Overall Rating and Potential
First time player, liking it a lot so far.
How do these ratings work? I simmed through 1.5 seasons yesterday just too get a feel of things and Nick Weglarz of the Indians was 1 star and 1 potential in AAA. I called him up to the MLB and he was instantly 4 star overall and 4 star potential. The first offseason he went down to 3 and 3, and then at the beginning of the next season he was 1 and 1 again. Can someone make sense of it? Or is this an early season glitch? |

I'm also enjoying the game a lot as a first time player, but this is the thing which is confusing me the most. Potential ratings seem to go up and down a lot (which is confusing in and of itself), and even with scouting turned off it seems pretty random.
Is the solution to just go on minor league stats and pretty much ignore the ratings/scouting, or am I missing something? Matt |

Disclaimer: I don't own 12 yet, so this is based on my experience/understanding of 11, which is relatively limited compared to some others on the boards.
There are several factors which can impact overall and potential ratings, one of which is that the game engine will randomly (I think) give players potential increases and decreases, which is how late-round draft picks can make it into the majors. Also your scouting budget and skills impact it, if enabled. IMO, if you have scouts on, you have to also account for player stats, because your scout might be wrong. I've never played scouts off so I'm not sure what other factors might be affecting the changes for you, OaklandMatt. |
