USBL - The Carolina Pines - A Fictional League

One of the best aspects for the OOTP series is the ability to create fictional baseball universes and watch them unfold based on the parameters that you set forth. As many of you are aware there is a treasure trove of logos, facepacks, stadiums, and other add-ons to totally customize your OOTP experience. Well that’s what I did. After several failed MLB dynasties and some other fictional ones that never seemed to give me the end result that I wanted, I think I’ve found one that will give me (an hopefully you) some enjoyment in watching how it plays out. The first few posts may be wordy, but that’s only because I’m trying to figure out the best way to report what’s happening with the league and my team without boring you too much, but still with enough information to follow along.

The league is called the United States Baseball League (USBL) and it features 32 teams in 2 leagues broken down into 3 divisions with between 5 and 6 teams per division. Here is a snapshot of the league:

I created the league back in 1945 and simmed 50 years to get some history and took over the Carolina Pines in 1995.

I use a balanced schedule with no inter-league play and the playoffs follow those of the real life MLB post-season with Wild Card and Division Winners qualifying.

There are also 3 levels of minor leagues (AAA, AA, and A), the leagues are:

As the days progress and I get things ready for the ’95 season I will begin to post a ‘capsule’ of each team that details their history, overall record, championships, affiliates, and any other relevant data.

As you can see from above, I didn't get all that creative with some of the team names. Truth be told I really liked the Cavaliers logo that I found and I use the Cowboys 'Star' as their logo as for some of the minor league teams listed below I also borrowed from the NHL and other sports and even some old school minor league teams. Anyway, please be patient with me on this, I want to make this fun for me to play as well as fun for you to read, take care!

As you can see there are several teams that have had almost no post-season appearances and a healthy number of teams with no championships either. The Carolina Pines did win their division last year, but have never won a USBL title, let's hope that I can change all that!!

There are some trouble spots in terms of upcoming free agents, both Julian Mejia and Will Reynolds have both notified me that they will be entering the free agent market after this season, so we'll have to wait and see where we stand near the trading deadline and that may determine if we try and send these guys to another team for some prospects instead of losing them to free agency. The only problem with my plan is that Will Reynolds is 38 years old and hasn't garnered much attention this offseason, so I may just have to let him go, BUT if he's a Type A free agent and does sign with someone else next winter at least I'll get a draft pick for him.

Please ignore the previous post about the 1995 season. Well, let me explain why. As I said earlier I think one of the best aspects of OOTP is the ability to create your own universe and customize and watch teams and players grow and blossom. I have always tried to do historical MLB dynasties and I always end up with a team of All-Stars because I'll go out and trade for big names. That's not the right way to do it. Because in a Braves dynasty I had, while I had what equated to a 2005 NL All-Star team on my roster, a guy named Kit Pellow won the NL MVP Award, because his ratings were better than pretty much everyone on my team. When we was placed on waivers in Spring Training I didn't pay any attention to him because he's not a 'big name,' and it turns out he was the best player in the league. I tend to look at the name not the ratings, that's why I am focusing on fictional leagues right now, it will force me to look at ratings and all the other things that go into a player other than a big name. I have a Cooperstown dynasty going as well, but that's different because there aren't any transactions in that one. Long story long, I don't know why I chose 1995 to start, I guess it was because I got tired of waiting for my CPU to sim to present day, but last night I decided to stop what I was doing and fast forward to 2009. So that's what I did, it is currently January 1, 2009 and I will again be taking the reins of the Carolina Pines. I had toyed with the idea of contracting some teams (KC, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Nashville, New Mexico, San Diego, and/or Washington). Things have changed in recent years, I decided that any team with a Championship wouldn't be considered for contraction. Well, I was going to at least relocate KC to St Louis, but in 2008 they won their first title. The Miami Pirates won their first title since the 1940's a year before so that excludes them as well. The New Mexico Diablos finally made the playoffs (as a Wild Card team) in 2007 and the Washington Senators played for the USBL Championship a few years back. The problem is that if I am going to reduce the number of teams, there has to be an even number in both leagues, so 4 have to go unless I want unbalanced leagues, which I don't.

