Nicknames
How often do you give players nicknames, and do you follow any patterns?
This came up because I have a new right fielder named John Williams, and I've been thinking about Star Wars nicknames for him. In another thread, "The Composer" was proposed, and while I have considered it, I don't think it sounds enough like a nickname he'd actually end up with. Of course, he'd probably end up getting called "Star Wars" or something, and that isn't really any better. So far I've only given one of my players a nickname: Ken Murphy, our hugely popular all-star quality first baseman. I called him "Luck of the Irish" because he seems to have a gift for getting hits to fall when they matter most. The game nicknamed my third baseman "Rock and Roll", so I decided it was a Willie Mays kind of thing -- he's always saying, "Come on, guys! Let's rock and roll!" That sort of expression.

I never give my players nicknames, I just let the AI do it. I always thought that the nicknames were just random, but everytime I see a player with a nickname, I always see a way that the name fits him. I was pleasantly surprised when I seen a player named Joseph 'Something' (I can't remember his last name), but the AI gave him the nick name 'Little Joe'. I thought that was pretty cool.

I'll give them nick names if it fits.
For instance, I have a center fielder named Sam Hadden. I felt, Sam "The Mad Hatter" Hadden had a nice ring

John Williams is a composer, conductor and pianist. Since I think he not only composed the music for Star Wars but conducted the London Symphony Orchestra when the music was recorded you could give him the nickname:
Maestro Of course it would be a bit better if he was a slick fielding infielder or a strikeout artist. |

I love giving nicknames. I will google the players last name to see if the are any hits or just get creative.
Here are a few... Rupert "King" Salomon Columbus "HGH" Bumpus-He played effectively into his 40's Richard "The Mechanic" Honea- He was an up and coming ace on my staff with Salomon and Bumpus. I named him after the Charles Bronson movie. Raymond "The Vet" Mungo, think Fight Club. I almost named his "Blazing Saddles" but went with Fight Club instaed. Richard "Hanging Gardens" Fuller. Our MVP is The Babylon Award. I should rename him "Glass Joe" or J.D. Fuller for all the time he has spent on the D.L. Carlos "The Backstop" Taku "Save the Cheerleader" Hiro I didn't do this one but I like it Lucas "My My" Sharona Edit: Servan "Little Miss" Moffit T.R. "She's only 17" Winger
