2034-35 off season

2034-35 OFF SEASON
It's going to be a busy winter. Expansion, realignment and much much more.

I have taken my IBL earnings and am moving to my 4th, and likely final, IBL franchise. I''ve become the majority owner of the new San Diego Sun Devils. It's time to start working top down, and handling the purse strings (I will allow the game to set budgets early on, and I will never increase the budget by more than 10%, more likely 5%. I will manage myself but rest assured I will try and make this as challenging as I can, while remaining fun. I am going to get hammered early on given my division, but I want to see how long it takes me to go from a new club to the world series.)

(The decision, in game and out, to leave San Antonio was a painful one. I am proud of how thorough a job we did rebuilding that franchise. I fully expect them to wipe the CL clean for years to come, they have it all, and an insane amount of depth).

First order of business will be the expansion draft. As you may know from reading this thread pitching is the end all be all, and that will remain true here. I have extended a ton of offers to minor league free agents and I will be looking at the big league guys as well.

I am going to take Buck Showalters Arizona Diamondback expansion draft philosophy. His strategy was NOT to draft great players (because they likely won't be there, or will be GROSSLY overpaid) but instead draft as many players as possible that you believe OTHER teams value, or will value, highly. That way you can trade for picks, and talent, at the deadline.

I've also scoured the free agent market and made a bunch of 1 year offers, with a few 2 year deals, to some decent free agents. Nothing serious on the money side but these offers are being made to some veteran players with good leadership skills and the ability to help nurture the young talent.

NOVEMBER STUFF
Sacramento grabs a pretty significant arm (and contract) in Cameron. He's signed through next season at 19.6M, but they gave up some decent prospects to grab him. While Houston appears to be losing some payroll. A thought confirmed a few days later when Fresno sends a haul of prospects to the Roughriders for aging superstar Benton Crowder. His 135 PA vesting option was hit so he has 1 year left, but everyone believes this was a major coup for Houston. A few days later Houston makes news again. This time grabbing another top prospect for former 1st rounder Esteban Roman. He's 21-17 lifetime but with a 5.07 ERA and most think he has to go to the pen to be a real arm, as he lacks the ability to work deep into games. But with these three deals everyone loves what the Roughriders have managed to do in their minor league system. They're now ranked 5th overall, up 6 spots in just 2 weeks since the season ended.

FRONT OFFICE CHANGES
Dayton = Fired manager Bernardo Palmeiro after 4 years and 4 losing seasons. Given his communicaton skills he was our first choice as new manager and we jumped on an offer. He accepted a 5 year 1.26m per year deal. He's an outstanding teacher with elite communication skills and clubhouse presence.

Hawaii = Fired manager Carlos Torres. From scouting director in Buffalo to Edmonton manager, an A ball job and then just over half a season here. Never managed a winning season. A few weeks later they hire Tim Brown on a 4 year 3m dollar deal. We were after Tim to manage our AAA club.

West Michigan = fired general manager Rade Milosevic. A short stint (3 years) as a minor league player but folks raved about his potential in the front office. The White caps canned him after just 1 year (66-96).

We did sign Ron Carr, a former gold glove winner and all star as our AAA San Francisco hitting coach. He combines with 42 year old Paul Allen, a future IBL manager, and 57 year old pitching coach Jose Liriano on our AAA staff. Former star Artie Johnson left San Antonio and we managed to convince him to get back to his roots and work with 'kids' on the mound. He will be our AA Waipahu pitching coach, along with 33 year old Antonio Arreola (hitting coach). We're continuing the hunt for a manager.

2 time manager of the year and 7 time world champion (4 as manager 3 as hitting coach in Chicago) has signed on to manage the AAA club. Glass apparently wants to move home, and live at home, residing in San Francisco it seemed a natural fit.

MANAGERS OF THE YEAR-Staten Islands Manuel Noriega took home the FL Manager of the year award in his 1st year on the job. He spent 2017 managing the Yanks, then went to El Paso as the hitting coach for the next 15 years before coming back to manage this year. From 2012 to 2016 he managed the Pittsburgh club.