So with KC out of the picture, here's a quick look at the remaining teams up for contraction:
Milwaukee Brewers: 4,868-5,500 8 Playoffs (last in 2007)
Minnesota Twins: 4,782-5,586 7 Playoffs (last in 2008, 1 championship, but it was in '52)
Nashville Sounds: 4,551-5,817 2 Playoffs (last in 1947!!!)
New Mexico Diablos: 4,693-5,675 1 Playoff (2006)
San Diego Clippers: 4,626-5,743 2 Playoffs (last in 1954)
Washington Senators: 4,571-5,797 4 Playoff (last in 2006)

Just something to think about while I'm getting ready for the 2009 season. The only problem is realignment, the teams in Nashville and Washington are in the same division (UL East), San Diego is in the UL West, and New Mexico is in the FL West. So I would need to move some teams around. Hmm....

I am almost afraid to mention that the Pines have the highest payroll in the USBL, coming in at a whopping $144,274,260, almost $3 million more than the next highest team, the Phoenix Sun Devils. The owner's philosophy is Win Now and he has given me the tools to do so. The Pines struggled to a 75-87 mark last year coming in 3rd in the division, they last played for the USBL title in 1999 when they were swept by Boston. Since then they've made only 2 trips to the post-season, both times losing in the opening round. Out of the top 25 players in the league, the Pines have 3 of them, all in the outfield:
Tomas Guzman #4 ($27,710,000 / yr)
Jacob Kelly #15 ($19,510,000 / yr)
George Willis #16 ($19,280,000 / yr)

I know that some of you will think this is a lame way to start a dynasty with such a strong team, but it was always my intention of taking over the Carolina Pines (given that I live in NC) and that's what I decided to do. Given my past history with teams, chances are it's going to be rough going. Not all the players on my roster are spring chickens and according to OOTP my farm system ranks 20th out of 32 teams, so if this season begins to fall apart you can rest assured that I will unloading some big $$ contracts and loading up on prospects. My pitching staff leaves something to be desired as does my middle infield, but hopefully I can outscore opponents with my outfield and hold on with my bullpen, see you soon!

Just a quick note before we begin the regular season, I had a pitcher come off the DL and had to be placed on the Active Roster, I didn't need him in the big leagues at the moment and I wanted to send him down to AAA Columbia, the league wouldn't allow that to happen so I shopped him around and found a taker.

CAROLINA sends 26 yr old MR Malcolm Pennington to LAS VEGAS for 27 yr old SP Jerry Peterson

Pennington was picked up in last year's Rule 5 draft and had just come back from Tommy John surgery. In Peterson I get a solid SP (9/13/8) who immediately is my #1 starter in AAA and could join the rotation should anyone falter in the early going.

Before the start of today's game, Nashville Sounds fans lined the streets leading up to the Stadium at Music Row in support of their team because hours earlier the commissioner of the USBL announced that the team will relocate to Tampa, Florida for the 2010 season pending a stadium deal with the city of Tampa and once a nickname search has been conducted. Also, during the press conference to announce the relocation of the Sounds to Tampa, the commissioner also announced that the New Mexico Diablos are moving to St Louis and the division will be realigned with St Louis playing in the Central and Dallas moving to the West Division. All of this is pending the USBL Board of Owner approval, but a source close to the proceedings stated that the Sounds move is "imminent," but "not to start packing the Diablos' stadium just yet." Let's Play Ball!!

Jeffrey Rose hits the first homer of the year for the Pines, a 3-run blast, to give Carolina a 3-0 lead in the top of the 4th, but the Sounds answer back with two 2-run homers in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Neil Hardin put the Pines ahead in the 6th with a 2-run blast of his own, the Pines would tack on 2 more and that would be the difference in this one. Word got around fast about the Sounds' "imminent" move to Tampa and the fans came out in support of their team as 32,212 fans packed the Stadium at Music Row, a near sell-out, but is it too little too late?

Neil Hardin homered for the second game in a row to give the Pines an early 1-0 lead, but Francisco Martinez and the Sounds were too much in this one. Martinez blasted a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 4th inning and then Ramon Ramos added a solo blast on the very next pitch. The Pines did take a lead late, but the Sounds answered back and 24,845 fans got to watch some free baseball. In the end a 1-out walk to Ramos in the 11th spelled doom for Carolina as the very next batter, Greg Robinson doubled to left and that scored the winning run for the Sounds.

Neil Hardin's hot hitting continued in the finale in Nashville as he belted a homer for the third straight game in the Pines 4-2 win over the Sounds. Hardin's homer in the top of the 9th sealed the win, but it was Jacob Kelly's first inning lead off homer that set the tone. On the first pitch of the game, Kelly hit a Roberto Carmona pitch 425 feet to right field to put the Pines up 1-0. Carolina heads home to RJ Reynolds Memorial Coliseum for a 3-game set against the Cincinnati Redbirds, stay tuned!

