Two perfect games in 1 year? Obviously the pitchers are still on the juice.

As if there were any doubt he's the best pitcher in baseball, and now he does this.

I missed the game due to work. Screamed in joy when I was leaving and saw the headline on espn.com, which caused some weird looks.

Caught the replay on CN8. Amazing performance by an amazing pitcher, unbelievable. Took some of the sting out of the Flyers losing last night.

Stupid Newsday, whose web site I love to hate, did not publish this sidebar online so I'll have to type it out:

Perfect games losing luster?
Only 20 pitchers have thrown perfect games in major league history, but Roy Halladay's gem last night was the third perfecto in the past 10 months... the first time in the modern era that there were a pair of perfectos in the same season...
I'm already tired of typing on their behalf. The gist was perfect games, occurring increasingly more frequent in recent years, may not seem as special as they used to in the mid-20th Century.

Look at the table below of major league perfect games since 1880 (bless Baseball Reference - already updated with yesterday's game - they're great, aren't they?). 130 seasons, and 11 perfect games in just the last 30 years. 55% of the games in only 23% of the time.

Not taking anything away from Halladay, a future HoF pitcher for sure now. Just saying, how special can it feel to him coming only three weeks after the last guy pitched a perfect game?

Leave it to a Yankee fan to try and demean a great accomplishment. Gotta come up with something to try and take away from it don't you.

Instead of flaunting a bunch of numbers, try putting it in perspective. It doesn't happen very often, why should it mean less just because it was done 3 weeks ago?

Take into consideration the fact that's a few more teams in the league now then there was back in the early part of the century. There's lot more games played now isn't there? Does that stat mean anything to you Mr Yankee fan????????

I just can't believe that you'd have to try and find something to make it look like Halladay's feat wasn't that special. You probably stood up and cheered when A-Rod's line drive hit Huff in the head to didn't you?

Now work it out on the basis of total games per season. Since 1998, for example, there are 2,430 games per season; this is nearly twice the amount games played in a season during the 16-team MLB days (1,232). In other words, one season today contains as many games as did two seasons in the 1950s or 1930s. From 1977-92, there were 2,106 games scheduled per season; that's 1.71 times more games than in the 16-team MLB seasons.

EDIT: Here's a quick example of the difference. From 1980-2009, and excluding the 1981 and 1994 strike seasons, there were 63,252 scheduled MLB games. Those 28 seasons are the numerical equivalent of 51 seasons of the 16-team MLB size in terms of games scheduled.

What the hell is your problem? Attacking him because he's a Yankee fan? Really?

Thanks, guys. I had to get over that kind of stuff in order to participate here as a baseball (and other sports) fan, but I'll be damned if I am going to hide my love for the New York Yankees because of such spite.

Bluenoser, leave aside my having said "Not taking anything away from Halladay, a future HoF pitcher for sure now." I was talking about the prevalance of perfect games in recent MLB history, not denigrating what Halladay accomplished. A perfect game is rare, sure, but so relatively many in recent years may be making it less of a momentous occasion. Period.

You cannot know me but you have been around for awhile. Perhaps you have read some of my posts here. If you had, maybe you would have realized that there is no way that I could have "stood up and cheered when A-Rod's line drive hit Huff in the head."

I am a human being, an American, a sports fan, a baseball fan (especially) and a Yankees fan, in that order. The principles of any one of those levels prohibits me being the type of person that you think I am.

On the other hand, you have just demonstrated the type of person that you are. Therefore, you join two others on my ignore list. Goodbye.

And, as my quick-and-dirty scheduled game analysis shows, the argument is flawed. You can't analyze the occurrence of perfect games using calendar years, one has to use games played. And more games played equals more chances for a perfect game to occur.

THAT being said, perhaps I should have stressed this more strongly: Way to go, Roy Halladay. Good for you, good for the Philadelphia Phillies, and good for BASEBALL! My Yankees cap is off to you, sir.

Now, let's hear more from some of the Phillies (or Jays) fans here, shall we?

[EDIT]

LGO posted in the meantime. Point, LGO. Please see below.

Good points, LGO. This does explain things to some extent. But, whatever, I was just reporting the point of view, not necessarily supporting it. A perfect game is definitely special. NO DOUBT about it. Just divide 20 by these numbers.

Well, then add me to your ignore list because my first thought is why is a Yankees fan coming in to cut down a Phillies' accomplishment. After the World Series last year...and the immense amount of gloating from Yankees fans I've had to hear as a Phillies fan...your comment seemed like another Yankees fan jumping on.

You may not like to hear that but there's no love lost between New York and Philadelphia. I don't take Yankees fans at face value at first. A lot of other Philly fans won't either.

So he may have over-reacted here...you may have as well.

Although his comment about Huff being hit was definitely out of line. That was just dumb.

But, he never said that halladay's perfect game was just meh, as much as he was saying that perfect games in whole have lost their luster, which I am inclined to agree with.