SUBJECT: San Diego signs 7
The Sun Devils today announced the following signings.
Closer Felix Canales 2 years 2 million
Reliever Marcos Ximenes 1 year 950 K
Reliever Dustin Glenn 1 year 800 K
Reliever Mario Losoya 3 years 2.44 million
Catcher Miguel Hernandez 2 years 1.5 million
Infielder Henry Allen 2 years 1.56 million
Outfielder Randy Schneider 1 year 890 K

Nothing earth shattering here. Losoya is just 28 and a very good arm at a great price. Canales was signed to close and in hopes someone is in need of a veteran arm later. The two positions I wanted to make sure I had a suitable player are behind the plate and in center, and these two guys will be alright for a year. The major concern with almost every one of these deals is health, most of them came this cheap because they're huge health risks.

IBL SINGLE SEASON RECORD: HITS
269 Ramon Castro (GB) '26
240 Robinson Cano (PRO) '30
238 Domingo Casillas (AZ) '34
237 Jesus Andrales '15
236 Tony Greene (PIT) '28

SUBJECT: Mexico snags star prospect.
In a huge bidding war that ended today the Mexico Black Bandits announced the signing of 18 year old Mike Trout as one of their free agent contracts allowable under the basic agreement. The young star has been featured on just about every publication in the baseball world the past few months and his record deal was noted by owner Carlos Slim as 'necessary if we want to win as soon as possible”.
Word is that San Diego thought they had completed the deal yesterday, only to find out today he had signed with the Bandits. Owner Curt Schilling was reportedly furious at what he called 'underhanded tactics' reportedly employed by the Mexico franchise. A possible rivalry has been created before either team has stepped on the field.

SUBJECT: Bengals ink Strasburg
The Salt Lake City Bengals have announced the signing of 18 year old flamethrower Stephen Strasburg to a minor league free agent contract. Strasburg was the most coveted amatuer player in the country before being wooed by one of the IBL's newest clubs.

FREE AGENTS FILE
Seb Adams is of an age that makes him attractive obviously, but to a new club like ours he's a huge draw. We have more than enough money to make him an attractive offer and we do. We're bandying about 4-6 years in the 18-20 million per range. He's stuck over 19, I'm working a bit lower. We will keep this one alive.

I hate to ask, but have you thought about doing some sort of prologue to the Sun Devils, recapping how your career went with Chicago, Alaska, and San Antonio? It would be kind of cool to have some context as you delve into your newest dynasty.

Sure thing! Once I get through some stuff here I'll give an update on how we got here.

But first...

HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2035
Curt Whimster was the IBL's player of the decade in its first 10 years. An 11 time all star, 2 time MVP and 2 time world champion. Along with Luis Chavez is considered the top player in league history. Retires as the career leader in games, at bats, total bases, doubles walks and WAR. He goes in as a Tulsa Driller.

Jeffrey Hudson holds about every offensive career record for IBL 2nd Basemen. A 2 time MVP, 2 time gold glove winner, 11 time all star and 6 time world champion. He retires the career leader at 2B in Slugging, OBP, VORP, Games, AB's, Runs, hits, total bases, singles, home runs, RBI's, Walks, WAR and still holds single season records for AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, and Runs.

Angelo Esparza literally exploded onto the scene, winning the 2020 Rookie of the Year and Koufax award, a feat not repeated since. He won the Koufax in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024 as well as being elected to 5 all star teams. He led the league in wins 3 times, IP twice, K's 3 straight years ('20-'22) and won 4 ERA titles. Led the league in VORP 4 straight seasons, shutouts 6 times and led pitchers in WAR from 2020 through the 2025 season. He's on the lower end for wins but his run of dominance is hall worthy.

The career leader in ERA and Saves, Ernesto Cruz it the 1st closer to be elected to the IBL Hall of Fame. Led the league in saves just twice but has an IBL record 13 30+ save seasons. Was a beast in the post season as well, helping the Iron Pigs to 4 of their world titles.