I actually rather like starting out with an established team. May not be quite as exciting but its more rare then starting out with a weak team and turning them around in the sports cliche sense.

Anyway, the big news in this one was Neil Hardin homering for the 4th straight game. Cincinnati's Yen-ti Lung hit 2 jacks for the Redbirds, but it wasn't enough as the Pines scored a run in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off win.

The bats were on fire in this one, both teams combined for 18 runs and 30 hits, and this one wasn't decided until the late innings. The big news is that Neil Hardin homered AGAIN for the Pines, that makes 5 homers in 5 games for the Carolina 3B. The score was tied at 5 as the Redbirds came to bat in the top of the eighth inning, but after 4 singles the Redbirds had plated 3 runs to take an 8-5 lead. Not to be outdone, the Pines scored 5 in the bottom of the inning, capped off by Tomas Guzman's 2-run double. When the dust cleared the scoreboard showed another W for the Pines as they come back to win this one 10-8.

For the sixth straight game Carolina Pines 3rd Baseman, Neil Hardin hit a home run, this time it was a 3-run shot in the bottom of the first that put the Pines ahead and they never looked back. Keith Wallace added his 1st homer of the season, a solo shot, in the 5th inning and that's all Don Harrell needed to pick up his 2nd win as the Pines improve to 5-1. There is nothing worse than when the bats go cold. After a torrid start it was bound to happen, but I was hoping it would be later in the season. After 6 straight games hitting one out of the park, Neil Hardin went homerless in this one, but did manage to drive in the Pines' only run on an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th. Carlos Duarte belted a solo shot in the 4th and Sean Wade added a 2-run single in the 8th to help the Outlaws outlast Carolina.

There's nothing a manger hates more or an antacid company loves more than late inning nailbiters. With the Outlaws up 3-1 going into the 7th it looked like 2 in a row for the team from Vegas, but George Willis had other ideas. He took a Matthew Nelson changeup and deposited it 463 feet into left field in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game and then, not to be outdone, Keith Wallace hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot, in the bottom of the 8th to break the tie and put the Pines ahead for good.

Well I stole one late yesterday so it's only fair that they get one today. This was a homer fest, albeit solo shots, early on. George Willis went deep twice for the Pines and Edgardo Ortega and Davey Morrow each added solo shots to put Carolina up 5-3. I turned the ball over to Cesar Mejia, my early season favorite for set-up man, and he didn't fare too well. He lasted only 2/3's of an inning giving up 3 runs on 4 hits before being yanked. Well that was enough to deflate the spirits of Carolina and we ended up losing the game and the series. Yuck.

We now head west to sunny San Diego for a quick 3-game road trip against the Clippers and then it's our first day off of the young season before we take on the Senators. Stay tuned...

You ever had one of those games where you were on the fence about leaving your starter in the game or taking him out. Trust me, go with your first instinct on that one. I was going to take out my starter Richards in the bottom of the 7th, but I saw that he was well under 100 pitches and had only given up 3 hits to that point. Big mistake, he ends up giving up 3 runs, including a 2-run pinch hit homer by Marvin Moore and next thing you know we're tied and going to extras. You can see the boxscore so you know that we ended up losing the game. Crap.

Another one of "those games," the bats were actually starting to heat up in this one, it wasn't exactly a pitcher's duel, but the offense was starting to work. Tomas Guzman, the Pines' 100 million dollar man, finally hit his first homer of the season, but it was the Clipper's 5-run 7th inning that sunk us. Dave Slattery came on in relief and didn't last an inning giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits, now we head back home at .500 (6-6) and in desperate need of a win.

This team has so many overpriced players that aren't producing I feel like a weird amalgam of Omar Minaya 2009 and Brian Cashman 2008. The problems started when the opposing pitcher hit a 2-run single when the bases were loaded in the top of the 2nd, after that we were just chasing our tails. And as if that weren't enough, we lose Neil Hardin for 5 weeks. Hardin slid hard into second to break up a double play in the 6th inning and ended up colliding with the 2B. Fun, fun, fun!

The Pines pounded out 21 hits, including 6 homers, in this absolute drumming of the Miners, and I couldn't be happier. I was about to throw in the towel. Not really, but I was getting really worried. I was very impressed with Don Harrell's pitching performance as he improved his record to 3-0, let's see if we can keep this up!!

