2012- St. Louis Cardinals

After their 2011 World Championship, the St. Louis Cardinals experienced one of the most interesting off-seasons in baseball. Soon after the season ended, longtime manager Tony LaRussa and Pitching Coach Dave Duncan both retired. In December, they also lost Albert Pujols, arguably the best player in the game today, to the Los Angeles Angels through free agency. While this move shocked and upset some Cardinals fans, it did create much more financial flexibility for the organization, as Pujols will make $240 Million over the next 10 years. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak didn't completely ignore the free agent market however; He signed 34 year-old OF Carlos Beltran for the next two seasons, and also extended the contract of shortstop Rafael Furcal, who hit .255 for the Cardinals down the stretch last year.
But suddenly, with the 2012 nearing, Mozeliak resigned his position as GM. In a very brief press conference, Mozeliak stated that he was leaving, "for personal reasons", and did not offer much other explanation. A few days later, owner William Dewitt Jr. hired Jake Michaels, who had worked in the Cardinals front office last season, to fill the role of General Manager.

Despite the loss of the mighty Pujols, the Cardinals are still expected to contend for another championship this season. Dewitt has openly stated that he expects his team to win it all again (Talk about pressure for a rookie GM!). Even though veteran Chris Carpenter will miss the first 7 weeks of the season, Adam Wainwright is returning to the team after missing all of 2011, and J.C. Romero was added to strengthen the bullpen.

April 4th-8th

April 4th:
Cardinals 0 @ Marlins 10
WP: Josh Johnson (1-0, 0.00)
LP: Adam Wainwright (0-1, 11.25)
HR: MIA: Logan Morrison (1), Hanley Ramirez (1), Giancarlo Stanton (1)

It was difficult to watch us get killed in my first game as GM. The game was broken wide open early when Miami scored 5 in the third inning, causing new manager Mike Matheny to go to the bullpen earlier than usual. Instead of mounting a comeback, we let the gap widen even further, as our offense could only total five hits, all singles.

Around the League:
OF Vladimir Guerrero signs a 1 year deal with the Cubs worth $3.1 million.

April 5th:
Cardinals off day as we travel to Milwaukee to prepare for a three-game series.

April 6th:
Cardinals 2 @ Brewers 3
WP: Yovani Gallardo (1-0, 2.57)
LP: Jaime Garcia (0-1, 3.68)
SV: John Axford (1, 0.00)
HR: STL: Yadier Molina (1), Carlos Beltran (1) MIL: Alex Gonzalez (1), Ryan Braun (1)

Although we were able to score two runs via the long ball our offense still struggled, as we only had 6 hits in the game. In addition to the loss, we have more bad news; Matt Holliday was injured in the third inning while throwing the ball. Our team doctors have determined that it is a thumb contusion, which will keep him out for a week. Erik Komatsu and Shane Robinson will start in his place.

Around the League:
The Rockies had two injuries: SS Troy Tulowitzki is out two weeks with a strained shoulder, and RP Matt Reynolds is out for 13-14 months at least with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow.

April 7th:
Cardinals 4 @ Brewers 5 (13)
WP: Manny Parra (1-0, 3.38)
LP: Kyle McClellan (0-1, 4.91)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman (1)

It looked like we were going to win our first game when Daniel Descalso had an RBI double in the 13th, but Milwaukee scored two in the bottom half, as we fall to 0-3.

Around the League:
WAS P Steven Strasburg and COL P Jeremy Guthrie both pitch shutouts, both against very week teams however (Cubs and Astros, respectively).
Cincinnati's new SP Mat Latos will miss 3-4 months with a ruptured finger tendon.

April 8th:
Cardinals 5 @ Brewers 1
WP: Jake Westbrook (1-0, 1.08)
LP: Randy Wolf (0-1, 45.00)
SV: Jason Motte (1, 0.00)
HR: STL: Carlos Beltran (2)

We tore apart Randy Wolf for five runs in the first two innings, and Jake Westbrook was masterful, only allowing 1 run in 8.1 innings. Jason Motte came in to get the last two outs to close out our first win of the season.

