Brink of Destruction: The Last Chance for The Montreal Expos

December 12, 2002

It was an average December day in Montreal. Very chilly, that is. The small crowd that gathered around Stade Olympique looked like they were about encased in ice. "It's a done deal", said MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, who then had the phrase translated to french for my PR man and Brother, Jean Blanchette. I was pleased, but was hesitant to say so. I had just pretty much sold my soul to the MLB, who were also hesitant to say so. After plans to contract the Expos and Twins went down the drain, i knew they wanted the Expos out of Montreal.

Let me introduce myself, I am Charles Blanchette, a 38 year old oil tycoon and Montreal Expos diehard. After hearing of the Expos Traitor Jeffrey Loria selling the team to the MLB, i knew i needed to step in.

After sending Jean to announce the deal, I waited at the door to introduce myself. Selig walked by and looked at me like he's watching me. According to the deal i signed, he had every right to. Basically, i had ten years to rebuild the team or it's so long Expos. The extra clauses he threw in made me almost turn away, but i didn't give up. I walked out the door and was surprised to see so many people gathering around the stadium. And it wasn't just Canadians. There were about 500 Americans too. All in all, i estimated at least 3500 people showed up.

I walked up to the Stage and was announced to the Public. The half-empty stadium gave me a standing ovation. Then, the once grumpy Bud Selig walked up and wished me the best of luck. I knew i needed all i could get.

Ok, so the Contract Clauses as mentioned earlier to keep the Expos in Montreal are as follows:

I must play at least 30 games (50 if bolded) in the following cities to gauge interest in case i fail my mission:

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Washington D.C.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Monterrey, Mexico
Portland, Oregon
Norfolk, Virginia
Newark, New Jersey
Charlotte, North Carolina
A City to be Announced Later
A City to be Announced Later

In order to keep the Expos in Montreal, I must do two of the following:

Finish in 2nd in the division 5 times
Win the Wildcard 4 times
Win the Division 3 times
Advance to the 2 World Series
Win the World Series 1 time

I'll have my work cut out for me.
