Hits, Hits, and more Hits

First of all, I want to thank NYY #23 for inspiration for this dynasty. You can find his Home Run Dynasties here (original) and here (new). I really enjoyed reading those so I suggest you check them out.

However, I am using hits to do this dynasty. Pete Rose is the all-time Hits leader in real life with 4,256 hits. Who will be the all-time hits leader now??

The Dynasty will start as soon as possible in 1871 and I will play each year without a job but as commisioner. Historical transactions are off, but players will debut when they do.

I must say you had the exact same idea as I did, including the inspiration.

Ah, well. I'll be looking forward to this.

I was considering both this and stolen bases. You could do one for those of RBIs, or pitcher wins, or strikeouts.

Pitcher wins would be the best out of those stats, but considering how many more games pitchers played in the dead-ball era, I think any chasing for career wins would die out after the 30s or so.

Of course, I could always just do a different simulation with hits or home runs (my idea involved the random debut function, a power I love to abuse).

1871: Start Leads All

Major League Baseball's Inaugural season began as a dream season for Joe Start. Start had 58 hits and becomes the all-time leader (for now). In real life, start totaled 1,418, a respectable total.

The Cincinnati Reds won their first championship, defeating the Cleveland Forest Citys 4 games to 1.

1872: Barnes Leads the Way

In 1872, the schedule expanded 20 more games. After the end of the season, the Cleveland Forest Citys became the Cleveland Blues.

The 1872 season saw the Baltimore Canaries win their first ever championship, defeating the defending champion Cincinnati Reds four games to two.

Ross Barnes, who had 47 hits in 1871, took advantage of the schedule and hit .427 with 97 hits, leading the league in both.

Our newest debut members were Jim O'Rourke and Paul Hines. Both were first round picks in the draft, Hines by Baltimore, and O'Rourke by Chicago.

1873: White Flirts With 100

1873 was another magical year for Deacon White. White hit .402 and led the league in hits, placing him in first on the all-time hits list. He narrowly missed 100 hits but settled for 98, 8 more than any other player.

The Cleveland Blues won their first championship in franchise history, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1.

Bobby Mathews won the first ever Pitching Triple Crown, going 27-10 with a 1.70 ERA and 33 strikeouts.

1874: Barnes on top again

In 1874, the Cleveland Blues defeated the Brooklyn Atlantics 4 games to 1 to win their second championship ever, and become the first ever back-to-back championships. After the season, the Baltimore Canaries changed their name to the Orioles.

A huge trade went down in July. All-time hits leader Deacon White was traded to Baltimore for #5 all-time in base knocks, Lip Pike.

Ross Barnes led the league again with a .398 batting average and set a new single-season record with 105 hits. He won the MVP award while he was at it.

Harry Wright retired due to old age at the end of the season. He finished with 205 career hits, tied for 30th on the all-time list. In real life, Wright had 222 career hits.

1875: White Reclaims Title

After a short one-year hiatus, Deacon White returned on top of the hits leaderboard, smacking 97 hits and a .354 batting average. White stays on top of the career hits list for the 3rd straight year.

The newly renamed Baltimore Orioles defeated the Brooklyn Atlantics four games to one for their second World Series win.

Jimmy Hallinan retired due to an injury mid-season. Hallinan finished with 295 career hits, 24th all-time. In real life he totaled 218 hits over 8 full seasons.

1876: White Makes it 3

Deacon White claimed his third MVP Award and his 3rd hits title in 1876 after smacking 97 hits and nearly hitting 100 for the first time in his career. He retains his crown as the all-time hits leader.

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Brooklyn Atlantics, 4 games to 2, to win their third championship. With the win, the NL has not seen a title since 1871, the inaugural season.

1877: White Reaches 100

Deacon White looks like a sure lock for his fourth MVP Award after leading the league in hits four the fourth time. He also led in average, OBP, Slugging, OPS, Total Bases, and wOBA. He finally hit 100 hits for the first time in his career.

The Brooklyn Atlantics won their fourth straight AL pennant, and they looked like champions after going up 3-1 on the Cleveland Blues. But the Blues fought back, winning the next three to finish the first 7-game World Series in history. The Blues claimed their third championship in history.

Our first 2,000 hit member in quite a while will debut next year, John Montgomery Ward (I changed his position to a SS).

Ross Barnes always seems to do well whatever league I play. I'm curious what settings are you using for recalc?

1878: Rookie shines while White struggles

Deacon white had never experienced struggle in his career, so it's understandable that he was upset after a sub-par year in 1878. His 96 hits and all three of his triple slash stats were career lows, and he lost his spotlight to a new rising star.

