Free Agency is Broken

Contract demands are way out of wack for free agents. Carlos quentin wants 23 million a year. Andres Torres who I benched the year prior to free agency wants 11 million per season! These are just a few examples.

After simming it does appear that the contracts they do sign for goes down from the demands a little bit, but I still feel the initial demands are too high. Like if I wanted to offer Quentin 12 mill a year instead of 23 million. He just going to get insulted and refuse to negotiate even if my offer reasonable.

It's broken in real life, too.

I agree completely. I had to offer Justin Verlander $32 million before he would sign. Every time I would make an offer another team would outbid me by a ridiculous amount.

I wouldn’t be so bad if the yearly budget would go up at the end of the season but it usually remains the same so it makes it difficult to sign free agents and still have money left to resign your current players.

Here's a formula that can help you evaluate how out-of-whack the iOOTP contracts might be:

The thing is: a player is woth what one team is ready to pay. As a Red Sox fan I ask you: do you think Crawford and Lakey are woth the money they get?

What you need is a generous owner. I started with 85m and after 4 seasons I'm on 140m.

Hey Sebastian, quick question: does the owner personality influence how willing they are to bid up and pay inflated prices? I mean, if you had the equivalent of a George Steinbrenner in your league, that would obviously be a problem for teams with less financial resources and influence what free agents thought they could get when holding out for better contracts...
