It's a Miracle! (69 Mets)

1969 is a popular year on these forums, and no wonder. It brings us the beginning of divisional play and four expansion teams to play with.

It also gave us one of the great surprises in baseball history, the 'Miracle Mets.'

New York had never broken 9th in the previous seven campaigns. They started off slowly here as well going 18-23 before winning eleven straight games. During the last 121 games the Mets went 82-39.

By mid-August the Mets were 9 1/2 games behind Chicago. They finished their season 39-11 to take the division by 8 games. The rest is history.

Speaking of history, here are the rules:
* Single season replay, 1 year recalc
* Historical transactions and lineup on
* Players miss seasons and retire per history (which may be redundant with the above)
* The computer will manage through the 6th inning (to help minimize my tendency to over-substitute and hopefully make the season run at a fair clip) while I'll take the rest.

I don't really know that much about the 1969 Mets, so we'll start by taking a look at the roster, then we'll jump right in.

OPENING DAY ROSTER

Catchers

Duffy Dyer (23, Dayton OH) (.333 0-0 in 3 AB in 1968)
(2-8 scale) Con 4 Gap 4 HR 4 Eye 4 Avoid K 4

Jerry Grote (26, San Antonio TX) (.282 3-31)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 3 Eye 4 Avoid 5

* Well, I've at least heard of Grote who's entering his fourth season with New York and sixth overall. I can't say I'm excited.

First Base

Ed Kranepool (24, New York NY) (.231 3-20)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 5 Eye 5 Avoid 7

* It appears '68 was a significant step back for Kranepool, who did much better in '66 and '67.

Infield

Ken Boswell (23, Austin TX) (.261 4-11)
Con 5 Gap 5 HR 3 Eye 5 Avoid 6

Kevin Collins (22, Springfield MA) (.201 1-13)
Con 4 Gap 5 HR 4 Eye 5 Avoid 5

Ed Charles (35, Daytona Beach FL) (;276 15-53)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 4 Eye 5 Avoid 5

Wayne Garrett (21, Brooksville FL) (Rookie)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 2 Eye 5 Avoid 5

Bobby Pfeil (25, Passaic NJ) (Rookie)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 2 Eye 3 Avoid 5

Bud Harrelson (24, Niles IL) (.219 0-14)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 2 Eye 5 Avoid 6

* Well, it appears the '69 Mets were in the midst of a youth movement. Perhaps that's part of why it was so 'Amazin.' Harrelson's the only name I recognize off the top of my head, and looking just at stats the only one I can count on is Ed Charles at 2B.

Outfield

Cleon Jones (26) (.297 14-55)
Con 7 Gap 5 HR 4 Eye 5 Avoid 6

Tommie Agie (26, Magnolia AR) (.217 5-17)
Con 5 Gap 4 HR 5 Eye 5 Avoid 4

Amos Otis (21, Mobile AL) (DNP at Major level in 1968)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 3 Eye 4 Avoid 4

Rod Gaspar (23, Long Beach CA) (Rookie)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 3 Eye 5 Avoid 6

Art Shamsky (27, St. Louis MO) (.238 12-48)
Con 6 Gap 4 HR 6 Eye 5 Avoid 7

Ron Swoboda (24, Baltimore MD) (.242 11-59)
Con 4 Gap 4 HR 4 Eye 5 Avoid 3

* Alright, at least Jones and Shasmky look promising. Still quite a few kids here.

Starters

Don Cardwell (33, Winston-Salem NC) (7-13 2.96 1 SV)
Stf 4 Mov 5 Ctr 5

Jerry Koosman (26, Appleton WI) (19-12 2.08)
Stf 5 Mov 6 Ctr 6

Jim McAndrew (25) (4-7 2.28)
Stf 4 Mov 5 Ctr 5

Tom Seaver (24, Fresno CA) (16-12 2.20 1 SV)
Stf 5 Mov 6 Ctr 5

* Here we seem some potential. Seaver and Koosman look like my staff aces, and even the other two don't look bad. I think wherever we're going, it'll be thanks to our pitching.

Relievers

Jack DiLauro (26, Akron OH) (Rookie)
Stf 4 Mov 6 Ctr 6

Al Jackson (33, Waco TX) (3-7 3.69 3 SV)
Stf 4 Mov 5 Ctr 4

Cal Koonce (28, Fayetteville NC) (6-4 2.41 11 SV)
Stf 4 Mov 6 Ctr 4

Tug McGraw (24, Martinez CA) (DNP at Major level in 1968)
Stf 5 Mov 6 Ctr 4

Nolan Ryan (22, Refugio TX) (6-9 3.09)
Stf 5 Mov 6 Ctr 4

Ron Taylor (31, Toronto ON CAN) (1-5 2.70 13 SV)
Stf 4 Mov 6 Ctr 6

* I didn't know Ryan started out as a reliever - or is OOTP just confused about his early career? Despite our youth here I like our relief corps. Yes, I think our pitching will make or break us. Let's see what BNN thinks.

Re: Ryan MR

Nolan had a problem with his fingers developing blisters throughout his Mets career; that and the wildness made it difficult for Gil Hodges to commit to him in the rotation. The Mets had a lot of candidates: Al Jackson was a former starter, and even Tug McGraw had been a starter, in the past. And Gary Gentry (the RL #3 starter) isn't even listed on the ML roster at the start, huh? Interesting.

Tommie Agee (who btw is from Mobile; either you or the game flipped his hometown with Otis's) is better than his '68 stats show; he came over in a trade before that season and Bob Gibson skulled him with a fastball in spring training. (To the laughing cheers of "Welcome to the National League, Tommie!" in the press box, as Roger Angell later wrote. Yes, baseball in the '60s, where your penis size was measured by how often you tried to kill the opponents. No wonder it was a dying game…and no wonder I despise Gibson [who at least had Hall of Fame talent to go with his homicidal tendencies] and Don Drysdale [who made the Hall on beanballs, the high mound, good looks, and fawning press agentry by the L.A. papers] [/rant]) The resulting concussion ruined his season (he came back too soon) and dragged his childhood pal, Cleon, down a bit as well. This year, with the high mound gone and the strike zone shrunk (and the umps clamping down at least somewhat on the manslaughter-by-pitched-ball attempts), he should contribute quite a bit.

Somewhat surprised to see BNN rate Boswell so high (4th-best 2B in baseball), when he's remembered for platooning with Al Weis (who's in the minors, I suppose?). He did start the year as the everyday 2B, though. And hitting in the 3-hole, no less!

Have at it! (I've never tried a '69 Mets campaign, despite my handle…why mess with perfection? )

Amazin: Gentry and Weis do start in the minors (or more correctly the reserves). I have real lineups on, so hopefully the AI will know to use them. Well, I have my benchmark: If Gentry DOESN'T start on April 10, then I know I need to reset the active rosters to a higher number.

While Boswell's rating surprised me a little, I'm amazed Koosman and Seaver didn't earn a stronger rating for the Mets pitching. That really appears to be 'our' strength.

I'm not a big fan of Drysdale either. You'll be happy to know that in this campaign he apparently doesn't like the lowered mound: He lost.

Question: Does anyone knew where I can get a list of the disabled/injured transactions for 1969?

April 8, 1969

New York 6 Montreal 3
WP: Dilauro (1-0), LP: Robertson (0-1)
HR: (MON) Jones 2 (2), (NYM) Shamsky (1)

New York took a 2-1 lead into the 8th when Mack Jones hit a 2-run shot ending Seaver's day. Trailing in the ninth, Jerry Grote reaches on an error by SS Maury Wills with one out, then reaches third on Ken Harrelson's single. Kevin Collins (PH for pitcher Jack DiLauro) tried for a suicide squeeze, but fouled for the second out. This brought Tommie Agee to the plate. He walked to load the bases. Art Shamsky (who PH for Gaspar in the 8th then stayed in at RF) hit a walk off grand slam to ruin Montreal's franchise debut.

We took the lead when Agee singled home Harrelson in the 3rd. In a close repetition of yesterday's game, the Expos catch up late driving our starter (Jim McAndrew) from the game. In the bottom of the ninth we have a runner on first with two outs when Art Shamsky again comes to the plate. This time he grounds out.

