Creating custom logos question

This may be newbish, but I have created a fictional league of the 1905 season and teams, and I wanted to use old style logos and pics I found on the net.

The problem is that with my limited imaging skills I am unable to hide the background, as the Ootp generated pictures do. I have been able to get around this by makeing the background color the same as the color of the teams hat, jersey or team color.

I was wondering if anyone new how to make a transparent background that would work for any color, in the the the oopt pictures do. Right now I have used paint as well as a free one I found called "twisted brush open Studeo"

If someone can guide me through how to do it with one of them or recommend another program to try I would appreciate it.

You need to save the files in PNG format, which can have a transparent background. You need to remove the background of the image. As far as free programs, Paint.net, the GIMP and Irfanview are popular. Inkscape is also used for vector images.

I got gimp and with a little help form an imaging friend I got them converted to png and the back ground transparent, this will save a lot of time if I change uniform colors as seasons go by

now we just need home and away uniforms
