AI playoff roster problem

I've done both a quick-start league with the built-in 2012 rosters as well as historical replay leagues (starting anywhere in the 1970s, usually). I play in commissioner mode, and observe everything. Once in a while, I'll take some 17-year-old scrub, and edit his potential stats to turn him into a possible superstar. Then I'll watch as he develops, either becoming amazing, or not.

Anyway, the problem -- every so often, these players I've modified get dropped from their respective playoff rosters. Their team goes to the post-season, they are obviously the best player on the team, but after playing 162 games and winning the triple crown, the AI seems to think they're better suited NOT being in the playoffs.

I don't really understand what's causing this. And the AI is insistent. I'll go in and force my superstar back onto the roster, reset the lineups, etc. -- and the next day, the AI has dropped him again.

I don't do freakishly ridiculous potential numbers, so I don't think the AI is suddenly perceiving him to have horrible ratings. (And he just started 162 games, so how bad can the AI think he is?)

Can anyone explain this?