Rookie Montreal 3B Coco Laboy is starting to worry me. So far he's 3 for 7, and has reached base every time he comes up while I'm managing in the last three innings. He earned a run and RBI in Montreal's late comeback.

Gary Gentry was supposed to start this game. He didn't, so I'm going to expand the active roster and hope that takes care of it. We held an 8-0 lead through five innings. Though Cardwell tired in the last few innings, he held on to give us the rubber match.

Koosman pitches brilliantly, but Carlton is just a tiny bit better. Lou Brock tripled to start the ninth inning then came home when Vada Pinson grounded to first. We couldn't match them. Carlton held us to 3 hits and struck out nine. Koosman allowed 6 and struck out 12.

If you have the real transactions and lineups on, then it wouldn't matter what the active roster is because it is turned off by the game, as well as injuries.

Gil Hodges did a lot of platooning around the team. The only positions that were not platooned were left field (Cleon Jones), center field (Tommie Agee) and shortstop (Bud Harrelson). You will see this as the game goes through the actual starting lineups.

[QUOTE=CatKnight;3213819]Question: Does anyone knew where I can get a list of the disabled/injured transactions for 1969?

I kept a list that ran to late August while conducting my 1969 replay with APBA Baseball for Windows. http://www.diamond-replays.com/bbw/1969/69trans.txt

On Platooning, Les Expos, Jim Bouton, and more.

Gil didn't platoon at catcher, either. Dyer saw his share of action, but Grote was the #1.

But at this point in the season, as you'll notice, Gil really isn't platooning that often. Just the one unusual Kranepool/Swoboda platoon. (Against LHP, Cleon Jones comes in from LF to play 1B, and Rocky goes to left.) Boswell is the everyday 2B, Rod Gaspar has the RF job, and Ed Charles handles 3B. (Gil will go through a bunch of options at 3B early on; Amos Otis will get a chunk of starts there, and so will Kevin Collins. It's only later when he decides on the Garrett/Charles platoon.) Odd that Art Shamsky couldn't earn a spot at this point; it's a pretty RHB-heavy lineup, with only Boswell and Kranepool seeing much action among the lefties. (Buddy switch-hits, of course.)

Dramatic win for the Mets on Opening Day. IRL they lost a slugfest in a drizzle, perhaps best remembered for Seaver giving up a home run to Expos reliever Dan McGinn. Here's the final scoreboard:

Name: 1969Opener shrunk.jpg
Views: 1689
Size: 106.6 KB

(The Expos, of course, were not only born at Shea, they died there, too. October 3, 2004. The Mets won that one, 8-1, with Todd Zeile hitting a 3-run homer in his last at bat, during a certain amount of retirement hoopla.)

It was the 8th consecutive Opening Day loss for the Mets; they broke their cherry next year, and have since posted the best Opening Day record in the majors. (32-10 from 1970 on; this year's defeat was the first since 2005.)

Not only did the Expos win their inaugural game, but so did the Pilots. (A radio station in LA played the Angels' broadcast in the '90s; I taped it, but have since mislaid it. It's probably archived somewhere on the Web, I'd think.) And research shows, so did the Royals (4-3, 12 innings) and the Padres (2-1; the Astros started the season 4-20 before getting it together and getting back in the pennant race, so no surprise there).

Yes, Bouton is already dictating his book every night. It's a diary; the Spring Training stuff is some of the best. Of course, he's about to get sent down…but Bob Lemon (managing the Pilots' AAA team in Vancouver) is a great manager, and the Mounties are just about to go on a road trip to Hawaii, so there are compensations.

The April 10th game is famous IRL because that's when Tommie Agee hit the only fair ball into the upper deck in the 45 year history of Shea Stadium (O Lost!). Here's the marker that was placed on the spot, and is in storage somewhere even today, as I understand it.