Around the League:
AL POW: Twins CF Denard Span 5-9, 2 HR, 5 RBI
NL POW: Marlins SS Jose Reyes 8-12, 1 HR, 2 RBI
St. Louis is 27th in the latest power rankings.

NL Central:

1. Reds 3-0
2. Brewers 2-1
3. Pirates 1-2
4. Astros 1-2
5. Cubs 1-2
6. Cardinals 1-3

Just one week into the season, Cincinnati is baseball's last undefeated team.

Hey, can you tell me how you take in-game screens?

Tough luck against the Marlins and Brewers. Hopefully you can rebound quickly.

April 9-11 @ Cincinnati Reds (3-0)

April 9:
Cardinals 8 @ Reds 0
WP: Adam Wainwright (1-1, 4.09)
LP: Homer Bailey (0-1, 5.14)
HR: STL: Yadier Molina (2), Lance Berkman (2), Tyler Greene (1)

Although we only scored runs in two of the nine innings we played, we scored four each time to give us a blowout win. Adam Wainwright was much more effective, pitching seven shutout innings to earn his first win of the season after a rough outing against Miami. After this game we are tied for 2nd in the NL with 7 home runs. Unfortunately, we learned that Daniel Descalso will miss 3 weeks with a herniated disk. Tyler Greene will start at second, and we call up IF Pete Kozma from AA Springfield. Jon Jay will also miss about a week with an oblique strain, but he will not be placed on the DL.

Around the League:
Royals starter Luke Hochevar hurls a 5-hit shutout against the Oakland A's.

April 10th:
Cardinals 2 @ Reds 6
WP: Bronson Arroyo (1-0, 1.42)
LP: Kyle Lohse (0-1, 9.00)
HR: STL: Erik Komatsu (1)

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second, we quickly allowed Cincinnati to score 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning, some because of a costly error by Erik Komatsu. Komatsu did get the first two hits of his MLB career in the game however, but it was not enough for the Cardinals to make a comeback.

Around the League:
A's 2B Jemile Weeks has been suspended for two games after arguing with an umpire.

April 11th:
Cardinals 2 @ Reds 4
WP: Johnny Cueto (1-0, 5.68)
LP: Jaime Garcia (0-2, 5.56)
SV: Sean Marshall (2, 0.00)
HR: None

Once again we surrendered runs early in the game as Cincinnati put four runs across in the second inning. We made it a two-run game, but in the end we couldn't come back as we fall to 2-5. RP Mitchell Boggs was injured while pitching, and a diagnosis will come in a few days.

Around the League:
The Mets nearly had the first no-hitter in franchise history as Johan Santana allows just one hit to the Nationals.

April 12th:
Off day

Around the League:
Yankees CF Curtis Granderson is out 3 months with a concussion.
Philadelphia signs SP Roy Oswalt for one year at $5.77 Million,

April 13th-16th vs. Cubs (3-4)

April 13th:
Cubs 5 @ Cardinals 2
WP: Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 3.65)
LP: Lance Lynn (0-1, 4.91)
SV: Shawn Camp (1, 0.00)
HR: CHC: Geovany Soto (1)

Unfortunately we were not able to sent the fans home happy at our home opener against the Cubs. Lance Lynn only lasted four innings, and we couldn't get our offense going enough to get the win. After the game, we find out that Mitchell Boggs will be out for two weeks with a stiff back, so we call up RHP Chuckie Fick to fill the roster spot. Fick is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in AAA.

Around the League:
Brewers LF Ryan Braun is out three weeks with shoulder tendonitis.
The White Sox sign OF Johnny Damon and 1B Derrek Lee, both to 1-year contracts.

April 14th:
Cubs 3 @ Cardinals 6
WP: Jake Westbrook (2-0, 2.57)
LP: Ryan Dempster (0-2, 7.59)
SV: Jason Motte (2, 0.00)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman (3), Rafael Furcal (1)

Finally, instead of giving up a lot of runs early, we actually score in the beginning of the game. We led 4-2 after two innings, and Jake Westbrook was able to settle down to preserve our lead. After the game, we send OF/1B Allen Craig on a rehab assignment that will last only a few days. We also decide to place Jon Jay on the 15 Day DL, as his injury has worsened, and it will cause him to miss an additional week. We then call up the speedy OF Adron Chambers.

