Chugging to First: Independent Minors Thread

So, you might be thinking, “Hey Mr. Fancypants, why do you think you need two threads for your fairly routine dynasty?”

Well I don't neeeed two threads. Much like Steve Martin once said, “I don't need you, I can do this alone . . . I often do,” but I started thinking about what I want long term from my dynasty. And upon reflection, I think I neeeed two threads.

I have made reference to my limitations as a storyteller. I'm a pretty good writer, as long as you want facts and keep it under 250 words. Anything beyond that, I'm not willing to bet on my ability. But if I do have a story, if I do have something to say, it isn't going to be about my 'Major Leagues'. It will be about the Independent Minors.

This thread will follow the Indy Minors from 1874 to their subjugation to the Majors during WWII and eventual rebirth in the early 60's. Or it will, if I can keep it going with minimal of irritants.

As of 1874 there is only 1 Independent 'Minor' League, the Atlantic League. They will be the only 'Minor' League until 1892. The AtL is, like the UPBBC, more of a Professional Association than full-fledged league. And will have grown to a Geographically unmanageable size before the 'Minors' start to organize into something like the world of early-20^th century baseball.

The AtL holds at 6 clubs, but the UPBBC addition of Bridgeport leads to discussion about adding more clubs to keep the "Western" League out of their territory.

The schedule is extended from 36 games to 44.

I don't think I would be in love with the world I've created if I acutally lived in it. In both the AtL and UPBBC players are moving all about willy-nilly. In the first two season of the AtL (Looking at the positional starters in team history) only 9 players were starters both years at the same position for the same team. Or put another way, over 1872-1873 only 1.5 starters out of 8 were the same for each team. The talent and economics are still working themselves out.

Princeton's Crucet Acclaimed Best AtL Hitter
Friday, May 1st, 1874: Montez Crucet is in the final year of his contract with Princeton and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 9 games in April the 26-year-old center fielder ripped Atlantic League pitchers for a .500 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 1 home run, 8 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

If Crucet keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

Gaebe Top AtL Pitcher in April
Friday, May 1st, 1874: Whether Aldo Gaebe stays in Princeton beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In April the 30-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 7-1 record and and an ERA of 2.03. In 75.1 innings he struck out 12, surrendered 88 hits, 2 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 9 starts last month.

AtL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, May 1st, 1874: Colin Orpen earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Atlantic League for last month's performance. The boyish East Brunswick first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Orpen hit .342 with no home runs, 7 RBIs and 5 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Plonski Gets AtL Batter of the Month Trophy
Monday, June 1st, 1874: Hot-hitting catcher Monty Plonski of the Hoboken Ducks really pounded opposing pitchers in May and collected Atlantic League Batter of the Month honors.

He hit .375 with no home runs and 9 RBIs and scored 11 runs.

AtL Announces May's Best Starter
Monday, June 1st, 1874: In May, Lindsey Potenza tore through the Atlantic League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 21 years old.

The young Hoboken starter posted a 6-2 mark and an ERA of 1.78 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 75.2 innings he collected 6 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .239 average.

Hoboken's Potenza AtL Rookie of Month
Monday, June 1st, 1874: Lindsey Potenza might not have fully digested the impact of winning May's Atlantic League Rookie of the Month award when he got the news earlier today, but the 21-year-old quickly learned that he was no longer your typical rookie.

Posting a mark of 6-2 won-lost record will do that. In 9 starts he tossed 75.2 innings with 6 strikeouts and a 1.78 ERA. Opposing teams hit .239 against him during the month.

Not bad for a first-year man.

Wednesday, July 1st, 1874: Jedd Adolfson of Manhattan had a tremendous June with a 5-2 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Atlantic League.

Adolfson restricted opposing hitters to 80 base hits and a .278 batting average. He rang up 5 strikeouts in 63.2 innings of work, surrendered 4 walks, and crafted a 1.70 ERA.

New Haven's State Winner, AtL Best Hitter in July
Saturday, August 1st, 1874: Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Elys State can still get it done in Atlantic League. In fact, the 33-year-old right fielder for New Haven was named the Atlantic League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In July he batted .471 with no home runs, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Atlantic League Announces Best Manager
Tuesday, September 22nd, 1874: Manager Glen Beers was speaking before a Cambridge fan luncheon, when word came down that he'd been awarded the Atlantic League Manager of the Year. Beers's face turned to surprise as the club's owner made the hasty announcement.

"Wow... how lucky can a guy be?... manage a great bunch of guys... have great fans... have a great season... and now this... life don't get any better than this."

Cambridge fans applauded, recognizing how fortunate they were to have Beers at the helm. Both fans and players in attendance toasted their skipper as they truly enjoyed the day.