How we got here.
The IBL sprang up 23 years ago (you can find the opening thread below, “The IBL's first 13 years”) as a means to give baseball fans baseball, while MLB was on strike.

That year I took over as the GM of the Chicago Iron Pigs and would spend the next 13 seasons there. We wouldn't get to the World Series until 2016, where we were beaten by Tulsa, but would win our 1st the next season over Pittsburgh. Missed the next year and then returned for the start of an epic 10 year run of LCS wins. The Iron Pigs would go to 10 straight World Series, winning in '19 and '23 before I would leave after a heartbreaking loss to Boston in 2024. They would then proceed to win a (then) record 4 straight world titles.

I left for Alaska and the 2025 season. An expansion club that was having troubles, and I was interested in leaving trouble behind. The Avalanche would slowly build their way to contention and make our 1st world series appearance in 2029, where they would then go to 6 straight World Series, including matching Chicago with 4 straight titles from '29-'32.

In the early part of the 2030 season I was approached by the Silver Stars, unbeknownst to anyone, about a possible larger role in their organization, but I had to walk away right then. Alaska, upon hearing the news, filed a grievance and things were settled 'out of court'. I was also let go.

I moved to San Antonio and began an ardous rebuilding project that just this year came to fruition. The San Antonio franchise, in my opinion, is as 'perfect' as I've ever made a club. Top to bottom in the big leagues and top to bottom in the minors, it's an organization that should contend well into the next decade and is stacked with young talent.

That brings us here. I was raised in Arizona, and grew up an ASU fan. The Sun Devils were my favorite college football team and since I never went to college myself, they've remained so. This past year I heard rumors of a group interested in starting this franchise, and I knew the IBL was expanding, and this group was also looking for a baseball person as a co-owner. After months of back room discussions the agreement came into focus, and I managed to procure a controlling interest in the club, and will serve as the owner, and GM, of the new San Diego Sun Devil franchise.

Here's a quick peek back at the winners and milestones that have made the IBL what it is today.

Rule 5 and Expansion drafts

Are completed. As one might expect there were no shockers and no real surprises other than the surplus of relievers out there.

I raided my old club(s), grabbing Orlando Arevalo in the Rule 5, along with Eric Keller and 1B Pablo Gonzalez. OF Mike Knight was rule 5'd as well.

The expansion draft was mainly about getting some arms, and every day players that can catch the ball. I'm not going to be able to field a .500 team this year but they need to catch the ball.

Did pickup 26 year old Jose Uribe, a gold glove caliber catcher who can hit a little bit, and 34 year old Randy Schneider. If you're a freak and have a photographic memory, I drafted Schneider in the 8th round of the 2021 draft, traded him to San Antonio in 2024 and then upon taking the San Antonio job I dealt him to Sacramento in 2030.

A few days after the drafts this little tidbit hit the wires...

On this club it's clearly the old Sesame Street "which one of these things is not like the other' skits, putting him on this roster. He's 25, and a star, and fan interest jumped to 97 at the signing. He'll be someone people will pay to see and we'll be able to build around as long as he can stay healthy.

The one place I am woefully inept right now is starting pitching. 33 year old Dave Vogel (78-83 4.51 in 159 starts) is the only healthy starter I have. I took a flyer on 26 year old Randy Hollis (4-15 7.73 in 2033) who missed all of last year with a rotator cuff injury and is due back in a few weeks. Those are the only 2 guys with a shot at starting games next year.

So I've extended offers to 3 veteran free agent pitchers, Jim Green (56-75 4.62) 30 years old, Bob Ross (102-122 5.18) 37 years old and John Dayman (50-40 4.87) a 31 year old. All are 2 year deals at short money. I have no other options but to patch holes and keep this afloat while I create an organization from the bottom up.

