the sad state of boxing

I like Vitaly and all but come on, really?!?! Unless Pac Man gets to beat down Floyd it is over...having grown up in the late 70's to 80's it's so friggin' sad!

That was an insightful post. The case you make is solid and your ellaborations spot on.

lol

Maybe that's why Manny & Floyd are waiting so long to fight because the sport (according to some) will be done after that fight.

Still lots of interesting fights left out there, I wish Sergio Martinez wasn't 35 but he's entertaining, it appears some good young European talent is coming up in the MW division.

The JMW division has guys like Lara, Angulo, Kirkland & Vanes (if he wants to fight) same with JWW & Maidana & Bradley.

Want to see what Khan does & maybe Kell Brook, Berto can be fun to watch & @ SMW, we'll have the Froch/Ward winner to face Bute in 2012 probably - that should be a good fight.

Oh dear - When Tyson Fury gets 3 million viewers on channel 5 people still think that May/Pac is the only fight anyone is interested in. Boxing isnt dieing at all - if boxing does die it'll be because of its own fights running away because they think its a sinking ship/

In my opinion, the only place boxing is comotose is the United States. That's because there is no viable American heavyweight contenders and the talent pool in the other signature divisions is either old or thin. Canadian boxers have gained in popularity. Boxing remains popular in Great Britain and throughout Europe. Puerto Rico and the Dominican republic produce world class fighters in the lower weight classes. Cuban boxers still defect to try their hand in the professional ranks. It has remained popular in Mexico, Central America and South America. Thailand, Japan, South Korea and the Phillipines are hot spots in Asia. I even think boxing has maintained its popularity in Australia. Here in the United States, we tend to see things only through our lens. It doesn't make it so though.

Totally agree, they say Boxing is as popular as Soccer in Mexico. Argentina is another great country for Boxing. In Africa Ghana, and South Africa have continued to flourish in boxing as well. A good sign for boxing in Australia, New Zeland, Fiji etc... is the fact that very popular rugby players have turned to boxing. In the US they would NEVER go into boxing, it would be to the MMA world.

Those are great examples of boxing's popularity elsewhere. What you wrote about Australia, New Zealand and the Fiji Islands is truly illustrative of the widespread appeal boxing has there. To think that as talented an athlete as Anthony Mundine would forego other sports for boxing would be unheard of here. In fact, in trying to think of professional athletes in other sports who had a serious career in boxing I can think only of Charlie Powell in the 1960's. I'm sure there were others, I just can't think of them right now. And I'm not talking about Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Mark Gastineau, or Alonzo Highsmith types.

Exactly! That's what makes boxing interesting to me, seeing top fighters from all over the world.

Yeah, the HW division isn't all that interesting but so many good fighters in the weights below.

I wish boxers would fight more often. It hurts the sport when it's biggest and most popular stars only fight 2 or 3 times a year.

They become so successful, they only have to fight maybe 2 times a year because once they become a star their paychecks are so huge.

In a sense, we're a victim of their success since we only see them rarely then.

I dislike Syracuse joining the ACC.

Boxing is nearly done in the USA. The only thing that keeps me interested are the women and this game.

^ there are a lot of hot female boxers.

Considering what a brutal sport it is, there are actually some decent looking guys who box too.

If we didn't know they were fighters, guys like Oscar or Sergio Martinez would not be the type of people you'd picture boxing.

The US just needs a new superstar to get it back on it's feet IMO.