Nevermind. I think what this team needs is some decent pitching. I have the offense, but my pitching is so Jekyll & Hyde that it makes me pull my hair out sometimes. I say that I have the offense, we only managed 5 hits in this embarassment. Why is that I don't have a choice in the game to swing or not on a 3-0 count. I see that it's 3-0 in the top of the 9th with 2 outs, normally any manager would want his guy to take a pitch and hopefully get on base and bring the tying run to the plate, but it was 3-0 and my guy hits a little bloop right at the shortstop, frustrating.

Better. But still a nail-biting pitching performance early on. Being down 3-1 is usually the deathknell for this team, but they woke up the bats and really took it to the Miners. Bill Willis, who is filing in for the injured Neil Hardin, really helped our cause today knocking in 4 runs.

We now head back home to take on division rival Philadelphia. The Freedom are currently in second place in the division with a 10-8 record. The Pines are tied for 4th, 5 games back at 8-10. Surprisingly enough, the Nashville Sounds have heard the rally cry of their fans who don't want that team to leave town and they are tied with San Francisco for the best overall record in the USBL at 13-5, should be a fun summer!

It's a nice switch when the big innings are happening when I'm at bat now. A HUGE first inning really put the Freedom behind and they never could catch up. Tomas Guzman's hefty contract is finally looking like it was worth it, he has really started to hit the ball well. I moved him up to 3rd in the lineup a few series' ago and it's really paid off.

This was one of the craziest games that I've ever played in OOTP. Philadelphia's starter Bill Ramey, who ended up getting a no decision, was throwing a perfect game through 7. In fact I think he'd only thrown about 54 pitches up to that point. I've never been no-hit and this was getting a little scary. Anyway, it's 4-0 Freedom when George Willis breaks up the perfect game in the bottom of the 8th with a single to right. He ends up scoring later in the inning so at least put the Pines on the board. The Freedom bring in their closer Wendell DeLaTour to close out the game, but it didn't end up the way he planned. Davey Morrow won the game in the bottom of the 9th with a 2-run single off of DeLaTour. Going from being the victim of a perfect game to winning on a walk off hit in 2 innings is quite a roller coaster ride, but I love it!!

I gave the ball to Don Harrell today and he didn't disappoint. Harrell threw a complete game, earning Player of the Game honors, and improving his record to 4-0. He has emerged as the ace of the staff, even though we're only in April. Tomas Guzman's hit another HR in this one to continue his torrid power surge.

It's back on the road again as we head to Oklahoma City for 3 against the Redhawks. Stay tuned...

Two more longballs from Tomas Guzman in this one and although the pitchers gave up 9 runs, we got the win. That won't always be the case because we won't always score 14 runs in a game. Although this season there seems to be a lot of high scoring games. Seth Garrett didn't get the start in this one, he came on the 5th inning in relief of Joe Brock who'd given up 7 runs in 4 innings. This will be very taxing on the bullpen if it keeps up.

What did I say about the bullpen in the previous post? Yikes, 10 of the 15 runs in this game came after the 6th inning, not good. Those myriad of runs included 2 given up in the bottom of the 9th by Jeff Keys after the Pines had taken the lead with 3 in the top of the inning. The difference in this one was a solo shot by Jeffrey Rose in the top of the 10th that gave Carolina the win.

Scary, scary numbers. In total this series saw the Pines score 36 runs on 46 hits to the Red Hawks 27 runs on 39 hits. That is waaaaay too much offense. A 5-0 lead should be safe, but not with these settings. I am going to have to take a look at the numbers and see if I need to make some adjustments going forward. I can't have 10 guys on my team with 30+ homers, that's insane.

You can see that the San Francisco Bays lead the charge with a 21-7 mark, and they come to play us next!! The surprising Nashville Sounds have put up the 2nd best mark in the league to date and with their attendance turning around they have prompted the commissioner to take notice and reconsider his relocating them to Tampa. He has promised a decision on that and other things during his press conference before the All-Star Game.

The Carolina Pines - Pitching

Snapshot of the Pines' pitching staff to date, you can see that Don Harrell is the ace, for sure now after his no-no. And to amplify that point he was named the United League's Pitcher of the Month for April, congratulations Don!!

The Carolina Pines - Batting

The numbers are getting better and better as the weather in the Old North State heats up. George Willis leads the charge with 11 longballs, but he's not the only one with pop.
