BZ 222: Improper home-field advantage in custom playoffs with seeding...

There is an error I'm finding in regards to playoffs when you seed 8 or more teams. When certain circumstances occur, the wrong team will always get home field advantage in the playoffs.

I found this initially in a 40-team fictional league (split into 2 20-team leagues) with a 16-team playoff (8 teams per league). When I noticed this error had a pattern, I developed a 16-team single-division league in an attempt to replicate it on a smaller scale.

Here's the pattern, and I'll use an eight-seeded playoff as an example.
Take two matchups, in this example seed 1 v. seed 8 and seed 4 v. seed 5, where the winners will end up playing each other in the next round. There are four possible outcomes for the two matchups:

Seed 1 versus Seed 4
Seed 1 versus Seed 5
Seed 8 versus Seed 4
Seed 8 versus Seed 5

If the matchup in the second round is seed 8 versus seed 4, OOTP10 always gives home-field to the 8th seed. Otherwise, home-field is given to the 1st seed if it wins in either case and to the 5th seed if both upsets occur.

This pattern also shows up for matchups between seed 3 v. seed 6 and seed 2 v. seed 7 (if you keep those matchups in the default order for seeding, at least). If the 6th seed wins its matchup and the 2nd seed wins its matchup, the 6th seed gets home-field in the second round.

I tested with four-team seeded playoffs in the single-division and when a comparable situation occured (4th seed beating 1st seed and 2nd seed beating 3rd seed), the 2nd seed recieved home-field. So the error did not occur in that instance. Only when there were eight or more seeds did the problem manifest itself.

Does this make sense? This was a little difficult for me to put the words to explain it all, but I tried my best.

Thanks in advance for reading this. If Tech Support needs files, I have saved two league files during the playoffs when these errors have occurred, one is the single-team league, the other is the initial league I first really paid attention to this error (this file has a Major League with 3 Minor Leagues; coincidentally, I think all four leagues in that one have at least one occurance of the incorrect home-field advantage.) Let me know which you'd prefer.

Anyway, that's all. Thanks for reading and I hope I'm not the only one who's noticing this.

This has been reported. I'll dig up the old BZ number.