Abner Dalrymple, the #1 overall pick in the 1877 amateur draft, set not only the single-season rookie hits record, but he tied the highest single-season total of any player as he collected 105 hits. Throughout the year, he won all 6 NL Rookie of the Month awards, 2 NL Player of the Week awards, and three NL Player of the Month awards, along with an All-Star selection. In real life, he collected 1,202 career hits.

John Montgomery Ward, the next member of the 2,000 hit club to debut, was a fifth-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles, but did not sign.

The Brooklyn Atlantics won their fifth straight NL title, but lost to the Baltimore Orioles, 4 games to 2. The O's won their fourth World Series.

1878 Draft

The 1878 draft has come and gone and it saw three players be drafted that had 2,000 or more hits in real life.

As compensation for failing to sign a first round-pick in 1877, the Chicago White Sox had picks #3 and #4. They selected Dan Brouthers with the first and John Montgomery Ward with the second (I edited Ward to be a full-time SS. IRL he threw a perfect game as a pitcher). However, Brouthers failed to sign, making him eligible for the 1879 draft, when he will be 21 years old.

The St. Louis Brown Stockings got a steal in the second round, taking second baseman Jack Glasscock. Glasscock, who collected 2,040 hits in real life, could be one of the most dominant hitters in the game.

1879: As Schedule Expands, Records are Broken

The Baltimore Orioles finished the 1879 season at 67-17 and won their fifth World Series, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 4-2, but not because of their 4-time MVP catcher Deacon White. White collected 99 hits, but that was mostly due to the expanded schedule. He posted career lows in average (.260), OBP (.274), and SLG (.341). This was after a year where we were starting to consider regression despite the fact he kept all three triple-slash stats above .300. Now, going into his age-32 season, is he past his prime? Is he done?

Ross Barnes, another guy with an illustrious career to date, also had a tough season. He hit .240 last season but missed time with injuries, but after a permanent move to shortstop in 1879, his performance was inexplicable. He hit .223/.231/.279 with a -4.9 VORP. Largely because of him, the Brooklyn Atlantics failed to win their 6th straight NL Pennant.

And what about Abner Dalrymple, the rookie who took home an MVP and overshadowed White and Barnes in a dominating 1878 season? He hit .254/.276/.323 with a 0.1 VORP. However, he's still only 22, so he can improve.

Cap Anson continued his surefire Hall-of-Fame career. He demolished the single season hits record and won his 2nd batting title, hitting .358.

The two hyped rookies entering the year, John Montgomery Ward and Jack Glasscock, has mixed results. Glasscock hit to the tune of a .545 OPS, including a .233 average and -0.1 VORP. Montgomery Ward, on the other hand, hit a ripe .335 with a .736 OPS and a 23.3 VORP.

John Clapp makes his debut on the all-time list in 20th place, while Everett Mills falls off to 22nd.

1880: Rookies shine as Anson Slumps

Editor's note: As of now, there is no minor league system. I will only be using a Triple-A system. In 1884, Triple-A play began. Stay tuned!

We already saw some of the greatest hitters of all time, Ross Barnes and Deacon White, begin to slump. White was an All-Star again in 1880, but he wasn't much better as a hitter, still hitting under .300 (.292) with a .710 OPS.

But now another great started to slump -- just as he entered his prime years. Cap Anson, who led the league in hits last season, fell from 133 hits to 104. His doubles (30 to 14) fell, along with his triple slash stats (.358/.362/.452 --> .284/.311/.363). And this is in his age-28 season. He will be 29 next year -- will he regress even more?

Roger Connor, the prospect hyped up by the White Stockings entering the year, did not disappoint, hitting .355 (2nd in the league) with a league-best 121 hits, 42 extra-base hits, and 181 total bases. George Hall, #7 on the all-time list entering the season, won the NL and Major League Triple Crown, becoming the second player ever to do so. He hit .370 with a record 7 home runs and 72 runs batted in. He has already demolished his real life stats -- he played six seasons and had 538 hits.

The NL ended their drought without a title as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4 games to 2. It was the Reds' second World Series victory. The Reds changed their team name to the Red Stockings following the season.

Clipper Flynn debuted on the all-time list in 20th place, as Andy Leonard dropped off to 22nd.

After 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, Lip Pike retired from professional baseball. Among his accolades were 7 All-Star selection, a Gold Glove, 2 MVP awards, 1 Rookie of the Month Award, 8 Player of the Month awards, 9 Player of the Week Awards, and a World Series Championship. He remains the only player in history to hit for the cycle, a feat he accomplished in 1871. Pike retires #16 on the all-time hits list with 602 and a .320 career average. In real life, he totaled 637 base hits and a .321 average.
