The Republic of Hampton: A Fictional League
Hey everyone.
I'm giving this whole dynasty thing one more shot. I've created a fictional nation (The Republic of Hampton), and have thought of a history and backstory. As Hampton's baseball history evolves, the story will be told through newspapers, letters, journals, and reports. I hope you will have as much fun reading this story as I will playing it. So, without further ado, here is the story of The Republic of Hampton...

THE REPUBLIC OF HAMPTON established 1921 ![]() A PRE-BASEBALL HISTORY Early Years Hampton is a large island territory located about 600 miles off the coast of France. Although it is located closer to the coast than the new world, it was not discovered until 1456, when British merchant Charles Hampton stumbled upon the island after he was knocked off course by a hurricane. After alerting the British government of the unclaimed land, it was quickly claimed and colonized. As a result, King Henry VI named the territory after him. The territory's capital, St. George, grew to about 50,000 residents by 1475, and three other major cities: Salem, Branford, and Westwick, were established. The British Government spent a considerable about of money and time exploring this new land, and settlers poured in by the hundreds each month. The land was a key area in shipping, as well as a good defense center for the British. In all, it was a huge gain to control the island. The Silver Kingdom In 1498, when exploring a mountainous area, pioneer John Oxford discovered a small silver deposit sitting near a mountain. When British officials were called in to investigate, it was found that the mountains (now called the Oxford Mountains) contained more silver than anywhere else in the world. Several mining towns sprung up as English people were looking to make a fortune with this new discovery. The major mining town of Heartpool, founded in 1503, still stands today. By 1510, England was the largest silver exporter in the world, and many English settlers had made a fortune through silver trading. Cities began to appear in the North, including Port Silver, a major shipping center of the time. Hampton's total population hit 250,000 by mid-1522, and cities began to expand to the south. No One Expects the Spanish Inquisition! In 1544, Hampton was invaded by Spain, who wanted the land for its precious natural resources. The British Army was taken by surprise and lost control of the island in five days. Spain controlled Hampton until 1547, when Britain bought the land back from them due to rising maintenance costs. However, the Spanish control had taken its toll. When the English regained control in 1548, the population dwindled to about 145,000 (settlers fled back to England), and it took many years of rebuilding to regain its original stature. The population did not reach 250,000 again until 1617, but the mining industry eventually recovered. Room to Grow The mining industry began to be fueled by the slave trade from Africa, and Hampton flew to 1,000,000 by 1720. Once the Americans won the Revolutionary War, many British loyalists fled to Hampton, eventually resulting in a population of 1,100,500 by 1781. Hampton was industrialized in the 1820s, as population continued to grow. In 1819, Samuel Chinningsworth invented the steam ship on Lake Stovall, a major innovation in the world of that time. Following the American Civil War, Hampton followed in the US's footsteps and let all slaves free. Industry remained steady for the time, as population grew and grew. By 1920, the population sat at 3,240,000. Independence In 1922, debts from World War I caused the British Empire to stop supporting Hampton, which angered the people there. Hampton threatened another war if they did not get support or independence. The British, not wanting any more trouble, stuck with the latter. Hampton became a Republic, replacing the British Monarchy (they wanted a fresh, new government). World War II Hampton sided with the Allies in World War II, but suffered heavy losses. Westwick was wiped off the face of the Earth when it was bombed by Germany in 1944. Following this, Hampton retaliated by dropping an atomic bomb on Berlin, forcing a German surrender. Hampton was hailed by the United States as a guardian of freedom, and the US sent over aid workers to help clean up the damage in Hampton. It was on one day, a sunny July afternoon, that American aid worker John O'Roy and a few of his co-workers picked up a baseball bat and gloves and started playing a pickup game. Locals were intrigued, and, looking for a revitalization after the war, they wanted to play baseball, as well... Part 2: Baseball History, will be posted tomorrow...Stay tuned! ![]() Present-day Hampton

I used Adobe Illustrator for the map and flag, it's quite a good program.
