San Antonio Express News
1/7/1998 The NABL initial draft was held last night. It was comprised mostly of former college and high school players along with some independent and minor league free agents. MLB free agents will have a chance to sign with a NABL team starting in March. The top players taken by our own San Antonio Missions are as follows. 1st pick overall- 2B-Dustin Mcgowan Dustin is a 26 yo hard hitting second baseman. He played college ball at North Carolina before being drafted in the 3rd round of the 1993 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Dustin showed great power potential in the lower minor leagues, but stalled out at AA. He impressed Missions' scouts with an amazing hitting display during workouts. 17th pick overall- SP-John Smith Smith is a 21 yo right hander, formerly of the independent league. Smith was a solid star in high school and was recruited by major schools, including usc, texas and fresno state. John was drafter in the 6th round of the 1996 draft by the New York Yankees. He was released after only pitching 2 games in 2 minor league seasons due to arm troubles. 33rd pick overall- CF- James Darr Darr is a 25 yo left handed hitter with blazing speed. He also has a very good eye. Darr was drafted out of high school by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1991 draft. He led all of AA in stolen bases three times, but never could get his average to a respectable level. 49th pick overall- C- George Lavine George is a 28 yo offensive catcher. He doesnt call games well and has trouble making throws. But he makes up for it with his plate discipline and high average ability. George was expected to be the catcher of the future when selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 1st round of the 1990 MLB draft, but he never panned out. George made it to AAA twice in his career, but never could break in with the big club. |
