Scouting Budget
What is a good number to have in place for your scouting budget. The league average is $2,500,000 and I've got mine set at the max, which I believe is $12,500,000. Is that too much? Also, what kinda breakdown do you guys use. Right now I've got mine at 35% Majors, 15% Minors, 15% International and 35% Amateur.

I never understood the "league average" thing when it came to scouting. I've never seen it really limit teams in anyway. One game every team had their scouting budget set 2 - 3 million dollars more than the league average.

This is personal preference but I usually set mine to 2X league average with mid market teams where that extra 7.5 mil can have a good impact on draft signings or a player. One thing to note is major league scouting scouts all discovered free agents. When I found this out I raised mine since I had skimped on it before thinking it was just major league roster players and I could use stats to go by. Sometimes you find a gem teams with lower scouting budgets miss and you can sign him from the FA pool.
If you have no foreign leagues then your foreign scouting helps you find foreign hidden talent I believe. I think it does with foreign leagues as well. You just have a second function. I am not real big on minor league scouting anymore. It only covers guys on minor league rosters. It is useful if you have vets you are trying to trade for prospects but amateur is much more important. Once they are in my system stats are the major determination of moving up. Although good potential scouting is important for low minors where I want my potential guys starting first by AA and AAA it is the guys who perform best. Note: major league scouting budget covers any former minor leagues who are released since they are free agents. Amateur depends on the team. If I play bigger market and prospects are mostly to trade for vets and I will rely more on FA then I put amateur lower. For a small market team I might set amateur to 50%. Prospects are what keeps your team running with those. With a mid-market team I go 2X average. The split follows. Major league 30% Foreign 5% Minor league 30% Amateur 35% or 30,10,30,30 . Although I play more stats on minor leagues update accurate scouting is important for guys in the lower minors since that changes more quickly. |

Does anyone know if maxing out the budget to 5 times the ave. is actually worth it? Or is 4 or 3 times the ave. just as good?

I think that would depend on how much extra money you have. If you're the Yankees and you have $50 million laying around, then, yeah, it's worth it. But if that extra money you put into scouting could have been used to sign a free agent or draft pick, then maybe not.
