Newbie Q: Lahman & Already Retired Players

When importing using the Lahman DB, say into year 1975, do players who retired prior to 1975 get imported in any way? In other words, would I be able to view Cobb's stats at all in my new 1975 league?

No. But what you can do is import Cobb based on the season after he retires (you may have make a 0 entry for him in that season) then give him a career ending injury. When he retires after the season he would show up in your league history and on all career leaderboards. Repeat as necessary.

Someone has already done this for the 2002 season... you would have to do this on your own for a different season.

So you're saying I'd individually import the retired player(s) that I wanted in my 1975 league?

Or if I wanted to import several retirees, I could just add a 1975 season for them with all 0's and then do what you said. I see. Thanks!

Actually, that won't work. If you just add a 1975 year to Cobb, it won't import his previous years. It only seems to import the last 30 years, which I wouldn't think would be the case, but it seems to be. I say this because I've tried this approach. The game only seems to import as far back as 30 (or is it 25?) seasons before the year of import.

However if you add a 1929 season with 0's for Cobb and import him based on the 1929 season (import player option from the Free Agents screen). Then it should work.

Just be aware that if you do it this way, it will take a LONG time and the birthdates will all be wrong. It is, however, the only way I know of to do it.

Just to confirm that I didn't miss something in my conversion, let's just modify my hypo to say I started a season in 1932. Given that Cobb retired less than 30 years prior, would entering a "zero" season for 1935 import his stats? I don't see them, but I may have screwed up.

I'll use your 1975 example to explain this.

If you want to include certain career leaders into your league then the best time to do it would be to wait until you have completed your first season (ie prior to hitting 'proceed to next season' import all the players.) In most cases the player(s) will retire when you proceed to next season and you wouldn't have to worry about giving them injuries. As long as the player doesn't get any major league playing time the year won't be added to his stat card.

You'll want the use the last year after they retired (ie you would enter 1929 for Ty Cobb since he retired in 1928.) He will enter the league with his career stats complete. The only thing is that his birthday will be adjusted to reflect him being 42 in the year '1975'.

This is one thing I'd love to see improved upon. I'd love to be able to tell the computer to import all players between year x and year y with more than z at bats or something along those lines. As it is, I'm turned off by doing historical replays because I feel compelled to start in 1901 (first modern year) so that I have an accurate history, but I really don't enjoy playing in the deadball era. The game's AI doesn't handle it well.
