Career ending injuries - salary obligation?

When a player suffers a career ending injury (such as a player in Spring Training in an online league that I'm in), how much of the remaining years (4 years, around 35MIL) of his remaining contract is counted against payroll?

Put the player on the disabled list, don't release him. You will only be charged with the 1 year salary. If you release him you would be stuck for all 4 years, so it is important to put him on the DL and he will retire at year end.

He might even retire mid-season if he's DLed. That's happened to me before with a guy who was out for his career. I think it ended up saving me a little money.

I love career ending injuries, even if they are done a little unrealistically. I signed Brandon Morrow to eat some innings as my 4th or 5th starter. It was an impulse buy late in Spring Training as I didn't feel one of my young guys was doing enough to earn the 5th spot and could use another year of seasoning. Grabbed him in the cheap as he had been passed over all off season.

He pitches in one Spring Training and tears his labrum, out 4-5 months. Then I get an e-mail in May that his career is done. I also lost my #3 for 6 months, so far he is healing.

I ended up having to go with the one guy who was in camp and rushing a former 1st rounder (supplemental) to the majors. The young guy has great stuff and movement but is wild.

I love the unexpectedness of it and having to scramble for options.

I got hit with mega injuries one year and had to bring up minor leaguers, AND trade for a career MnLer from another team.
