I decided to take the plunge

I downloaded GIMP for mac (a free program) which is much like paintshop. I am attempting to make simple "clean" logos without any background color, or shine etc... I am simply looking to do what DCHelper's logos are for my first attempt. I am a total novice at this, and therefore am wondering if anybody here can help me along in this process. I will be very upfront in telling you I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm not sure why I am trying this, other than the fact that I consider it a challenge, and what to see if I can come up with anything decent. Any and all help is much appreciated!!

If you are a GIMP rookie, Google can help a lot. There are forums and many tutorials available. I use Paint Shop Pro but I often find Photoshop tutorials that are helpful. Search on 'GIMP tutorial', 'GIMP help' or something more specific such as 'gimp text on a curve' (you will need this for uniforms). This site also has a lot of helpful members. There doesn't seem to be a "secret society of modders" that are unwilling to share information like there is for other games. I learned PSP by experimenting with the tools. Just dive in and start doodling.

Feel free to post here or PM me if you have any questions about GIMP. I don't claim to know it all, but I've been using it for a while now.

DC-Do you prefer using fonts or jersey scripts/wordmarks on jerseys? I like being able to use different fonts but they don't look great on the jerseys that I've been working on. Which template do you use?

I prefer using fonts if I'm making a custom jersey (not MLB based) just because I have more choices and freedom. If I can find a good wordmark then I'll use it.

Also, I don't use GIMP for my jersey scripts. I prefer to use WordArt in Excel. I can get much better results with tons of options to play with.

Best thing I ever learned was to change the background color to transparent when creating new images.

Attachment 271213I think I have it figured out somewhat...I still can't do a lot of things, but if it's the right type of logo, I guess I'm alright. here is my first attempt.

Edit: uh oh...it won't show up from my desktop...here is a screen pic of it:
