Stars changing fast

I started on 1990 as the White Sox. I traded for Griffy Jr. and has had 5 star potential and 5 stars. At the end of the season he had a 5 week injury. We ended up winning it all without him but when he came back he only had 3 stars with 3 star potential. When I finished the 1991 preseason he was back to 5 stars. Why is this?

I had played previously and had Robin Ventura get a career ending concusion at the age of 25 in the preseason and I was afraid it was a repeat.

One thing that could be happening is that the game auto-recalcs player's ability and potential depending on settings. So a player's ability may drop due to injury or age during the season and shoot back up when the game recalcs their ratings again before the next season.
