A question about scouting and current/potential ability

Hey guys, I wonder if someone can help me with a couple of quick questions.

I have scouting turned on with my current game, and I've ticked the option that means overall current and potential scores are calculated by "AI evaluation, not actual scores".

One small issue:

1. I've turned off the option to show potential < current ratings, but yet when I look at my roster, there are still some (young, pre-arb) players who'll be rated as say 75/35, or something like that. Is this a mistake, or a subtle message from my scout that I should get rid of this guy before he crashes?

Cheers.

Current Overall/Star ratings that are greater than potentials probably means that the player's stats from game performances is better than his ratings would predict. This shows up in the current overall rating because you've selected the option to have the overall ratings use both stats and ratings combined (it's "pure ratings," I believe, not "actual scores"). The weights given stats and ratings is shown on the AI Options screen.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense. Some of these guys have certainly had good years, stats-wise.

But they were tpyically players who had ratings of say 72/72, and after a good season or two, now have 70/25, or something.

So if AI evaluation uses this mix of ratings/last yr stats/2 yr stats/ to generate current overall ratings, does it use something seperate for potential ratings (like the pure ratings, for instance)?

Potential ratings are a separate set of ratings from the currrent. You can think of the potentials as a target towards which the current ratings will develop over time (unless the player is in age-related decline, for which he his current ratings may regress without a decrease in the potentials.

The potentials change fairly regularly, but in what direction and to what extent is determined by a number of factors, including random chance. Since you don't have viewing potentials lower than current ratings enabled, you won't see if a player is due to have a ratings decrease because he's taken a hit to his potential ratings. I'm not sure if the large discrepancy in overall ratings btw. current and potential is an indication the potentials have taken a large decrease. If the player had a potential of 72 which is now in the 20s, he could very well have taken a hit. If that's the case, I would be tempted to look in the editor if I were in your shoes to check if the potentials have dropped significantly.

Thanks again for the reply.

I think it's happened to a few players. One of them spent a fair bit of time on the DL, so that could explain a sudden drop off in potential.

From a common sense point of view though, it's hard to get your head around a 25 year old with 72/72 one month, then 70/25 the next month. You wonder what the scouts trying to say! I can kind of see why it happens, the more I read about the scouting algorthims with AI evaluation switched on. But it's a bit messy.

I may well take a peek at the editor with a couple of them, just to try and understand what's going on for future games!
