(Sorta) History of Modern Baseball -- 1901 to ???? -- take too many to count
If at first I don't succeed, I'll keep on trying 'til I do succeed.
1) Players will enter each year on original team 2) No free agency until 1975-76 off-season 3) All transactions, including player jumping, will be done by me until preseason of 1903, then AI will control all teams 4) HOF induction will be immediate, no 5-year wait If anyone would like to have a player followed (ie, stats for each year for Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, etc.) please let me know. |

1901 Review
A new league was first conceived and nurtured in the minds of Western League President Ban Johnson and White Sox owner Charlie Comiskey. Johnson turned the league into the strongest of the minor leagues within 2 years after taking the helm. Thanks to arranging for solid ownership for each franchise and strongly backing his umpires in all disputes, the fans started coming to this firmly controlled League's games. In 1900, the NL reduced its franchises from 12 to 8 and the newly christened American League moved a franchise into the just abandoned Cleveland area and a franchise was placed in Chicago, after the reluctant consent by the Cubs after Johnson agreed to keep the league as a minor league. In 1901, Johnson made his move. The AL withdrew from the National Agreement and declared its intention to now become a second major league. The AL also erased its midwest region character and placed franchises in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia now had franchises in both the AL & NL. To obtain players, the AL raided the senior loop for stars as well as everyday players with large salaries offered by those financially sound owners in the AL.
When the AL's first season opened, each team found itself infused with talent from the older league. Possibly the brightest star that first year was Socks Seybold, outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics, who copped the league's first Outstanding Hitter Award after jumping over from the NL's Reds after taking 1900 off. In addition to hitting .319, Lajoie also drove in 90 runs and hit 20 home runs. The Chicago White Sox took the first AL title by a single game over a Boston club which suffered a mid summer pitching collapse and fell as far as 6 games behind before making a late season rally. The Pale Hose were led by Dummy Hoy (.340-2-62) and Clark Griffith (22-13, 2.87 ERA). Boston finished in 2nd place, being led by the bats of Jimmy Collins (.282-5-62) and Buck Freeman (.319-14-86) along with former 11-year NL veteran Cy Young (20-12, 2.38 ERA), who was named the AL's first Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. Despite pending litigation in the courts and a declared state of war with the NL, the American League was off and running. While the upstart AL was playing its first major league schedule, the established NL had finished its 25th campaign. The entry of the AL onto the major league stage also opened an escape value for the players. The bidding war between the leagues allowed about thirty 1900 regulars to jump from the NL to the AL. The new league occupied three of the abandoned NL cities of the 1890's and new teams were placed in direct competition with clubs in Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. St.Louis and Pittsburgh, along with Brooklyn, provided a closely ran contest that was finally won by the Cardinals on the next to last day of the season. Four baseball immortals topped the batting lists. Honus Wagner hit .349 to lead the league and brought Pittsburgh to the senior circuit's title. Cincinnati's Jake Beckley (.348) and Philadelphia's Ed Delahanty (.341) followed close on Wagner's heels, while Jesse Burkett of St.Louis hit 13 home runs to tie for the lead in the senior circuit. As Pittsburgh proudly displayed the NL's biggest winner, Jesse Tannehill (24-9, 2.12 ERA), the New York Giants, unveiled the arm of Christy Mathewson, a 14-game winner in his first full season. After the 1901 season, the NL owners broke into two factions and the deadlock resulted in the formation of a 3-man directorate of John T. Brush, A.H. Soden and James A. Hart to assume the direction of this shaken league. Code:

1902 Review
Midway through its second season, the American League found its Baltimore outpost in the hands of the enemy, making the completion of the league schedule a muddy issue. Baltimore manager John McGraw got fed up with AL president Ban Johnson that he started negotiations and that resulted in the Orioles being bought by John T.Brush, the Chairman of the NL Executive Committee. The new owner released McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Roger Bresnahan, Dan McGann, Cy Seymour, Joe Kelley and Jack Cronin to sign with the NL clubs, leaving Baltimore with a skeleton crew. On July 17, Ban Johnson used a league regulation to revoke the franchise. The team then became operated by the AL the rest of the season using league funds and Wilbert Robinson was named manager. The Orioles, who had been in a fight with the Browns, Athletics and Bronchos, were 11 games behind and in 4th place and ended up in last place, 38 games behind. Ban Johnson had more problems in 1902 than just the Orioles and the mess caused by John McGraw. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court presented the AL with a court setback by ordering the league to Nap Lajoie, Bill Bernhard and Chick Fraser to leave the Athletics and rejoin the Phillies. Fraser returned to the Phillies, but Johnson found a loophole in the Quaker state law and transferred the contracts to the Cleveland club, who at the time was leading the AL. All the other states involved in this fight ruled against the reserve clause and the other jumpers were allowed to remain where their new clubs. St.Louis replaced Milwaukee in 1902 and raided their NL crosstown team and lured Jesse Burkett, Bobby Wallace, Dick Padden, Snags Heidrick, Jack Harper and Jack Powell to the Browns. Besides the St.Louis jumpers, Ed Delahanty, Elmer Flick and Red Donahue were other top names that left their NL clubs for their new clubs in the AL. The Browns were leading the junior circuit by 11 games heading into Labor Day. The Browns were leading the Athletics by 8 games when Lajoie and Flick joined the Bronchos and held on to win the AL pennant by a 2-game margin. Bobby Wallace (.333-0-55) and Jesse Burkett (.306-7-75) led the team at the plate and the mound staff was led by the AL Outstanding Pitcher, Jack Powell (23-10, 2.09 ERA) and Jack Harper (22-12, 3.16 ERA). Philadelphia ended up in second place, led by Harry Davis (.315-11-113) and Socks Seybold (.312-13-126) at the plate and on the mound by Tom Walker (22-12, 2.71 ERA), Andy Coakley (20-14, 2.80 ERA) and Eddie Plank (20-14, 1.87 ERA). The Cleveland Bronchos finished in third place, 5 games behind, thanks to the power hitting of Charlie Hickman (.342-14-85) and Nap Lajoie (.395-8-74) and the arms of rookie Addie Joss (20-13, 3.01 ERA) and Earl Moore (18-17, 2.32 ERA).
In the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates managed to avoid any losses to the AL's raiding tactics for the second consecutive season and romped to a 10-game pennant winning margin over the distant runner-up, Cincinnati. Honus Wagner (.327-5-77), Fred Clarke (.315-4-99) and Ginger Beaumont (.319-2-82) led the way for the Bucs squad. Jesse Tannehill (27-7, 1.85 ERA), Sam Leever (24-11, 2.51 ERA) and Deacon Phillippe (21-13, 1.99 ERA) gave the Pirates three 20-win aces. Cincinnati's second-place finish was due in part to the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Sam Crawford (.372-10-92) at the plate and the pitching of Noodles Hahn (23-10, 1.68 ERA) and Bill Phillips (20-13, 2.64 ERA). After practically losing all of its offense and top pitchers to the AL, Philadelphia dropped to last place. The New York Giants, who started the season slowly, could not stop from finishing 31 games behind even with the infusion of Baltimore talent. Code:

1903 Review
The raiding stopped and peace came to the baseball world under a new National Agreement between two equal leagues
The Chicago Cubs won their first National League pennant of the modern era by taking the lead at the beginning of June then holding on and clinching the title with 10 games remaining. Johnny Evers (.271-1-68) Johnny Kling (.267-3-75) and Frank Chance (.256-5-63) led the way at the plate. On the mound, the NL's Outstanding Pitcher Frank Glade won 26 games with Carl Lundgren and Bob Wicker winning 22 games each to pace the Cubs. The St.Louis Cardinals finished in second place, 10 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Jimmy Slagle (.333-0-49), Patsy Donovan (.291-0-54) and Jake Beckley (.277-3-73) and the hurling of pitchers Kid Nichols (23-8, 1.48 ERA) and Bob Rhoads (19-11, 2.17 ERA). The Giants rose into third place in the first full year under John McGraw's leadership. Roger Bresnahan swung the stick at a .300-2-63 clip and fellow re-jumper Joe McGinnity won 21 games to lead the Giants. At the top of the standings, Boston won their first title with less than a week remaining in the season. The AL's Outstanding Pitcher Cy Young (27-7, 1.83 ERA) led the way on the mound and the bats were led by the junior circuit's Outstanding Hitter Buck Freeman (.303-17-97) and George Stone (.313-7-52). The Philadelphia Athletics finished in second place, eight games behind, due to the hitting of Socks Seybold (.268-9-74) and Harry Davis (.268-9-77) and the pitching of 17-game winners Eddie Plank (17-16, 2.53 ERA) and Rube Waddell (17-16, 2.47 ERA). The two pennant winners became teams of destiny when the owners agreed to pit their clubs against each other in the fall in a nine-game series for the "world's" championship. The agreement between the two magnates set up the first World Series and the first inter-league championship since the 1890 match of the National League and the American Association champs. A lot of people were on hand to witness the first game, a match up between the legendary Cy Young and Cubs starter Jake Weimer, who was the NL's Newcomer of the Year. Young's fastballs were batted around to the tune of single runs in both the third and fourth innings and 2 in the eighth to carry Chicago to a 4-2 win. The Pirates took a commanding 3-games-to-one lead before Boston was able to come back in game #5 to get their second win, a 7-0 drubbing behind the 3-hit pitching of Cy Young. The Pirates won games six and eight to capture the first world's championship, 5-games-to-3. Pitcher Carl Lundgren (2-0) and catcher Johnny Kling (2 HRs) were the stars for the Cubs. Code:

1904 Review
In the American League, the Boston Americans took the lead at the beginning of August and by the end of the month had only a .001 percentage lead over the then second place Cleveland club. From there, it was a tight race the rest of the way. Going into the last day of the season, the Americans and the Naps were tied. Cleveland won their game but the Highlanders' Jesse Tannehill threw a shutout against Boston to eliminate them. Led by a lineup that included the AL's Outstanding Hitter, Nap Lajoie (.346-5-91), Elmer Flick (.285-2-68), and Bill Bradley (.282-5-56), the strength of the team was it's pitching, which was led by the arms of Ed Killian (23-15, 2.43 ERA), Bill Bernhard (22-16, 1.74 ERA) and Addie Joss (20-14, 1.69 ERA). Boston ended the season in second place, 1 game behind, and were led at the plate by Fred Parent (.255-3-41), Buck Freeman (.246-10-67) and Hobe Ferris (.221-9-64) and on the mound by their four 20-game winners: Cy Young (23-16, 1.89 ERA), Bill Dinneen (22-15, 1.86 ERA), Long Tom Hughes (21-14, 2.15 ERA) and Norwood Gibson (20-18, 2.03 ERA). The Philadelphia Athletics finished in third place, 8 games behind Cleveland, thanks to the hitting of Harry Davis (.244-10-72) and the pitching of 20-game winners Rube Waddell (21-16, 2.08 ERA), Weldon Henley (20-18, 1.81 ERA) and Eddie Plank (20-15, 2.09 ERA).
In the senior circuit, the New York Giants took the lead at the beginning of June then held off a threat by the Pittsburgh Pirates to win their first pennant in the modern era. George Browne (.290-4-74) and Moose McCormick (.283-3-90) led the way at the plate and the mound crew was led by 20-game winners Joe McGinnity (23-10, 2.01 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (22-16, 1.73 ERA). The Pirates ended up in second place, 2 games behind, thanks to a pitching staff led by Doc Scanlan (20-14, 2.81 ERA) and the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Deacon Phillippe (25-10, 1.52 ERA) and at the plate by the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.329-2-72). Chicago finished the season tied for third place, 4 games behind the winning Giants, thanks to the bat of Frank Chance (.290-2-55) and the arms of Bob Wicker (21-14, 1.77 ERA) and Jake Weimer (24-14, 2.23 ERA). The St.Louis Cardinals were the other team tied for third place. They were led at the plate by Jake Beckley (.293-3-62) and Homer Smoot (.271-5-69) and on the hill by Win Kellum (23-11, 1.89 ERA) and Chappie McFarland (26-12, 1.61). The American and National Leagues coexisted without incident during the season, but the fall was a different matter. The Americans and Naps offered to meet either of the NL leaders, the Giants, but the President of the Giants stated that he considered the NL to be the premier league so they would decline the offer so there was no World Series played at the end of the 1904 season. 1905 Review
In a pitchers year which saw only three regulars .300 hitters in the American League, the Philadelphia team batting average of .232 was good enough to score a league 3rd best 523 runs and bring the Athletics their first AL championship. The White Elephants rise to the top, and their jump from a 1904 third-place finish, came about via Socks Seybold's team-leading .265 batting average, along with Harry Davis's 11 home runs and 66 RBIs and the arms of southpaws Rube Waddell (21-15, 1.91 ERA), the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Eddie Plank (20-15, 2.53 ERA), who turned in great years but were complemented by the development of Chief Bender (19-10, 2.12 ERA) and Andy Coakley (20-15, 2.06 ERA) into reliable starters. The foursome, although mostly responsible for a team ERA of 2.20, had to take a back seat in team earned run honors to the St.Louis Browns, who walked off with the crown on a sparkling 2.04 performance. Although St.Louis's pitching was rich enough to lead them to a second place finish, the first three months saw them in a dogfight with Boston and the heavy hitting Cleveland club while the Athletics sat in fourth. By the beginning of August, the Mackmen had leap frogged over the three of them and held on to clinch the title with three games to go. St.Louis finished in second place thanks to a pitching staff led by 20-game Barney Pelty (20-17, 1.91 ERA) and the bat of Harry Arndt (.259-0-38). The Americans ended in a tie for third place with Cleveland. The Americans were led by the arms of 20-game winners Cy Young (20-18, 1.78 ERA) and George Winter (22-9, 2.24 ERA) and at the plate by George Stone (.329-2-63) and Jimmy Collins (.259-3-87). Cleveland's heavy hitting attack was led by the bats of Nap Lajoie (.326-2-68), Elmer Flick (.272-2-65) and Nig Clarke (.298-5-68) and the pitching of Earl Moore (19-18, 2.67 ERA) and Bill Bernhard (23-13, 2.27 ERA).
In the National League, the New York Giants went wire-to-wire to repeat as league champions and clinched the title with 10 games remaining. The Giants's attack was led by the duo of George Browne (.326-6-72) and George Davis (.314-1-92). The mound staff was led by Joe McGinnity (22-9, 2.04 ERA), the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Christy Mathewson (26-10, 2.22 ERA) and Red Ames (22-10, 2.74 ERA). The Cincinnati Reds finished the season in a tie for second place, 11 games behind, thanks to the bats of "Turkey" Mike Donlin (.318-4-82), Cy Seymour (.316-6-94) and Harry Steinfeldt (.287-7-88) and the arms of Buck Ewing (21-15, 2.52 ERA), Charlie Case (21-13, 2.00 ERA) and Orval Overall (23-12, 2.55 ERA). The Pittsburgh Pirates finished tied for second place, featuring the hitting duo of Fred Clarke (.315-1-101) and the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.330-7-86) and the arms of Deacon Phillippe (24-12, 2.56 ERA) and Jack Pfiester (22-12, 2.07 ERA). After a one year interruption, the World Series resumed with a dazzling pitching performance by the Giants's duo of Harry Howell (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.06 whip) and Christy Mathewson (2-0, 1.32 ERA, 0.86 whip), holding the Mackmen to win the series, 4 games to 1, and their first world's championship. Philadelphia's manager Connie Mack had this to say about Christy Mathewson, "He is great to watch as long as he is not pitching against your team." Code:
