Settings for Curbing Steroid Numbers starting in mid-1990's

I am currently running an Oakland A's dynasty, which started in the early 1990's. I decided that I would have a strict steroid policy in the league to curb inflated offensive numbers. So, starting with the 1994 season, I tweaked the settings to bring the homeruns back to a reasonable number. Ideally, we would see HR leaders in the 30's, 40's, and maybe 50 HR range. But not multiple HR leaders popping 50 or 60 HR's.

So, how'd I do it?

I simply went to the "League Setup" page during Spring Training, and clicked the "Strategy" tab. From there, I clicked the dropdown menu for "Totals from Year:" and selected 1990. This actually came after a lot of trial and error with multiple test leagues (probably 20 or so). I had tried the raised mound era of the 1960's, the 1970's, 1988, even the 1940's... nothing seemed to be "just right." But I finally came across numbers that were to me liking with 1990.

Just be sure when you click "1990," you also have "Automatically adjust league totals modifiers for accuracy" UNCHECKED. If you leave it checked, it seems to override the league totals from 1990 and bring them back to your current era, which I don't want.

I hope that helps. I have also attached screen grabs of my other settings. Feel free to critique and weigh in, or chime in with questions if I'm missing anything. I could really use some help with financials... I am still not completely satisfied with the results there.

Here's my dynasty if you want to check it out. LINKY TO A'S DYNASTY All I ask is if you have comments about league settings, etc, keep them here in this thread, so we don't clutter the other thread with tech talk Thanks!

A few perhaps newbie questions:

If you keep your recalc on 3 years, do you tend to use that for scouting? (Hm, he's about to retire. Time to dump him.)

With 'Retire according to history' off, what happens when your recalc runs out of years? Does the player's ratings drop to 0s?

Other than that, your settings look great. I may use them myself. (Up to now I've always used greatly simplified settings to make my life easier.)

A league without steroids is definitely worth shooting for. Perhaps modern (minimal steroid) numbers from say 2009-2011 would work as well?

Truth be told, I try as much as possible to avoid looking at "real stats" or finding out when a player retires. I'm trying to keep a fog of war as much as possible, so I don't have an unfair advantage on the AI. That really bit me in the ass, for example, when I re-signed Eckersley. His $1.5 million salary is killing me right now.

For "retiring according to history," I'm not sure how that's going to work. I just recently turned that off, so I honestly don't know. But I thought it would be fun, just in case a guy's career prematurely came to an end. Kirby Puckett comes to mind.

Kirby Puckett

Why did Kirby Puckett retire?punct. Was it because he got caught with other ballplayers wives or something like that? I remember its being obvious that he still had baseball talent.

He was forced to retire at 35 due to loss of vision in one eye from a central retinal vein occlusion

Sounds cool. But, I mean come on...the As of 88-"McGwire to St. Louis" we're just about the Kings of the Juicers. 40 / 40 my rear. Those teams were packed with clear n creamers.

thank you thank you

I'm pretty sure I asked you to do this in your dynasty thread, and really appreciate your doing so.

What are you doing with the financials when those settings are changed (as I think they are) when you select the 1990 settings? Or are you manually entering the values?

If real life players are playing after the retired in real life, the fictional player development engine takes over instead of re-calc.

I have it set to automatically import financial settings after each season. I am keeping an eye on it... I'm not totally confident in it, but so far, so good.

What database are you using for your A's league?

I never check Player Retire According To History, Toad Ramsey who IRL played 6 season and went 113-124 is my 3rd all time leader in career wins
(as of 1905) at 353. Barry Bonds played until 2009 and hit 513 HR. (73 never happened) Shoeless Joe Jackson retired in 1935 at age 42? and has 3700+ hits and a lifetime avg of .353 (BTW all 3 examples are from 3 separate leagues) So no players don't drop to 0
