Here're the results from the first batch of fights from round 1a of the tourney:
Tadashi Tomori turned in a lackluster performance in earning a 95-94 94-95 96-94 split decision over Tito Abella. Tomori scored a knockdown in the 6th that turned out to be the difference maker as Abella worked Tomori for the bulk of the fight. Tomori came in a 5-1 favorite. Agustin Garcia earned a unanimous decision over Alfredo Toro in a match that had no knockdowns. Garcia simply outworked his opponent to earn the decision 97-92 98-92 97-93. Ramon Horacio Albers earned a 5 DQ over German Torres in our first upset of this young tourney. Albers went down in the 2nd, and was behind 39-36 38-37 39-36 at the time of the DQ. Torres had been warned in the 2nd about low blows, and Mercante deemed that the low blow in the 5th was intentional! Torres came in a 6-1 favorite to make it to the next round. Lorenzo Trejo earns a 15 UD over Santos Aragon 143-144 142-143 142- 145. This sleeper was a draw after the scheduled 10, and the crowd groaned at the prospect of 5 more rounds! Jose Badilla used a knockdown in the 9th round as an exclaimation mark to his 96-93 95-94 96-93 decision over Franco Udella. Little Baguio earned a tough decision over Amado Ursua. in what was a close fight either way....Baguio went down in the 4th, and Ursua went down in the 8th in this brawl! |

Here are more results from round 1a of our tourney:
Fernando Baja KO'd Amado Ursua with a wicked hook in the 7th round. Baja led 58-56 58-56 60-54 at the time of the 10 count. Javier Varguez battered Udin Baharudin for 10 rounds, dropping him 2 times in the 8th enroute to a 98-90 96-92 97-91 unanimous decision. Roberto Vasquez went to war with Ronald Barrera and earned a 10 round unanimous decision on the strength of knockdowns in the 5th and 9th rounds. 95-93 98-91 97-91. This was one of the most entertaining fights in the short history of the IBA!! Gerardo Verde won a 10 Unanimous decision over a rough and tumble Bert Batawang the scores being 95-93 95-94 96-94. Verde scored knockdowns in the 6th and 8th rounds, yet Batawang kept fighting back to keep the fight close! Back 2 back slugfests!! Reinaldo Becerra wore down Flash Villacura before scoring a KO in the 8th round. The scores were 68-65 68-65 67-66 for Becerra after 7 rounds. Flash showed he was willing to rumble with Becerra, and that may have been his biggest mistake! Brian Viloria cruised to a 99-90 98-91 97-92 decision over Vincenzo Belcastro. Viloria dropped Belcastro once in the 9th round. |

Freddy Beleno escaped with a narrow 94-95 95-94 96-93 split decision against a tough Netrnoi Sor Vorasingh on the strength of a 7th round knockdown. Sor Vorasingh landed nearly 100 more punches than Beleno in this fight, but Beleno landed more power shots to secure the win!!
Rodolfo Blanco got up from a 1st round knockdown to score one of his own in the 7th to defeat a tough Paul Weir 95-93 94-94 95-93 majority decision. Shingo Yamaguchi scored a 97-93 95-95 97-93 majority decision over Flywell Botha to the serenade of snores from the audience. Myung-Woo Yuh used his slick boxing skills to pick apart Jose Victor Burgos enroute to a 99-91 99-91 99-91 decision. Yuh has little power, but his boxing skills were impressive, landing 361 punches to only 116 for Burgos! Hilario Zapata dominated Jorge Cano for 10 rounds winning the bout 98-92 98-92 100-91 Zapata outlanded Cano 448-160 but was unable to get a knockdown in this drubbing. Michael Carbajal scored knockdowns in the 4th and 5th rounds in a dominating knockout of Jose Zarate. All 3 judges had it 40-35 after 4 rounds, and Carbajal outlanded Zarate 190-18!! Siony Carupo knocked down Justo Zuniga in the 1st and again in a disasterous 8th that saw Zuniga also lose a point for hitting after the bell for the second time in the fight......Carupo escaped with a 94-93 94-93 93-94 split decision that saw Zuniga outbox Carupo for most of the fight! And that ends round 1a of the Jr. Flyweight tourney. I will post the 64 bouts that comprise round 1b in the morning! |

