels is earned after 1 year service time. No arbitration, no draft pick compensation, no revenue sharing. No trades until 1884. 7 day DL, no rule 5 draft or minor league option years. Some of these will change over time as the league matures and changes.
Even though full financials are on, I'm going to leave myself the option to ignore Owner Deaths/Franchise sales or to force a death or sale. Strictly done because I feel the AI sales/deaths might not always fit with how the world is evolving.

Despite having an integrated world, I am going to do some editing of the generated Free Agents. I have a list of 50some countries which will eventually have their own league. Only players generated from these countries will be eligible. Instead of Cuba and the Dominican creating players (soccer powers in this world), Brazil, Chile and Costa Rica will produce players. No players from Japan or South Korea until after 1946. When amateur drafts start in the mid-20th century, each country with its own league will have its own national draft, draftees in the Major League draft from those countries will be deleted. (Ex. When the Canadian draft starts, no Canadians would appear in the ML draft). Initially foreign player creation for the ML will be set at 8%, and gradually shrink as more foreign leagues are created. All foreign leagues will have the foreign player creation set at 0%

The postseason will be an 8-team single elimination tournament. Gradually the series will grow and a “world series” type playoff will start in 1880-1881.

Career L/R splits, fielding and postseason stats for all levels will be kept at “very high detail”

All team/league creation/deletion will occur on day 1 of the preseason. I used to do this on January 1, but it played higgly-piggly with the league and team histories. I’m probably going to have to assign some Free Agents to newly created clubs with the short period before Spring Training.

I will not become involved with a specific team until sometime in the mid-20th century, probably a high level Midwestern Independent team.

I almost feel like I need to apologize for the level of posting I expect to do for the set of thread for this universe. I have found the more I share in the forums, the better I know the universe. In the last 2-3 seasons of the previous attempt I had a deeper sense of the world than I did in the prior decade.

In case you are curious, here is the complete list of counties that players can come from: Canada, Brazil, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, German, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, England, Scotland, Wales, Israel(post-1946), Japan (post-1946), South Korea (post-1946), Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Argentina, Bahamas, Chile, Uruguay, Serbia, Costa Rica, and Iceland. Not the usual gang of suspects, but it is one of those little things that give a world its own texture.

1871 Pre Season

Going into our inaugural season, here is a little more texture:

Wendell Bombeck (TR, 36, Cheshire CT), Max McQuisten (TR, 32, Hanford CA), Bob Jubie (TR, 30, Avondale AZ) and Barret Malis (TR, 27, Albuquerque NM) are generally regarded as the best pitchers in baseball. The sporting press laments the lack of young hurlers who seem destined for greatness.

IN Fleming Sayre (BR, 33, Martinez CA), IN Adriano De Cordova (BR, 29, Oakland CA), OF Floyd Cox (BL, 29, Los Angeles CA), IN Cheyney ‘Finn’ Huckleberry (BS, 29, Farmingville NY) are the names when the press discusses the best player in baseball. (Not to diss pitchers, but when I use the term ‘player’ 99 and 44/100th of the time, I mean position players)

OF Dormund Belknap (BL, 20, Stamford CT) and OF Hosteen Andorf (BR, 23, Hamilton NY) are considered by many the next great players in the game.

The fans seem to have a group of four favorites: The abovementioned Fleming Sayre and Floyd Cox, with IN Hamengku Pakpahan (BR, 35, Chicago IL) and OF Victor Porco (BS, 29, Colorado Springs CO).

1871 Notes: 7/10/71

Prior to 1871, a players generally did not play with a contract. As the Elite Division was organized, very basic seasonal contracts appeared to prevent revolving between the clubs. Everyone it was under ‘contract’ for that season only.

With word of the pending formation of the Atlantic League, and the press and fans emphasis becoming focused on Union games as the ‘important’ matches on the calendar, teams started changing the way they dealt with their talent.

Ikerne Palencia was drawing considerable praise as the starting catcher for the Marion Glassblowers. Known for his slugging ability and deft (for the era) defensive presence, the new record keeping was showing him to be a superior overall offensive player. The Glassblowers overall team defense far outstripped every other club in the Union, and Palencia was credited of being the on-field leader of that squad.

At 36, Palencia didn’t know how much time he had left as a player. And while his seasonal salary would drop from $440 to $375, the Glassblowers were willing guarantee that figure for 3 seasons. How could he not sign?

While not the first ‘extension’ in UPBBC history (research confirms Unions’ OF Luc Barranti reupped with that club for 1872 about 2 months earlier) it was the first to get a measure of attention from the Sporting Press.

8/2/1871-What's going on with Marion?

There have been 6 shut outs in the UPBBC this season: 5 of them have been spun by Glassblowers. This is the first one that was thrown on the road. What makes this amazing is Marion OH Ballpark should play as a hitters park.

Oh Wow, almost missed this!

A cycle in a clinching game--that is big time. First one in league history to boot!

Martich Goes Cycling
Tuesday, September 5th, 1871: "Some days everything falls in place and you have an almost perfect day."

Those were the comments from Chicago Unionscatcher Enrique Martich today as his 4-5 day included the cycle, a baseball rarity.

"He sure was a wrecking ball today," said one teammate after the Unions tamed the Senators 10-9 at Chicago IL Ballyard.

Enrique Martich doubled in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off Bob Fores in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run triple in the 6th and flied out in the 8th.

This season Martich has banged out 31 hits in 118 at-bats for a .263 average with 1 home run. He is getting on base at a .285 pace and his totals also include 21 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
