A Revised History of Modern Era Baseball 1901-???? - a "what if" scenario
The story behind the what if scenario:
"After a bitter contract dispute with Giants' owner Andrew Freedman, Rusie responded by publicly thumbing his nose at Mr. Freeman, which was the 19th century variant of the middle finger. He was fined $200 (he made only $2,500). Rusie refused to play until Freedman returned his money and ended up holding out for the entire 1896 season. It was a fiasco for baseball; fans boycotted and the press railed against the owners. Owners implored Rusie and Freedman to compromise; neither would budge. The holdout was finally settled just prior to the 1897 season, as the owners collaborated for recoupment of the garnished wages, as well as a $5,000 settlement. This was partially out of respect for Mr. Rusie. However, the primary motivator was the threat of legal action against the reserve clause had his case gone to court."**** (****NOTE: Taken from Wikipedia.com) What if the trial went to court and the reserve clause was abolished because Amos Rusie won his case against the Andrew Freedman??? That is the scenario for this walk, or run, through baseball history. The year is 1901 and a new era in baseball has begun. Free agency is among us as the reserve clause was abolished thanks to the court case won by Amos Rusie against New York Giants' owner Andrew Freedman and the rest of the National League. First-Year Player Draft All incoming players will be subjected to a draft with the team with the worst record being first to draft. The draft will be held in the preseason and will consist of a maximum of ten (10) rounds. Any undrafted players will become free agents. Rule 5 Draft A Rule 5 draft will be held for those seasons in which there are players that qualify. Team Changes All team changes will be noted. Playing of Games and Trades All games will be simmed. The CPU is in charge of all of the teams and the trades will be made by it and reported. Player Accolades All important player milestones and awards will be reported. Hall Of Fame The exceptional players will be inducted into the Hall of Fame immediately upon their retirement. The criteria for entering the Hall of Fame is as follows: Hitters: 3000 hits or 450 HR or 2350 hits plus a .280 average Pitchers: 300 wins or 300 saves or 250 wins plus a 3.60 or lower ERA Both: 750 VORP Last edited by captaincarl; 04-29-2009 at 10:32 PM. |

A New League Is Born!
In 1901, Ban Johnson, with the consent of the team owners, withdrew from the National Agreement and announced plans to operate independently as a second major league. The National League owners welcomed their rivals, the American League, with disdain and fear. These elements give the underdog the chance to survive. Here are the list of the teams:
Baltimore Orioles Boston Americans Chicago White Stockings Cleveland Blues Detroit Tigers Milwaukee Brewers Philadelphia Athletics Washington Senators |

1901 - AL Year In Review
When the American League opened it's first season, each team found itself loaded with talent from the NL. Probably the brightest star the first year was Nap Lajoie, second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics, who finished in third place for the AL batting title after jumping from the rival Phillies. In addition to hitting .362, Lajoie also scored 117 times to lead the new league. Connie Mack managed his first Athletics' squad that also previewed one of his most prominent collegiate finds, 25-year old pitcher Eddie Plank, who won 16 games to lead the team to a disappointing fifth place finish. Jimmy Collins jumped from the Boston NL club to manage and star for the new AL team in Boston. His team also featured one of the best pitchers to jump to the junior league, Cy Young, who finished leading the league in strikeouts with 148.
The Brewers took the first American League title by five games over the Tigers, who had battled back in the early weeks of September from 13 games out to wind up in second place. Milwaukee was led on the mound by Frank Kitson, who they had acquired in May and was the winner of the AL's first Outstanding Pitcher Award. Code:

1901 - NL Year In Review
While the upstart American League was holding it's first major league schedule, the National League was staging it's 25th season. Since it's founding in 1876, the league had survive rules changes, shifting franchises and competition from three rival leagues, establishing the National League as the powerhouse in the young field of professional baseball. In 1892 the league expanded from eight teams to twelve, some teams, like the ones in Louisville and Washington, spent almost a decade away from the first division. Late in the 1890's Baltimore and Brooklyn came under common management, as did Cleveland with St.Louis and Pittsburgh with Louisville. These didn't lead to fixing of games, but it did lead to all of the better players being on one club, leaving the other team much weaker. In response to this, the league decided to cut down back to eight teams, dropping Baltimore, Louisville, Washington and Cleveland. This left the loop in New York, Brooklyn, St.Louis, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.
The emergence on the scene of the American League not only created a second major league, it also provided an escape valve for the players. The players embraced the bidding war that developed and about thirty regulars from 1900 jumped to the new league, including stars Nap Lajoie, John McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Clark Griffith and Cy Young. The AL occupies three of the abandoned NL cities and new teams were placed in direct competition in Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. On the field, the East Coast teams were more hurt by the AL raids then the Western teams, with the possible exception being the Superbas. Brooklyn was in a dogfight with Cincinnati all season long before finally winning the NL title with three games to go. The Superbas were lead on offense by hitters "Wee" Willie Keeler and Tom McCreery. Sam Crawford led the Reds to a second place finish and won the league's Outstanding Hitter Award as he finished fourth in average, hitting .343, while leading the league in home runs with 13 and was third in runs batted in with 87. While Philadelphia finished third and boasted the arm of Doc White, the league's winningest pitcher, New York showed off the arm of rookie sensation Christy Mathewson, a 21-game winner in his first season. Interesting dynasty. So will Milwaukee stay in the American League for 1902, or will you move them?

Thanks. I'll try to make this as neat and readable as I can. After the first couple of seasons the yearly reviews will consist of both leagues instead of one for each league. How are the review write ups? Thanks guys for reading and any feedback. They are greatly appreciated. Last edited by captaincarl; 09-29-2007 at 12:44 PM. |

Suggestions:
For league champions, a full paragraph writeup of best players, best pitchers, and how easy it was to win the championship. For the other finishers, a one-sentence encapsulation. --Pet |

1902 - AL Year In Review
Halfway through it's second season, the American League found it's Baltimore franchise in the hands of the enemy, making the completion of the leagues schedule a little muddy. Baltimore manager John McGraw kept finding his way into AL President Ban Johnson's doghouse. Johnson kept getting on "Mugsy" for harassing the umpires that finally McGraw had enough and opened negotiations with John T. Brush, the chairman leading the three-manned counsil of the NL. In the middle of July, the purchase was finally made and Brush released John McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Roger Bresnahan, Dan McGann, Jack Cronin and Cy Seymour from their contracts so that they could sign with NL clubs. Baltimore at the time was 48-27, in first place three games ahead of the St.Louis Browns. The Orioles immediately got into a losing streak but somehow was able to continue to contend and finished with an 82-58 record, good enough for second place, thanks to the bats of Mike Donlin and Jimmy Williams. After a couple of days, AL President Ban Johnson found a loophole in the leagues bylaws and revoked the franchise. He decided that the league would run the team the rest of the way on AL funds.
Ban Johnson had other problems besides McGraw in 1902. The Philadelphia Supreme Court, after being pushed by the NL's Phillies, tried to use it's state law to get the players back that were raided from the NL club. Johnson said no and pointed out the Rusie vs. NL case that disolved the reserve clause. The Philadelphia Supreme Court got involved because Pennsylvania was the only state, of those that had major league baseball teams, that recognized a reserve clause. Milwaukee finished it's move to St.Louis and quickly raided the NL's Cardinals. The Browns signed Jesse Burkett, Dick Padden, Emmet "Snags" Heidrick, and Jack Harper. The Browns used the new players to repeat as the AL title champions. St.Louis, who was trailing the then first place Orioles when the National League took them over, passed Baltimore and was leading by six games heading into September. With only five games left in the schedule, the Browns clinched the AL title. Along with those players, several players continued to be lured by the higher salaries and jumped from the NL to the AL. Two of the NL stars that crossed over were outfielder Ed Delahanty and pitcher Red Donahue. Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics raided the NL's Pittsburgh Pirates and lured pitcher Rube Waddell to join their club. Code:

1902 - NL Year In Review
Another year at war with the American League has resulted in battle fatigue setting in on the Executive Committee of the NL along with it's member clubs. The league did chalk up it's greatest triumph in the purchasing of the Baltimore franchise in the rival league and releasing it's major players to sign with NL clubs. The New York Giants, using the help from incoming players John McGraw, Joe McGinnity and Roger Bresnahan, tried to get back into the race for the NL pennant but could only manage to finish fourth, 11 games behind the title winning Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pittsburgh was led at the plate by Ginger Beaumont, who won the league's batting title with a .361 average, and by Fred Clarke, who finished third in the batting title race with a .346 average plus had 85 runs batted in and 72 stolen bases, good enough for him to be awarded the NL's Outstanding Batter award. The Pirates were in control heading into September, leading by 8.5 games, but the Cincinnati Reds started a comeback but eventually was eliminated with five games to go. Cincinnati finished second thanks to the pitching of Noodles Hahn. Hahn won 28 games plus had an earned run average of 2.12 and struckout 161 enemy batters as he won the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. The Phillies were raided again by the AL clubs as the team lost Ed Delahanty, Red Donahue and Al Orth. Although they were raided for the second time in two seasons, the Phillies played well enough to finish third, ten games behind the front running Pirates. St.Louis, which suffered a major blow when it lost several players in the raid by the AL franchise in their city, finished the season in dead last, 32 games behind as the Cardinals went from fifth and contending in 1901 to worst in the NL. Just an FYI,
It looks like the players are entering the draft a year earlier than they should. That might be okay since I have the three levels of minors set up (AAA,AA,A). Because of this, "The Georgia Peach" is entering the draft after the 1903 season, which I just completed. Last edited by captaincarl; 10-06-2007 at 07:46 PM. |

1903 - MLB Year In Review
Well folks, the raidings have stopped and peace is at hand under the new National Agreement between the two, now equal, leagues. The players and managers can now concentrate on the field and the owners can start concetrating where it matters most to them, the turnstiles.
In the National League, the Boston Beaneaters held a 3-game lead then built their lead to seven games heading into September and it stayed that way as they headed into the final ten games of the season. It took them awhile but with five games to go, they clinched the NL title, staving off the threat by New York. Boston was led by the best pitching staff in the lead as they had a team ERA of a minuscule 1.88. The mound corps had three 20-game winners, Bill Dineen, Bill Reidy and Chief Bender, who won the pitcher's triple crown by leading the league in wins (26), ERA (1.73) and strikeouts (216). The Giants finished second, nine games back, thanks to the hitting of Roger Bresnahan, who led the league in runs scored with 95. St.Louis bounced back strong enough to finish in fifth after feeling the effects of several raids during the previous three years. In the American League, Cleveland and Detroit were in a dogfight until the Tigers caught fire in July and coasted easily to the AL title, eventually winning by 17 games. Detroit was led at the plate by the hitting of Jimmy Barrett and Sam Crawford, who they had signed in the preseason after raiding the Cincinnati Reds. On the mound the Tigers were lead by Wild Bill Donovan, who they also grabbed in the last player raid of the senior loop, and rookie Red Ames, who finished first in wins and ERA plus finished second in strikeouts on his way to winning the league's Rookie of the Year award. With ten games to go, the owners of the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Beaneaters had a gentleman's agreement to have the teams face each other after the end of the regular season in a nine-game series. This agreement sets up the first World Series and the first inter-league championship series since the 1890 matchup between the National League and the American Association champs. A large crowd assembled in Detroit to watch the first game of the series, won by the Tigers by a score of 1-0 behind the pitching of Red Ames. Ed Siever went the distance scattering 13 hits and leading Detroit to an 8-6 victory in game two. The series shifted to Boston for games 3-5 but it was more of the same. Wild Bill Donovan bested Bill Dineen in game three, winning 4-1 then Mike O'Neill and Red Ames pitched Detroit to victory the next two games, 2-1 and 5-2 respectively, as the Tigers swept the series in five games to win the first world's championship.