Around the League:
Phillies 1B Jim Thome will miss 3-4 weeks with a separated shoulder.
D-Backs SP Josh Collmenter shuts out out the Rockies 11-0.

April 15th:
Cubs 1 @ Cardinals 6
WP: Adam Wainwright (2-1, 2.25)
LP: Chris Volstad (0-1, 6.97)
HR: STL: Rafael Furcal (2)

Other than one run allowed in the ninth inning, Adam Wainwright's first complete game of the season was nearly perfect. Wainwright only allowed four hits and one walk in the 6-1 victory.

Around the League:
Boston's 3B Kevin Youkilis and Tampa Bay's pithcer Wade Davis both received 5-game suspensions for starting a bench-clearing brawl.
SD OF Carlos Quentin will miss an additional 2-3 weeks.
ARI 2B Ryan Roberts is out two more weeks than expected as he recovers from a hip injury.
Detroit signs catcher Ramon Castro for one year at $760,000.
The Mets sign veteran RP Arthur Rhodes to a one year deal at $980,000.
AL POW: TOR 1B Adam Lind 12-24, 2 HR, 8 RBI
NL POW: CHC SS Starlin Castro 15-30, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R
The Cardinals are ranked 21st in the latest power rankings.

NL Central:
1. Brewers 5-5
2. Reds 5-5
3. Pirates 4-5
4. Astros 4-5
5. Cardinals 4-6
6. Cubs 4-6

April 16th:
Cardinals off day

April 17th-19th vs. Reds (5-5)

April 17th:
Reds 2 @ Cardinals 3
WP: Jaime Garcia (1-2, 3.72)
LP: Bronson Arroyo (1-1, 2.84)
SV: Jason Motte (3, 1.93)
HR: CIN: Devin Mesoraco (2), Drew Stubbs (1)

Once again we get a strong effort from our starting pitcher, as Garcia allowed only one run in eight innings of work. Cincinnati threatened with a run in the top of the ninth, but Motte was able to close out the game and extend our winning streak to three.

Around the League:
Josh Johnson and Yovani Gallardo both pitch shutouts.
Cincinnati's RP Nick Masset will miss an extra two weeks with a tender shoulder.
Chicago (AL) signs 2B Toby Gardenhire and OF Michael Restovich to one year deals.

April 18th:
Reds 2 @ Cardinals 5
WP: Lance Lynn (1-1, 4.08)
LP: Mike Leake (1-2, 5.24)
SV: Jason Motte (4, 1.59)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman (4)

After scoring two in the bottom of the first, Lance Lynn allowed the Reds to tie the game in the second. But after that, Lynn was very solid, pitching a total of 6.2 innings, striking out 10.
Despite only hitting .167 in AAA, we called up Allen Craig and sent Adron Chambers back to AAA. Until Jay returns from the DL, Craig will start in right, and Beltran will start in center.

April 19th:
Reds 8 @ Cardinals 2 (14)
WP: Jose Arredondo (1-0, 6.75)
LP: Marc Rzepczynski (0-1, 7.11)
HR: None

The game was much closer than the score, as no runs were scored between the 7th and 13th innings. Unfortunately, the Reds exploded for six runs in the 14th, preventing us from getting the sweep.

Around the League:
RP Hong-Chih Kuo signs a 1 year deal worth $660,000 with the Brewers.

April 20th-22nd @ Pirates (5-7)

April 20th:
Cardinals 1 @ Pirates 9
WP: James McDonald (1-0, 3.13)
LP: Jake Westbrook (2-1, 5.12)
HR: STL: Allen Craig (1) PIT: Rod Barajas 2 (4), Clint Barmes (3), Nate McClouth (2)

The game was 3-0 heading into the sixth until the Pirates scored 6 more in the next two innings. A 9th inning homer by Allen Craig prevented James McDonald from shutting us out.
After the game, 2B/OF Skip Schumaker was removed from the DL and was sent to AAA Memphis for a rehab assignment.

