USBL - The Carolina Pines - A Fictional League
One of the best aspects for the OOTP series is the ability to create fictional baseball universes and watch them unfold based on the parameters that you set forth. As many of you are aware there is a treasure trove of logos, facepacks, stadiums, and other add-ons to totally customize your OOTP experience. Well that’s what I did. After several failed MLB dynasties and some other fictional ones that never seemed to give me the end result that I wanted, I think I’ve found one that will give me (an hopefully you) some enjoyment in watching how it plays out. The first few posts may be wordy, but that’s only because I’m trying to figure out the best way to report what’s happening with the league and my team without boring you too much, but still with enough information to follow along.
The league is called the United States Baseball League (USBL) and it features 32 teams in 2 leagues broken down into 3 divisions with between 5 and 6 teams per division. Here is a snapshot of the league: Code:
UNITED LEAGUE FEDERAL LEAGUE East Division East Division Carolina Pines Atlanta Peaches Memphis Blues Boston Minutemen Nashville Sounds Miami Pirates New York Skylines Pittsburgh Steelhounds Philadelphia Freedom Virginia Generals Washington Senators Central Division Central Division Cleveland Cavaliers Chicago Blackhawks Dallas Cowboys Cincinnati Redbirds Detroit Tigers Houston Astros Milwaukee Brewers Kansas City Royals Minnesota Twins Oklahoma City Red Hawks New Orleans VooDoo West Division West Division Las Vegas Outlaws Denver Broncos Salt Lake City Miners Los Angeles Titans San Diego Clippers New Mexico Diablos San Francisco Bays Phoenix Sun Devils Seattle Mariners Portland Lumberjax I created the league back in 1945 and simmed 50 years to get some history and took over the Carolina Pines in 1995. I use a balanced schedule with no inter-league play and the playoffs follow those of the real life MLB post-season with Wild Card and Division Winners qualifying. There are also 3 levels of minor leagues (AAA, AA, and A), the leagues are: AAA – Illinois Central Baseball League American Cotton League AA – California League Texas League Can-Am Steel League A – Colonial League American Association As the days progress and I get things ready for the ’95 season I will begin to post a ‘capsule’ of each team that details their history, overall record, championships, affiliates, and any other relevant data.

As you can see from above, I didn't get all that creative with some of the team names. Truth be told I really liked the Cavaliers logo that I found and I use the Cowboys 'Star' as their logo as for some of the minor league teams listed below I also borrowed from the NHL and other sports and even some old school minor league teams. Anyway, please be patient with me on this, I want to make this fun for me to play as well as fun for you to read, take care!

The Carolina Pines did win their division last year, but have never won a USBL title, let's hope that I can change all that!!

Please ignore the previous post about the 1995 season. Well, let me explain why. As I said earlier I think one of the best aspects of OOTP is the ability to create your own universe and customize and watch teams and players grow and blossom. I have always tried to do historical MLB dynasties and I always end up with a team of All-Stars because I'll go out and trade for big names. That's not the right way to do it. Because in a Braves dynasty I had, while I had what equated to a 2005 NL All-Star team on my roster, a guy named Kit Pellow won the NL MVP Award, because his ratings were better than pretty much everyone on my team. When we was placed on waivers in Spring Training I didn't pay any attention to him because he's not a 'big name,' and it turns out he was the best player in the league. I tend to look at the name not the ratings, that's why I am focusing on fictional leagues right now, it will force me to look at ratings and all the other things that go into a player other than a big name. I have a Cooperstown dynasty going as well, but that's different because there aren't any transactions in that one. Long story long, I don't know why I chose 1995 to start, I guess it was because I got tired of waiting for my CPU to sim to present day, but last night I decided to stop what I was doing and fast forward to 2009. So that's what I did, it is currently January 1, 2009 and I will again be taking the reins of the Carolina Pines. I had toyed with the idea of contracting some teams (KC, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Nashville, New Mexico, San Diego, and/or Washington). Things have changed in recent years, I decided that any team with a Championship wouldn't be considered for contraction. Well, I was going to at least relocate KC to St Louis, but in 2008 they won their first title. The Miami Pirates won their first title since the 1940's a year before so that excludes them as well. The New Mexico Diablos finally made the playoffs (as a Wild Card team) in 2007 and the Washington Senators played for the USBL Championship a few years back. The problem is that if I am going to reduce the number of teams, there has to be an even number in both leagues, so 4 have to go unless I want unbalanced leagues, which I don't.
So with KC out of the picture, here's a quick look at the remaining teams up for contraction: Milwaukee Brewers: 4,868-5,500 8 Playoffs (last in 2007) Minnesota Twins: 4,782-5,586 7 Playoffs (last in 2008, 1 championship, but it was in '52) Nashville Sounds: 4,551-5,817 2 Playoffs (last in 1947!!!) New Mexico Diablos: 4,693-5,675 1 Playoff (2006) San Diego Clippers: 4,626-5,743 2 Playoffs (last in 1954) Washington Senators: 4,571-5,797 4 Playoff (last in 2006) Just something to think about while I'm getting ready for the 2009 season. The only problem is realignment, the teams in Nashville and Washington are in the same division (UL East), San Diego is in the UL West, and New Mexico is in the FL West. So I would need to move some teams around. Hmm....

Given my past history with teams, chances are it's going to be rough going. Not all the players on my roster are spring chickens and according to OOTP my farm system ranks 20th out of 32 teams, so if this season begins to fall apart you can rest assured that I will unloading some big $$ contracts and loading up on prospects. My pitching staff leaves something to be desired as does my middle infield, but hopefully I can outscore opponents with my outfield and hold on with my bullpen, see you soon!

![]() Just a quick note before we begin the regular season, I had a pitcher come off the DL and had to be placed on the Active Roster, I didn't need him in the big leagues at the moment and I wanted to send him down to AAA Columbia, the league wouldn't allow that to happen so I shopped him around and found a taker. CAROLINA sends 26 yr old MR Malcolm Pennington to LAS VEGAS for 27 yr old SP Jerry Peterson Pennington was picked up in last year's Rule 5 draft and had just come back from Tommy John surgery. In Peterson I get a solid SP (9/13/8) who immediately is my #1 starter in AAA and could join the rotation should anyone falter in the early going.

CAROLINA PINES (0-0) at NASHVILLE SOUNDS (0-0) ![]() Before the start of today's game, Nashville Sounds fans lined the streets leading up to the Stadium at Music Row in support of their team because hours earlier the commissioner of the USBL announced that the team will relocate to Tampa, Florida for the 2010 season pending a stadium deal with the city of Tampa and once a nickname search has been conducted. Also, during the press conference to announce the relocation of the Sounds to Tampa, the commissioner also announced that the New Mexico Diablos are moving to St Louis and the division will be realigned with St Louis playing in the Central and Dallas moving to the West Division. All of this is pending the USBL Board of Owner approval, but a source close to the proceedings stated that the Sounds move is "imminent," but "not to start packing the Diablos' stadium just yet." I actually rather like starting out with an established team. May not be quite as exciting but its more rare then starting out with a weak team and turning them around in the sports cliche sense.

The Freedom are currently in second place in the division with a 10-8 record. The Pines are tied for 4th, 5 games back at 8-10. Surprisingly enough, the Nashville Sounds have heard the rally cry of their fans who don't want that team to leave town and they are tied with San Francisco for the best overall record in the USBL at 13-5, should be a fun summer!

USBL Summary - April 2009
As we turn the pages from April to May let's take a look back at the USBL after a month on the field:
