1871 Batting Title

My pitcher won they 1871 Batting Title for the NL.

It's actually the Most Vaulable Player award. If you look at the MLB quickstart you will see players like Walter Johnson won the same title. The Problem is most change it to the Batting title but it doesn't match up with history and i'm guessing the AI doesn't see it as being changed ethier.

I would like to see the game have awards that have certain parameters set to calculate the winners.

For instance, I would love to see a pitcher get the MVP Award but still have an Offensive Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year.

It could be set up so that the MVP has the highest WAR or VORP, the OPOY has the greatest number when adding AVG, HRs, and SBs, and the POY has the lowest ERA with 20+ wins.

This way, in the game's history, it won't look like Walter Johnson won the Batting Title or Offensive Player of the Year but was actually the MVP.

yeah it's always bugs me when i go to awards history and see some like Walter Johnson with the batting title. Sure i could edit the custom award myself but then couldn;t let the AI chose as it wouldn't really see it as a batting title just as an award.

How do you figure? The announcement says that Spalding won the batting title -- that means he had the highest batting average in the league. Nobody votes for the winner of the batting title.

It's really no surprise that a pitcher could win the batting title in 1871. After all, pitchers were pretty much everyday players back then. They certainly wouldn't have had any trouble getting the required plate appearances.

In the 1800's pitchers were baseball players not pitchers. Modern folk don't quite get what that means and neither does OOTP.

On a side note, I believe Dicky Pearce won the AL Batting Title with a .500 BA.

I often have the future sporting goods mogul batting clean up when I play the Red Stockings in historical. Spalding was no slouch at the plate and later played 1B when he was older and his arm weakened. That is the one thing playing with fictional players in the 19th century doesn't get right, there are the modern number of 2 way pitchers. In that period almost every pitcher could hit and play the field somewhere. On the rare days Spalding wasn't pitching he was a position player.

That was definitely the batting title for the league and Anson in the other league. If not the news would have said player of the year. Is it just me or is it a little ironic Anson's facegen has darker skin considering he led a boycott against a team with a black player on it?

i figure because in my awards history it shows 1981 Rollie Fingers win the MVP, the same award that is usally shown as Batting title under the quickstart. Now my league is an edited version of a mlb quickstart but that shouldn't affect the past awards and not when Rollie fingers has no batting average, hits or any stats at all as a batter yet it shows those stats.
This leads me to belive it was meant to be the batting title but is really the MVP

1986 Roger Clemons
1992 Eckersley
i don't think they ever won a batting but the game shows them as doing so