Name: Agee Marker Shrunk.jpg
Views: 535
Size: 157.5 KB

And here's a longer view, showing where the spot was, relative to the rest of the park:

Name: AgeeSeatshrunk.jpg
Views: 495
Size: 113.9 KB

Odd that Kooz didn't start until the 4th game of the season, given that he had led the team in wins the year before and lost Rookie of the Year (to Johnny Bench) by one vote. Perhaps Gil figured the Expos would be easy meat and was saving his #2 for the NL Champs?

More, please.

captaincarl: Unfortunately this simply isn't true. Gary Gentry should have started on April 10 for NY. I confirmed that through the 'ultimatemets' database as well as Gentry's writeup on Wikipedia. OOTP gave the start to Cardwell. We know it's a mistake since Cardwell will start again today (4/12) and only last 3 innings because in game he's exhausted.

I loaded the database in OpenOffice to see if someone simply imported the lineup wrong. Nope - Gentry should have started. The 25 man roster was active. Now that I turned it off, Gentry sees action.

diamondreplays: Perfect. Thanks!

Amazin69: All four expansion teams won on Opening Day. I was quite surprised to see that on Charlton's Chronology (which I'm using to add a little meat to some of the games.)

Agee has yet to hit his monster shot (0 HR), but he's batting .444 through today's game.

I noticed that Hodges doesn't seem to be platooning yet much. I'm looking forward to see what he comes up with as the season progresses.

Cardwell starts, but it's a mistake as he's still tired from pitching two days ago. A host of relievers bail him out. New York scores on a Cardwell groundout and Charles' second homer.

Manager Gil Hodges saved Tom Seaver to face off against Cardinal ace Bob Gibson. The Mets drew first blood with a Kranepool homer and led 6-2 through five. From there we held on with Art Shamsky's PH RBI double making up for a solo homer. Blisters or not, so far I love watching Ryan pitch.

I loaded the database in OpenOffice to see if someone simply imported the lineup wrong. Nope - Gentry should have started. The 25 man roster was active. Now that I turned it off, Gentry sees action.
Thanks for letting me know. I keep double checking with the box scores at rotosheet.org myself before playing any of my games.

I also figure the the Red Sox will do much better here then with me. The reason? I'm not managing them!

A tidbit about 1969. It was the only year in which the Cy Young Award voting ended in a tie. It was in the American League between Denny McLain of the Tigers and Mike Cuellar of the Orioles.

It's ridiculous to talk about crucial series in the second week of the season, but I want this one. Chicago's going to be a pain all year for the NL East and I want to start pushing away from the pack.

New York jumped to an early lead thanks to a Tommie Agee triple and never looked back. Two three-run rallies slammed the door in Philadelphia's face. Their only run came when Johnny Callison tripled then scored on a sac fly.

News
San Diego signed FA catcher Chris Krug. The 29 year old last played at the ML level for the 65-66 Cubs.

The Yankees obtained CF Jimmie Hall for Cleveland. Hall batted .167 (2 for 12) for the Tribe this year. In '68 he batted .207 2-16 with Cleveland and California.

Oakland owner Charlie Finley angrily denounced a BNN report that the Athletics owner had died of natural causes. "I'm as fit as a fiddle," he said. "Just ask my boys (players)!"

"Finley? Dead? I wish," said a player under condition of anonymity.

Philadelphia gets all their runs on homers. We waste several opportunities to score and, for once, the other team outfields us as well.

New York tied it in the 8th when PH Kevin Collins singled home Tommie Agee. This followed a wasted opportunity when Art Shamsky tried to bring Wayne Garrett home on a suicide squeeze and failed. Tug McGraw pitched brilliantly through the ninth.

In the tenth Bud Harrelson singled, advanced on a walk and stolen base, then came home on Shamsky's sac fly. Taylor gave up one hit in the bottom half (a Roberto Clemente single), but Willie Stargell stranded him.

I think it's been 3 games since we've had an XBH. That's not good. Philadelphia and Chicago won - that didn't help either as we fall into third place 2 games back.

Overall a very tame game. We scored in the first when Kranepool brought home Rod Gaspar, then the Pirates nickel and dimed us to death. A fourth inning rain delay that lasted almost an hour chased both starters out making this a battle of bullpens.
