Stay classy Atlanta
Bad calls are part of the game. Throwing stuff on the field is not.

It was not. It could have been correct if the infielder could have easily caught the ball. It also needs to be called early.

That was a horrendously bad call. The ball landed in the mid outfield. There was an earlier bad call too to give David Ross time after Lohse had began his windup and gave him a free swing to hit a two run HR.
But yeah, throwing stuff on the field is bad. They need to get this under control. Then again, if this happened in Brazil or Scotland someone would have died by now

Worse than the botched call itself is the potential to have the Braves season hinge on it.

I just looked up the rule and there actually is a fair bit of interpertation given to the umpire to judge 'ordinary effort'
But I would imagine ordinary effort would not be a ball hit so deep that the left fielder calls off the shortstop. Last edited by rudel.dietrich; 10-05-2012 at 08:10 PM. |

They cannot change the call because it cannot be overturned.

It could have been ordinary effort. A stretch but defensible. The issue was the rule was not invoked until just before the ball landed. The runners need to be informed early in order to tag up. You can see they were hung up.

No, but ATL can protest the game. Of course they wont, and even if they did MLB would never overturn it.

Yep. No way they overrule it. Like RchW said. The effort could be defensible if you 'stretch' the rule.

How time flies, Chipper started in the majors about the same time I really got into baseball glad he got on base with his last at bat, also glad the Cardinals advance (Matheny my favourite player ever).

According to the TV commentator, once the infield fly rule is called the runners are supposed to tag up and advance at their own risk. But clearly, the guy on 2nd base did NOT tag up. He was between bases when the IFR was called. So, St. Louis could've ended the inning right there by throwing over to 3rd once play resumed.
The infield fly rule is backwards. It should be "if you don't catch it, the batter gets first base and all runners advance one." |