Around the League:
Nationals SP Edwin Jackson holds the Marlins to just 3 hits and a walk in a 4-0 victory.
3B Casey Blake signs a 1-year deal worth $744,000 with Toronto.

April 21st:
Cardinals 5 @ Pirates 3
WP: Adam Wainwright (3-1, 2.05)
LP: Charlie Morton (1-1, 6.75)
SV: Jason Motte (5, 2.70)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman (5), Matt Holliday (1)

Adam Wainwright had another solid start, and although we allowed three runs in the final three innings, we were able to hold on for the win. Lance Berkman had a great game, going 3-3 with a HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, and 2 BB.

Around the League:
Angels SS Erick Aybar goes 5-5 against the Orioles, leading them to an 8-2 victory.
SP Sergio Mitre signs a one year deal with the Reds, worth $648,000.

April 22nd:
Cardinals 12 @ Pirates 3
WP: Jaime Garcia (2-2, 2.96)
LP: Jeff Karstens (0-2, 4.56)
HR: STL: David Freese (1), Rafael Furcal 2 (4) PIT: Rod Barajas (5)

Blowout wins us the series and gets us back to .500 after rough start to open up the season. Rafael Furcal led the way with 6 RBIs out of the leadoff spot.

Around the League:
Atlanta RF Jason Heyward goes 5-5.
Colorado pitcher Jamie Moyer will miss 4-5 months with a shoulder injury. At age 49, this injury may force the veteran into retirement.
Mets 2B Daniel Murphy is out for the next 5 weeks with a strained anterior cruciate ligament.
AL POW: BAL 3B Mark Reynolds 8-26, 6 HR, 14 RBI
NL POW: COL LF Carlos Gonzalez 14-25, 2 HR, 5 RBI
St. Louis is ranked 13th in the power rankings.

NL Central:
1. Brewers 9-7
2. Cardinals 8-8
3. Astros 8-8
4. Reds 8-8
5. Cubs 7-9
6. Pirates 6-9

April 23rd-25th @ Cubs (7-9)

April 23rd:
Cardinals 1 @ Cubs 5
WP: Paul Maholm (2-1, 1.74)
LP: Lance Lynn (1-2, 3.97)
HR: None

Although we had a decent amount of hits (10), we were not able to capitalize with runners in scoring position, as Paul Maholm went the distance in the 5-1 Cubs win.
After the game, we sent down a struggling Erik Komatsu (.186 AVG in 14 games) to bring Jon Jay back up to the majors from the DL.

April 24th:
Cardinals 0 @ Cubs 2
WP: Jeff Samardzija (3-1, 2.30)
LP: Kyle Lohse (0-2, 3.24)
SV: Kerry Wood (2, 1.13)

It was a rather uneventful game for fans, as there was only a total of 11 hits in the game, all singles. Two errors by the Cardinals were costly, as they lose another close game.

April 25th:
Cardinals 12 @ Cubs 3
WP: Jake Westbrook (3-1, 4.10)
LP: Ryan Dempster (1-3, 5.18)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman (6), Tyler Greene (2), Rafael Furcal (5), David Freese (2) CHC: Geovany Soto (2)

It would have been nice if we could have scored some of these 12 runs earlier in the series, but at least we prevent getting swept. The game was fairly close going into the ninth but we exploded for seven runs to put the game out of reach.

Around the League:
Dodgers CF Matt Kemp tore his meniscus and will miss four weeks.
Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval broke his hand and will miss 2 months.

April 26th:
Cardinals off day

Around the League:
The Giants suffer another major injury as Matt Cain will miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury.

April 27th-29th vs. Brewers (10-9)

April 27th:
Brewers 5 @ Cardinals 6
WP: Adam Wainwright (4-1, 2.16)
LP: Chris Narveson (2-2, 5.60)
SV: Jason Motte (6, 2.08)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman (7), Carlos Beltran (3)

We scored three runs in the first inning and didn't really look back to take the win. An error by Tyler Greene caused two unearned runs, but Adam Wainwright was able to overcome the mistake and win his fourth consecutive start.
After the game, Mitchell Boggs came off the DL, and Chuckie Fick was sent to AAA. Fick only pitched two innings for St. Louis, allowing two runs in the process.

