THRILLER IN MANILA by John Dower
Thriller in Manila | Sundance Festival 2009
I just watched a short piece about this documentary on BBC news. It debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and I was wondering if anyone has seen it. I will be looking for a way to find the film as soon as my schedule frees up but I was curious to hear thoughts from someone who might have watched it.

When does the fiscal year end in the USA? Over here in Australia it runs from July 1 to June 30, so the busiest time of the year for me is early July.

Pretty much the same here, but there is the IRS deadline of April 15th for filing income tax returns.

In the U.S. individuals have to file on a calendar year basis with returns due April 15.
Corporate calendar year entities have a March 15 deadline, partnerships share the individual deadline and non-profit entities have a May 15 deadline. Entities (those that are not flow throughs) can select a fiscal year end to report on; common year-ends are March 31, June 30 and September 30 but anything is ok if it fits a given industry business cycle. I have one October year-end client. Governmental entities mostly have June 30 year ends and many non-profits that receive government funding select that year end as well to match grant periods.

Since we've had so many of these guys in office I don't remember which one. There was one secretary of state that insisted that all checks sent to the secretary of state's office be made out to His own name, Secretary of State of Illinois The people who just wrote out checks to His own name while omitting his title were just handing him the cash. bear

It was great, choked me up big time, though I was heavily under the influence of my beloved alcohol. I grew up an Ali fan, but the years have totally changed my stance and I am 100% Frazier now.
It's real easy for people to say Joe should forgive him. But that was some despicable stuff. Muhammad gets a pass for too much of his behavior because of his brilliance in the ring and his status in other channels outside of it. He should have had more respect for his greatest rival who beat him when they were both closest to their best. The whole promoting the fight excuse is just that. None of those fights needed Ali degrading Joe Frazier to sell tickets. He did it to be cruel and for no other reason. In a lot of ways I think muhammad was jealous of Joe.

Joe's been down a hard road all these years. I think his attitude towards Ali is much better now than it has been over the last 30+ years, though. He seems to have more fans and more people taking notice of his accomplishments now, than let's say - ten years ago.
He had the misfortune of running into George Foreman which derailed his run at the top. The Frazier who beat Ali in the fight of the century, though, would match up well against many other of the top Heavyweights. And he only weighed around 200-205 pounds for that fight!

Joe is a rough night for any Heavyweight. Even Foreman's hands had to hurt something fierce.
Imo, he won more rds than Ali did during the trilogy. Muhammad deserves the higher placement. But if they fought 10 times, it's 5 a piece.

Ali was also anti-establishment which over the course of time has become a very popular view with people of all ages, colors, beliefs, etc. I guess you could say his popularity grew exponentially right along with society’s anti-establishment, anti-governmental views. Did I say that right??
It became more than boxing. Ali backed right into a role without even realizing the depth of it and became a political icon through the years that followed. That type of “hero worship” carried over and colored some people’s perception of him as a fighter in the ring, believing him to be unbeatable at his best. Today, most people believe what Ali believed back then. That rich powerful people with an agenda have no problem exploiting the poor! And he’s celebrated by many for it. Joe on the other hand, is seen as an ex-fighter. Period. Today, though, the balance is shifting back and people are starting to appreciate Joe in a new light. And to think it only took about 40 years? ![]()