1874 was an extra-special season for Beers as he piloted the Cambridge Crimson to a 22-22 record and a 4th place spot in the standings. A record good enough to win the 1874 Manager of the Year Award.

AtL Best Gloves of 1874 Chosen
Thursday, September 10th, 1874: The Glove Wizard Award winners don't get the recognition of the home run hitters, but they are very much appreciated by managers, their teammates and by the fans, who know the value of defensive excellence. Great defense makes a difference in baseball. This year's top glovemen in the Atlantic League are:

Saturday, May 1st, 1875: His solid numbers speak for themselves. That's why Yeardley Erks of the Manhattan Lions was named the Atlantic League's best batter in April.

The Manhattan shortstop starred with a .368 batting average, 1 home run and 7 RBIs.

East Brunswick Starter Named AtL's Best Pitcher
Saturday, May 1st, 1875: There's something about a young rookie winning the Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Artrell Ast, a 25-year-old starter for the East Brunswick Scarlet Knights.

In April, he topped off the month with a 5-2 mark and 0.63 ERA in 8 starts, tossed 71.1 innings, fanned 17 and held opposing teams to a .210 average.

Labbee Awarded May's AtL Top Bat Prize
Tuesday, June 1st, 1875: Arlan Labbee earned May's Batter of the Month honors in the Atlantic League by reeling off a .373 average, going 19 for 51 with 1 home run, 5 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

The soon-to-be free agent was hitting with great urgency in an effort to bolster his asking price in the Princeton clubhouse and around the rest of the league.

Vitek Is May's Best AtL Hurler
Tuesday, June 1st, 1875: Jameson Vitek hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In May the Hoboken starter earned a 7-4 mark in 11 starts. He threw 94.1 innings, struck out 7 and compiled a solid 2.00 ERA.

Denny Lemaster Hall Of Famer Join Date: Mar 2010 Posts: 4,837	1874-Other Awards AtL Atlantic League Announces Best Manager Tuesday, September 22nd, 1874: Manager Glen Beers was speaking before a Cambridge fan luncheon, when word came down that he'd been awarded the Atlantic League Manager of the Year. Beers's face turned to surprise as the club's owner made the hasty announcement. "Wow... how lucky can a guy be?... manage a great bunch of guys... have great fans... have a great season... and now this... life don't get any better than this." Cambridge fans applauded, recognizing how fortunate they were to have Beers at the helm. Both fans and players in attendance toasted their skipper as they truly enjoyed the day. 1874 was an extra-special season for Beers as he piloted the Cambridge Crimson to a 22-22 record and a 4th place spot in the standings. A record good enough to win the 1874 Manager of the Year Award. AtL Best Gloves of 1874 Chosen Thursday, September 10th, 1874: The Glove Wizard Award winners don't get the recognition of the home run hitters, but they are very much appreciated by managers, their teammates and by the fans, who know the value of defensive excellence. Much like Steve Martin once said, “I don't need you, I can do this alone . . . I often do,” but I started thinking about what I want long term from my dynasty. And upon reflection, I think I neeeed two threads. I have made reference to my limitations as a storyteller. I'm a pretty good writer, as long as you want facts and keep it under 250 words. Anything beyond that, I'm not willing to bet on my ability. But if I do have a story, if I do have something to say, it isn't going to be about my 'Major Leagues'. It will be about the Independent Minors. This thread will follow the Indy Minors from 1874 to their subjugation to the Majors during WWII and eventual rebirth in the early 60's. Or it will, if I can keep it going with minimal of irritants. As of 1874 there is only 1 Independent 'Minor' League, the Atlantic League. They will be the only 'Minor' League until 1892. The AtL is, like the UPBBC, more of a Professional Association than full-fledged league. And will have grown to a Geographically unmanageable size before the 'Minors' start to organize into something like the world of early-20^th century baseball. Denny Lemaster Hall Of Famer Join Date: Mar 2010 Posts: 4,837	1873-1874 Off season The AtL holds at 6 clubs, but the UPBBC addition of Bridgeport leads to discussion about adding more clubs to keep the "Western" League out of their territory. The schedule is extended from 36 games to 44.

Denny Lemaster Hall Of Famer Join Date: Mar 2010 Posts: 4,837	Turning over and over and over I don't think I would be in love with the world I've created if I acutally lived in it. In both the AtL and UPBBC players are moving all about willy-nilly. In the first two season of the AtL (Looking at the positional starters in team history) only 9 players were starters both years at the same position for the same team. Or put another way, over 1872-1873 only 1.5 starters out of 8 were the same for each team. The talent and economics are still working themselves out.
