Pavlik fight - off
YOUNGSTOWN – Former World Middleweight Champion and current World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 1-rated super middleweight contender KELLY “The Ghost” PAVLIK’s professional boxing comeback took a wrong turn inasmuch as Pavlik withdrew from his upcoming 10-round bout against Darryl Cunningham today. The Pavlik-Cunningham bout was scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, OH, and was to be televised live on SHOWTIME® as the main event of a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation. Both the broadcast and the live event have been canceled. Ticketholders can get a refund by returning their tickets to the place of purchase.
“Top Rank is very disappointed at Kelly’s sudden decision to discontinue the rebuilding of his boxing career,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, Pavlik’s promoter. “Kelly’s team specifically outlined a strategy for Kelly to return to the ring in an effective fashion. Kelly’s team gave us their objectives and we set them on a course, which began last May with Kelly’s fight against Alfonso Lopez and was to continue on Saturday against Darryl Cunningham. It seems Kelly has derailed this plan.” ------------------------------ Speaking of Lopez, I saw his 5 SMW rating in TBCB but the info on him is as a FLY & he's a lefty. |

Alfonso Lopez was a Fly, same name different fighters.
I'm glad pavlik pulled out if Glen Johnson gets the Bute fight in November. That will be much more competitive.

I agree, Johnson's a tough guy. I could see Bute really hurting/beating up Kelly. Bute may not be as fast as Sergio but he's also a lefty who can punch & we saw how Sergio beat Kelly. Last edited by hamed2; 08-02-2011 at 03:47 PM. |

A 5 rating would be exceedingly generous for the guy Pavlik fought. He oozed of a 0. No offense to him, I'd be a -5.

Super middleweight contender Kelly Pavlik spoke to NBC affiliate WFMJ and told the outlet that his withdrawal from this Saturday's fight with Darryl Cunningham was a "business decision." Pavlik is not happy with money involved in his two fight deal, which involved the bout with Cunningham and a fall showdown with IBF champion Lucian Bute of Canada.
A source close to Pavlik said the boxer was not pleased after finding out that Danish superstar Mikkel Kessler was offered a far greater sum to face Bute. Pavlik was reportedly going to receive a bit over $1 million dollars. Pavlik's worth is not even close to Kessler at the moment, based on his recent performances and antics outside of the ring. "The fight is off and the Bute fight is not going to happen. I'm not going to fight a southpaw for peanuts," Pavlik said. The bout with Cunningham was taking place in Pavlik backyard of Youngstown, Ohio and Showtime was set to televise. ------------------- Gee, Kelly is like a girl who thinks she's much prettier than she really is - the ones who think they deserve millionaires as BF's. Now $1 million is peanuts? Last edited by hamed2; 08-02-2011 at 03:58 PM. |

I thought the rating was about right, Pavlik is a 7 @ 168 & was lucky to win that fight. A 5 giving a 7 everything he can handle make sense from all the fights I've simmed over the years.

I was very disappointed to hear about this. I hope Kelly can someday get his career back on track, if that is truly what he wants to do.
It was nice having an Ohio kid as middleweight champion of the world.

I hope Kelly retires, he clearly doesn't want to fight and I don;t think it has a thing to do with alcohol. All the sympathy sent his way makes me roll my eyes. I do feel sorry for Cunningham, he was probably counting on those "peanuts" to pay his bills.
