automatically control in-game engine to match league totals...

...(only recommended for minors)

Can we get some comments on this new feature from those in the know?

It was one of the first things I noticed when I imported my v9 league and got ready to run a test season to check how my league totals worked from MLB down to rookie league.

My minor league totals from v9 (which were set after a few test seasons) gave realistic results and converted well to v10. My question is with this new feature can I just check the box for my minor leagues and not have to check league stats after each season and get good results?

Should I reset all of my minor league modifiers to 1.000 if I use this feature? Or can I leave them as is since the game will manipulate the engine to achieve the correct league totals?

How does this game engine manipulation influence the reliability of the stats I'm seeing from my minor leaguers? I assume since all players are influenced that everything becomes relative? IE while HR production may be trimmed or increased you will look at how a player did relative to the league to try to figure out if he will develop into a power hitter? etc.

Sorry no one has responded yet, so I'll do the best that I can. AFAIK, this feature wasn't really investigated much during the Beta. I think the reason is that Markus had indicated there would be distinct and historically accurate league totals for each minor league. In that event, this feature would have made it possible to get better minor league stats, without Markus having to program a separate League Total Modifier system for each league. This is entirely my interpretation, so regard it cautiously.

However, so far there are no distinct league totals for the minor leagues. So, in my mind, that option is sort of a placeholder for the future (how far off is anyone's guess).

If I am wrong about any of this, I hope my going out on a limb here will inspire someone more knowledgeable to jump in, because it is a very good question to ask.

The main thing that needed doing with league totals is removing league BABIP from the AB/HR/K/H values. If that's done, then at least they stand a chance of working in the lower levels.

When you select this check box, the game will automatically make an adjustment to your league totals after each season, so that the results of the next season will be statistically close to the real-world historical ratio of that season. So, if your league overall hit .250 in 1980, and the real world league batting average for 1981 was .275, the game will automatically adjust your Hits league totals modifier to 1.100, because you need to get hits 10% more often than this past season to approximately match the real world values.
I found that in the manual earlier today OOTP Baseball Manual - Strategy & Equivalencies Page

Different checkbox. The one you quoted has been there all along. There is a new checkbox in OOTP10, which is what the OP refers to.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully someone (maybe Markus) will see and reply.
In v9 and before I ran test leagues and set my own league modifiers that lead to believable results. These seemed to hold up pretty well running my first test league in v10. I don't really care if I get them as accurate as my MLB modifiers, just reasonable results.

I did check the online manual and, as far as I can tell, there is no mention of this new feature. I did check the box (figuring I'd get an answer here on what it does do)though for my minors assuming\hoping that it would mean not having to check these out after each season and would lead to realistic numbers.

My concern was that by manipulating the engine the game would look to create the right number of HR's, K's, etc. to comply with the desired setting. In doing so it would create the illusion of a blossoming power hitter or dominating pitcher where one really didn't exist. My expectation though is it would be designed to work relative to the player ratings? IE the home run leader, whether the numbers were slightly inflated or deflated, would in fact be a guy that was probably going to grow into his power potential?

If it is something that hasn't been tested, explained in the manual, or is known to work properly maybe the check-box shouldn't be usable?

Anyway I've only played one ST game and can always turn it off it no answer is forthcoming before my ML seasons get under way.

Thanks again SteveP for you input.

I'm really curious about this setting as well and all that it affects. From what it sounds like it could keep minor league stats from going too extreme in any direction.

What the heck. I'll go out on a limb again, because there have been some new developments in the patches.

I believe that this option is designed to work best (and, in fact, may be absolutely necessary) when the minor leagues have their own tailored League Totals (not the League Total Modifiers (LTM), but the League Totals). You get these tailored League Totals now with the 2009 MLB game. I understand you will also get them if you start a Standard League based on the MLB.

In essence, the option pre-empts the normal LTM calculation process, as it applies to the minor leagues (which used to get the exact same LTMs as the major league). Instead, the game engine will strive to match the minor league League Totals (hits, HRs, Ks, etc) by the end of the season -- which should produce reasonable stats for those items.

It has been said that this option also works well with fictional leagues, but I don't know the basis for that, so can't verify it.

I don't believe it should be used for historicals (real or fictional) because they will not have tailored minor league League Totals -- unless you have manually edited the LTs yourself.

I hope that's reasonably accurate and reasonably clear.

That is very clear and that's how I'm interpreting it as well. The MLB Quickstart and the MAL standard league both have the same League Totals. However, the MLB Quickstart has this checkbox checked by default and the MAL Standard doesn't.