Around the League:
White Sox 1B Paul Konerko hit home run #400 in a 5-2 win against Boston.
Cubs CF Marlon Byrd was set back in his recovery from shoulder tendinitis, and he will miss an additional week.
Marlins RP Edward Mujica will miss five months with a fractured elbow.

April 28th:
Brewers 5 @ Cardinals 8
WP: Fernando Salas (1-0, 2.35)
LP: Jose Veras (1-1, 5.73)
SV: Jason Motte (7, 1.86)
HR: STL: Matt Holliday (2), Allen Craig (2)

After getting out to an early 3-0 lead, we allowed Milwaukee to score four runs in the next two innings. But in the eighth, Allen teed off on a Jose Veras pitch for a grand slam, giving the Cardinals the lead and the win. After this win, we have a winning record for the first time all season.
After the game, Daniel Descalso was placed on a rehab assignment.

Around the League:
Atlanta's CF Michael Bourn will miss the next six weeks with a torn thumb ligament. But on a positive note for the Braves, Tommy Hunter threw a four-hit shutout.

April 29th:
Brewers 3 @ Cardinals 0
WP: Shawn Marcum (1-3, 4.55)
LP: Lance Lynn (1-3, 3.86)
SV: John Axford (6, 2.31)

The combination of only getting six hits, and committing three errors made it very tough for us to pick of the win in the series finale.

Around the League:
Dodgers pitcher Aaron Harand shuts out Washington in a 4-0 win.
AL POW: NYY 3B Alex Rodriguez 9-23, 4 HR, 13 RBI
NL POW: SFG 2B Freddy Sanchez 13-28, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R
The Cardinals have moved down to 18th in the power rankings.

April 30th:
Cardinals off day, RP Scott Linebrink goes on a rehab assignment.

Around the League:
A forearm strain will keep Mets starter R.A. Dickey out for three weeks.
AL Hitter of the Month: BAL 3B Mark Reynolds .299 AVG, 12 HR, 34 RBI, 20 R
NL Hitter of the Month: STL 1B Lance Berkman .316 AVG, 7 HR, 15 RBI, 17 R
AL Pitcher of the Month: TEX SP Colby Lewis 4-0, 25 K, 2.33 ERA, 27 IP
NL Pitcher of the Month: PHI SP Roy Halladay 5-1, 1.28 ERA, 42.1 IP, 39 K
AL Rookie of the Month: SEA DH Jesus Montero .265 AVG, 22 H, 1 HR, 13 RBI
NL Rookie of the Month: CIN C Devin Mesoraco .327 AVG, 6 2B, 4 HR, 10 R, 11 RBI

May 1st-3rd vs. Pirates (8-14)

May 1st:
Pirates 2 @ Cardinals 1
WP: James McDonald (2-0, 2.31)
LP: Jake Westbrook (3-2, 3.78)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (5, 0.96)
HR: PIT: Andrew McCutchen (3)

Both teams only recorded five hits each, but Pittsburgh's two runs in the first two innings proved to be the difference as we couldn't get enough offense going to win the game.

Around the League:
Dodgers LF Juan Rivera raps out five hits in an 11-10 victory over the Rockies.
Phillies SP Cliff Lee is out for the rest of the season and part of next season as he will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL.

May 2nd:
Pirates 2 @ Cardinals 5
WP: Kyle Lohse (1-2, 2.92)
LP: Charlie Morton (1-2, 5.25)
SV: Jason Motte (8, 1.64)
HR: STL: David Freese (3), Carlos Beltran (4)

Some key errors by Pittsburgh and a big fourth inning by us proves to be the difference as we even the series at one game apiece.

