UBL opens its doors--VERY different league!
The Unified Baseball Leagues (UBL) announces that its doors will be opening soon!
What is the UBL? The UBL is a 1927 historical league with MLB players. What’s so big about that? The UBL contains about 100 Negro League players from 1927 and around 50 Pacific Coast League players from the same year. The ‘bottom rung’ MLB players were deleted to make room for these new players. The league has 16 teams—6 from MLB, 7 Negro teams, and 3 PCL teams in two leagues of 8 teams. Each year’s ammy draft will consist of MLB, NL, and PCL players who debuted in that season. Exhausting research was done to create this league for over 3 months. I went through every NL roster and PCL roster from 1927, player by player. I have personally created each and every new player in this league and imported the MLB players using Ankit’s db. This is the first league of its kind to have the FULL set of baseball players of this era on one diamond. I used The Statistical History of the PCL: 1903-1957, The Encyclopedia of the Negro Leagues, and The Complete History of the Negro Leagues to do my research. Each team will keep 2 ‘franchise players’ from its 1927 roster and the rest will be filled using an initial draft. Invitations have been sent out for 13 of the franchises. I have purposely left 3 teams vacant to offer to the OOTP public on an application basis. The league url will be http://www.theubl.net and a partial site is up at that address now with links to the forum, Owners page, and the index page. Site work continues and will be done soon. The league will have financials turned on, but scouts/coaches turned off. For those of you who don’t get a team or arent interested, I will make this initial league file available to the public very soon. If you’d like to partake in watching Satchel Paige, Willie Wells, Bill Foster, or Cool Papa Bell take on the MLB players of their time, send me your vital information with your top 5 choices of team to volunteer1967@hotmail.com UBL Teams Foster League Baltimore Black Sox Boston Red Sox Chicago American Giants Detroit Tigers Hilldale Daisies New York Yankees San Francisco Seals St. Louis Stars--Taken Landis League Brooklyn Dodgers Chicago Cubs Cincinnati Redlegs Hollywood Stars Homestead Grays Kansas City Monarchs-Taken Los Angeles Angels Pittsburgh Crawfords Again, this file is thorough, IMO, and will be available to the public in the next couple of days. |

This was a tough opportunity to pass up for me. I have been on the ground floor in other startup leagues from Mr. Cooley (Heritage Baseball, ABA) and, as one of the lucky 13 invites, had a chance to join this one. Fortunately/unfortunately it's a double edged sword...I am enjoying the previous Cooley leagues so much that I don't have the time to devote to another one!
I will defintely add this league to my short list of leagues I follow despite not having a team involved in it! To those that do get in, have a blast with the UBL! |

I've been waiting to join a league for a couple months now and it looks like this would definitely be a great league to be a part of. I've submitted my application. Thanks Cooley for all the hard work!

Sounds like a great concept Mark!
But shame on you for saying that it wasn't what I thought it might be.

For those of you who have sent applications.............
First, thanks for your interest. Second, I will not act on them until at least Wednesday night, so don't think that you didnt get a team just b/c you havent heard from me. I'm still waiting on 3 of the first 13 invites to respond so I'll know exactly how many vacant teams I can fill with the applcations. Right now, it looks like 7 will be filled from apps. |

CHANGE OF PLANS:
Thanks so much to all of you who have applied. I just went through the apps and have a total of 23. Though all 23 are good owners, 16 of those stand out to me and I will most likely only have half that many teams to dole out. For that reason, no other applications will be taken. Actually, this league could be started TWICE with all the solid owners that have applied to me. I'll be notifying all the successful owners once I jot down notes on each and every applicant. No slap in the face is intended to anyone who doesnt get a team and I invite all those who applied to join our message board and get involved as we watch the MLB players of the past compete with their negro and PCL counterparts. This is groundbreaking stuff, and I wish all that would like to, to become involved in our league, as Asst. GM's, reporters, statiticians, or just as onlookers. More news soon! Thanks again for the fantastic response! |

D'oh! This is the best league idea in a while. Yet, like Scott, I'm in too much, including two Cooley-leagues. But I will have to keep an eye on this league.

.........sorry, yes they have........
We can use vultures on the league forums contributing to the league. We will fill future vacancies with the vultures on our forums first, so if you'd still like to be affiliated with this league, head on over and register.........you could get the first vacancy. Again, no knock to anyone who submitted, but didnt get a team. I could have filled the league twice with the # of good applicants that submitted. |

I'm a 'vulture'...so if you choose that road, you'll be in good company
...I'm just looking forward to watching how things unfold.

I just downloaded the league files.... EXCELLENT JOB
I'll definitely be circling the carcasses, so any lazy managers had better watch out. I think I'll be making my own solo league to check this out.

Even great leagues tend to have substantial owner turnover in the first couple of seasons. Mark's ABA works the same way in terms of filling vacancies... we had a bunch of vultures at the beginning, those who hung around and participated all got teams within a season or so. If you really want to get in to this one, persevere as a vulture and you'll very likely have team before too long.