Early results from round 1b:
Tadashi Tomori defeated Sung-Jun Kim 97-95 97-94 97-95 to earn a 10 round decision. The fight started out fast with Kim pressing the action, but things turned into a dance fest towards the end. Muangchai Kittikasem dominated Ramon Horacio Albers in a 10 round decision that saw Albers flat on his back for a 9 count in the 8th. The scorecards were 99-90 99-90 98-91. Jun Kitano earned a tough 96-95 95-95 97-93 majority decision over Agustin Garcia Javier Lagos outclassed Lorenzo Trejo 98-94 97-94 98-93 to earn his way to the next round. Jose Badilla fought his heart out to earn a draw 95-95 94-96 96-95 against Jose Humberto Lagos. Unfortunately he ran out of gas, and Lagos took over in rounds 11-14, but then had to hold on to win the fight as Badilla mounted a furious attack in the 15th that had Lagos reeling throughout the round. The crowd called for the fight to be stopped, but Lagos survived to win 141- 144 140-145 142-144! Lagos came in a 9-1 favorite and was lucky to leave with his head intact! Little Baguio stunned everyone by scoring a 6 TKO on cuts! He opened a cut over Lazarte's right eye in the 2nd round, and Lazarte's cutman was unable to keep it closed as it reopened again in the 5th, and then again in the fatal 6th.....Lazarte came in a 7-2 favorite and was ahead 48-47 48-47 47-48 through 5 rounds.

More results from round 1b:
Fernando Baja stopped Luis Lazarte on cuts with 1:39 left in the 6th round. Baja lead on all 3 cards 48-47 through the 5th round. Lazarte was a 2-1 favorite to win this bout. Javier Varguez scored a knockout in the 8th round over a game Roberto Ledesma...Ledesma wend down in the 2nd as well, but was able to plant Varguez in the 4th. Roberto Vasquez stormed out at the opening bell throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Jose Luis Lopez forcing a TKO with 2 seconds left in the first round! Gerardo Verde wore down Pretty Boy Lucas to score a KO in the 10th. Lucas also went down in the 8th, and was behind 88-82 88-82 89-81 through the 9th round. Reinaldo Becerra dominated Agustin Luna, finally scoring a KO in the 10th round. Brian "Hawaiian Punch" Viloria roared back in the last 4 rounds to earn a tightly contested 95-94 96-93 94-95 split decision over tough Lupe Madera. Not much defense in this fight, as both men scored at will. Expect a rematch here!

Freddy Beleno outmuscled Jesus Martinez for a 10 round unanimous decision. Martinez hit the canvas 2 times in the 5th, and once in the 7th, but still gave Beleno a tough fight.
NObuaki Masuda landed a nasty cross to open a cut over Rodolfo Blanco's left eye to stop the bout only 1 minute into the first round...TKO for Masuda, a 2-1 underdog coming into this fight! Jake Matlala and Shingo Yamaguchi fought non-stop for 10 rounds, with Matlala being knocked down in the 10th. Somehow he survived to score a 95-94 94-95 96-94 split decision in a bout that could have gone either way! Each round was so close, and so full of action that the crowd was on their feet nearly the entire fight!.....Another bout that screams rematch! Both Jim Trunzo and I felt that the knockdown was enough to give the fight to Yamaguchi! Myung-Woo Yuh was content to use his superior boxing skills to earn a 10 round decision 99-91 100-90 99-91 over an over-matched Hector Melendez. Beibis Mendoza shocked Hilario Zapata with 3 knockdowns in the 7th round, the final one a 10 count with 20 seconds left in the round to score an upset KO! The cards were 57-57 56-58 Mendoza 57-57 through 6. This was a tough early draw for both fighters so early in the tournament! Zapata was favored 2-1 by the Las Vegas odds makers. Michael Carbajal didn't break a sweat in his 10 round drubbing of Jaime Miranda. Miranda was down 2 times in the 1st and again in the 9th but Carbajal couldn't put him away....score it a 10 round UD 99-88 99-88 99-88 for Carbajal! |

