Former boxing champ Billy Thompson dies

HICKLETON'S former British and European lightweight boxing champion Billy Thompson has passed away at the age of 83.
Mr Thompson died at the Flower Park Residential Home in Denaby Main on Sunday.

One of Britain's finest boxers during the 1940s and 50s, Mr Thompson held the British title from October 1947 to August 1951 and was also the European champion for almost two years.

He fought numerous times in the Royal Albert Hall as well as Anfield and Parkhead stadiums.

His funeral will take place on Wednesday, January 14, beginning with a service at St Helen's Church in Thurnscoe at 1.30pm followed by cremation at Ardsley.

His family are to display his Lonsdale Belt - which he was allowed to keep following two successful defences of his British title - on the coffin.
