Need help with off-season moves
I just finished 2011 with the Astros (75-87). I have a prospect, MR Henry Villar, who was on the ML 40-man roster when I started the game. He has a major league contract. I don't want him on my 40-man roster, so I put him on waivers to designate him for assignment. He cleared waivers and was assigned to AAA.
What will happen now to his contract for next season (2012)? He does not have enough pro experience to be a minor-league free agent. Will he automatically receive a minor-league contract and will I still control his contract rights? |

Will he automatically receive a minor-league contract
No he will receive a league minimum contract for as long as you have "years until Arbitration" set. Thus, even though he's not on the 40-man roster you will still pay him his salary. If you had, for example, a 33 year old RP with a $4,000,000 contract and somehow got him off the 40-man to AAA via waivers or demotion, you will still pay him his $4 million or whatever is owed on his contract next year. and will I still control his contract rights? Yes. You control his contract until 1) he's a Minor League FA or 2) his contract runs out (after league minimum automatic resign and arbitration). |