Signings and news pre-winter meetings

SIGNINGS
San Antonio puts big money into Bullock (wise move imo) and signs the only player to hit 50+ HR's in more than one season.
Boston spends big money on a closer and Pittsburgh picks up a premier offensive talent for the next 4 years.
Of all my signings, I felt the Vasario contract in Alaska turned out to be the best deal I ever made. He paid off huge almost all 5 years. Getting hurt last season on his way to a career year didn't help. Alaska is apparently going to put Hector Gomez in the outfield, next to Garcia and Velazquez.
A few days later Brooklyn adds another huge bat at huge money in Jenkins and Boston spends another 50+ million to bring in thumper Jim Edwards, a 3 time MVP and 6 time all star who's spent his entire career with New Orleans after being drafted and released by Michigan.
Tulsa then fills the void left by Jenkins departure when they sign 38 year old Ramiro Sanchez to a 2 year deal.
New York shells out huge money to get one of the game premier talents in Luis Soto, who was traded at the deadline and then helped propel LA to the Coastal League LCS.
Across the country LA announces the money they had been talking to Soto about is now in Catcher Rafael Concepcions pocket as he agrees to a whopping 5 year 85M dollar deal.

John Dayman agrees to a 2 year 3M dollar deal. Now I have 2 starting pitchers!
And a few hours later Jim Green agrees to a 2 year 2.8M dollar deal.
Fan interest is at 99 after these announcements.

LONGEST ACTIVE TENURE IN THE IBL
20 years 86 days Jesus Romano FA
19 years 92 days Luis Chavez FA
18 years 135 days Antonio Rojas FA
18 years 77 days Shimei Ikarashi FA
18 years 0 days Andre Blakeway FA
(I think this topic is why these 5 are still FA!)

2035 winter meetings day 1

2035 WINTER MEETINGS DAY 1
A bunch of moves and the 1st trade in San Diego franchise history. I manage to do the two things a team in our position HAS to do, get younger and more talented. Morris is a power arm, huge power arm, and Melendez is an elite offensive prospect. I gave up a bit but I got younger on the mound and got a very good young player.

I was reading about the playoffs yesterday afternoon and got sidetracked. I saw your thread in the mod forum last night and thought "expansion?". Then I came back this afternoon to see how the playoffs ended, knowing that it would be spring already, and wow! I just caught up. Great stuff!

You are now Connie Mack (owner, GM, manager). I expect to see at least 50 years at the helm.

2035 Winter Meetings Day 4

Come to find out San Antonio has put 26 year old Jonas Heeren on the trading block??? What? 5 years 1061 hits, a career .339/.375/.497 hitter. I have nowhere near the players to get him, or I would. Him and Adams on my left side would make this a fun club to watch.

2035 off season news

2035 OFF SEASON NEWS
Managed it sign a ton of minor league FA as well as some fringe IBL talent. A few 1-2 year deals, none for meaningful money.

IBL SINGLE SEASON RECORD: WHIP
0.833 Stan Hall (ALK) '29
0.842 Brandon Webb FA '28
0.900 Ernie Kelly RET
0.908 Nick Curran (EDM)
0.909 Esteban Figueroa FA '23

SIGNINGS
El Paso lands a player many think, when healthy, can flat out play. The 'when healthy' part is a going concern as he was a physical wreck last season and managed to play in just 78 games.

Sorry for the logo but they're not all done yet, but Ottawa makes huge news in signing Romano, and it was surprising to seem him take a 1 year deal. Might this be the final year of a HOF career?

Certainly caught off guard by the announcement out of San Antonio. The leagues most prolific offense lands a big bat in Ameixieira but I can't fathom why. With Derek Bailey ready to play every day, and having few defensive equals, and Alex Vela as the veteran backup no one saw this coming. The deal runs 3 years at 17.4 per year.

And Salt Lake City makes their first FA splash, signing 213 game winner Cody Miller to a 3 year 28.2M dollar deal.

And just when you thought one of the best staffs in IBL history couldn't get any better, the 51's go out and sign 2 time Koufax winner Brandon Webb to a 3 year deal.