Around the League:
Philadelphia 3B Placido Polanco records hit number 2,000 in a losing effort against their division rival, Atlanta.
Miami sends IF/OF Omar Infante and minor league catcher Austin Barnes to Arizona for SP Joe Saunders.

May 3rd:
Pirates 1 @ Cardinals 2 (11)
WP: Marc Rzepczynski (1-1, 6.52)
LP: Evan Meek (0-1, 4.91)
HR: PIT: Rod Barajas (6), Rafael Furcal (6)

It looked like Rafael Furcal's third inning home run would be the only run scored in the game, until the Pirates tied the game in the eighth, preventing Adam Wainwright from picking up another win. But the Cardinals were able to hold on until a walk-off double by David Freese in the 11th to win another series.

Around the League:
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria passes away, his son will take over as owner.

May 4th-6th @ Astros (13-12)

May 4th:
Cardinals 3 @ Astros 4
WP: Wesley Wright (1-0, 1.64)
LP: Jason Motte (0-1, 2.31)
HR: STL: Carlos Beltran (5) HOU: J.D. Martinez (4)

After getting down 3-0 early in the game, we were able to tie the score up by the fifth on a two-run home run by Beltran. Unfortunately, Houston won the game in the ninth as Jason Motte loses his first game of the year.

Around the League:
Detroit trades C Alex Avila to the Royals for CF Jason Bourgeois and a minor league third baseman named Cheslor Cuthbert.
The Mets have traded 3B Joshua Satin to the White Sox for IF/OF Brent Lillibridge and minor league catcher Josh Phegley.
1B Jeff Larish signs with Pittsburgh for one year at $552,000.

May 5th:
Cardinals 5 @ Astros 4
WP: Lance Lynn (2-3, 4.11)
LP: Bud Norris (2-4, 2.56)
SV: Jason Motte (9, 2.13)
HR: STL: David Freese (4) HOU: Carlos Lee (6)

It looked like we would lose once again against the Astros, until a huge four-run inning in the seventh, allowing us to get back above .500.

Around the League:

Cardinals 8 @ Astros 3
WP: Jake Westbrook (4-2, 3.89)
LP: Lucas Harrell (3-1, 4.89)

We rapped out 13 hits in a pretty easy win, as after Jake Westbrook threw six solid innings, our bullpen only allowed one hit the rest of the way.

My 7th-9th @ Diamondbacks (12-17)

2B/OF Skip Schumaker has finished his rehab assignment and has been called up to the majors. Pete Kozma has been sent to AAA.

May 7th:
Cardinals 8 @ D'Backs 16
WP: Takashi Saito (1-0, 5.63)
LP: Mitchell Boggs (0-1, 9.00)
HR: STL: David Freese (5), Allen Craig (3) ARI: Henry Blanco 2 (3), Stephen Drew 2 (2), Aaron Hill (5)

The game was close until the end, as we had a disastrous eighth inning. Arizona took the lead and more by scoring ten runs (five unearned), as our late lead went to waste.

Around the League:
Giants pitcher Clay Hensley is out for the season with Tommy John surgery.
Washington's star 3B Ryan Zimmerman is out for the year with a ruptured achilles tendon.

May 8th:
Cardinals 8 @ D'Backs 6
WP: Eduardo Sanchez (1-0, 1.15)
LP: David Hernandez (0-1, 7.30)
SV: Jason Motte (10, 1.88)
HR: ARI: Ryan Roberts (1)

It was another huge offensive outburst in the desert in the second game of the series, but this time we came out on top. After scoring six in the second inning, Arizona would tie the game by the fourth, but a great effort from the bullpen helped us win the game after taking the lead for good in the sixth.

May 9th:
Cardinals 6 @ D'Backs 3
WP: Jaime Garcia (3-2, 3.64)
LP: Ian Kennedy (1-4, 5.40)
SV: Mitchell Boggs (1, 7.71)
HR: STL: Lance Berkman 2 (10), Carlos Beltran (6)

After scoring three in the first we never looked back, as we win the series 2-1. This was a great offensive series for us, as we scored a total of 20 runs in three games.

Around the League:
Miami SS Jose Reyes extends his hitting streak to 20 games.