Houston gets a team friendly 2 year deal on Baboor to close. And a few days later they continue to try and patch the hole Stan Cameron left when he went to Sacramento, getting 36 year old Raul Rubio for 3 years and 30m.

Mexico finally checks in, signing a pair of veteran infielders to 1 and 2 year deals.

Chicago bring closer Roberto Hidalgo “back home” after being away for 4 seasons. I signed him out of Puerto Rico in 2019. The contract is at or near the record AAV for a reliever. A couple days later Chicago shells out an enormous deal for 19 game winner Jay Coleman, giving him 93M over 6 years.
Carrillo's deal with the Wolverines runs 3 years at 28.5M with a 120 game vesting option at 12.9.

El Paso got Hernandez for 3 years at 26.1M and a 4th year player option at 10.4.

ACTIVE CAREER BATTING LEADERS: HITS
3374 Luis Chavez FA
2773 Andre Blakeway FA
2473 Juan Barrios (SI)
2397 Tony Greene FA
2212 Early Shaw FA

TRADES
The Hooks send 4 players to New York to grab a 32 year old closer with 76 career saves in Fong. He's got his work cut out but he's got the tools to be an elite closer.

SUBJECT: Sun Devils ink veteran SP
37 year old Bob Ross (102-122 5.18) has signed a 1 year 1.79M dollar FA contract with a 2nd year vesting option at 22 starts. Ross. Known around the league as a team leader, was thrilled to be able to join the new organization to “be apart of something from the ground floor. I have aspirations of coaching when my career is over and I'd love for it to happen here if it couldn't happen in my hometown of Houston”.

Rumor has it that he desperately wanted to sign with the Roughriders but they lowballed him. He's a workhorse, logging 6 200+ Inning seasons, his best year being 2029 with Sacramento when he went 16-11 3.52 (he was 46-23 between 2028 and 2030.

SUBJECT: San Diego signs 2 former players to help guide the new organization.

Recently inducted HoF pitcher Angelo Esparza and former all star Catcher Ernesto Garza have signed on to begin their coaching careers in the San Diego system. Esparza will be the pitching coach for the Short Season Moore club and Garza will manage class A Reboboth Beach.

Word is there are a bunch more offers out to former IBL stars, as owner Curt Schilling has always been adamant about paying top tier money for minor league coaches, figuring the investment in those young players warrants men committed and well paid to teaching them.

A day later former Koufax winner John Drake agrees to be the pitching coach for Garza in Rehoboth Beach and former Patriot slugger George Quinn has agreed to be the hitting coach for Rookie League Portsmouth.

Former all star Allen Hedden has agreed to a 4 year deal to become the hitting coach for the Short Season Moore club and Ron Stokes, an icon in San Antonio, ha signed a 5 year contract to manage at rookie league Portsmouth.
Flamethrower and the leagues oldest pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter Bryant Thomas has agreed to start his coaching career at Rookie league Portsmouth.

2035 final pre season news, signings...

Apparently the plan in San Antonio is to sit Heeren and Bullock vs LHP. And Heeren is still on the block, confusing.

2035 SPRING TRAINING

SIGNINGS
SUBJECT: Canucks ink Ontario native
17 year old Joey Votto has come to terms on an amateur free agent contract with the Ottawa Canucks of the IBL. The Canadian born slugger is said to be ecstatic at the opportunity to bring a world championship to Canada.

TRADES
I went to the 'well' so to speak and tapped San Antonio for RP Milovan Opacic, for utility glove man Juajn Rodriguez. He became doubly expendable when Seb signed his contract and they were looking for some IF depth I guess.

IN SAN DIEGO
I wanted to wait until camp ended to give you a look a the roster as it's currently comprised. With so many question marks and so many older players with physical issues, I had no idea who'd make it through camp, just praying that Seb Adams was one of them..

In official news, we lost our 1st ever spring training game, 2-1 to Buffalo and didn't manage to win our 1st until the 6th game, after a 17 inning loss the day before. We beat Michigan 11-3. And on that same day Alaska was 0-6 in camp.