There have been some suprises so far in the tourney...let's see how the next batch plays out!
Jaime Miranda outpointed "Little Siony" Carupo in a spirited bout that had Miranda fighting with one eye near closed, Carupo with an cut over his left eye. Miranda finally dropped Carupo for an 8 count in the 10th round. The judges scored the bout 96-93 96-93 97-92. Hugo Fidel Cazares dominated Jhon Alberto Molina for the first 8 rounds, nearly closing Molina's eye before scoring 4 knockdowns, the final one a 10 count for a 9th round KO! The cards were 80-72 79-73 79-73 through 8. Nam-Hoon Cha scored a close 96-94 95-95 96-94 decision over Francisco Montiel. Jung-Koo Chang was too slick for the plodding Benedicto Murillo in his 10 round unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 97-94 98-92 99-93. Monelisi Mhikiza "Showtime" Myekeni destroyed Oscar Chausqui in 2 rounds scoring a TKO due to cuts over Chausqui's right eye and in his mouth. Hermogenes stunned Kaaj Chartbandit in the 4th round with a KO! Chartbandit was an 8-1 favorite coming into this fight! |

More results in from round 1b:
Shigeo Nakajima opened a cut over Jum-Hwan Choi's left eye in the second round, and reopened it to earn a 7th round TKO. This was a suprisingly good action fight with Nakajima ahead 58-56 58-57 58-56 through 6. Jesus Chong scored a knockdown in the 1st, Muvhuso Nedzanani scored a knockdown in the 3rd, then both fighters went back and forth in this war until Chong scored another knockdown in the 8th, then poured it on to force the referee to stop the bout TKO in the 8th for Chong! These 2 warriors both recieved a rousing ovation, and Chong promised Nedzanani a rematch sometime in the future, as Nedzanani had a 66-65 lead on all 3 cards in this war! James Njorage opened a nasty cut over the eye of Melchor Cob Castro in the 3rd, and reopened it several times in this fight, but it wasn't enough to stop Castro from defeating him 99-91 97-93 97-93 in an entertaining 10 round decision. Felix Colman earned a 10 majority decision 95-92 95-92 94-94 despite being dropped in the 7th round. Colman showed suprising power dropping Nkate in the 5th AND the 9th to win a close fight that could have gone either way. Nkate came in a 5-2 favorite in this bout!! Vuyani Nene dominated Roy Clave enroute to a 5th round KO. Joey Olivo kept constant pressure on Fredrico Condori to earn a 97-93 98-92 98-92 decision. Rafael Orozco wore down Ramon Jose Cufre finally ending the fight with a nasty combo at 1:17 in the 7th round for a KO. Eric Ortiz out boxed a game Jose DeJesus, finally scoring a knockdown in the 8th enroute to an 8 TKO.

Juan Palacios was cut over the left eye, cut in the mouth, and Mario DeMarco looked like he'd not been in a fight, but he couldn't withstand DeMarco's strength and speed, going down for an 8 count in the 8th, with Palacios winning in dominating fashion against a suprisingly game DeMarco 99-90 99-90 98-93.
Dexter Dhlamini outboxed Ruben Paniagua in what could be charitibly called a "tactical fight" 98-92 97-93 99-91. Paniagua only landed 9.9% of his 1603 punches thrown in the fight to set a new standard of ineptitude, even though he was favored 3-1 coming into this bout. Cho-Woon Park boxed smartly enroute to a 98-93 98-92 97-93 decision over Jose Luis Diaz. Nelson Dieppa scored a knockdown in the first round enroute to a 96-95 95-95 96-95 majority decision over a resilient Rolando Pascua, despite being cut over the left eye in the 9th. Personally I felt that Pascua did enough to win this fight! This one's a potential rematch folks! Isaac Diko survived a 10 round drubbing, but lost 99-91 98-92 99-91 to a sharp Dodie Boy Penalosa. Pillay Duiker won a narrow 96-95 (all 3 cards) unanimous decision in a bout that could have gone either way against Isidro Perez.....This one's a BIG upset as Perez was such a favorite that the oddsmakers took the fight off the board!!! Duiker used suprising speed and movement to outlast Perez, who thought he'd won the fight, and is demanding a rematch! |

Luis Estaba and Jaime Rios fought to a majority draw with Estaba 96-94 95-95 95-95.....Rios would have won this fight if it weren't for a ridiculous point deduction in the 2nd round for leading with the head, with no warnings. Estaba threw more than twice the punches, but they were pretty much even on punches landed in the fight through 10. The fight continued for the 5 round tiebreaker with the fight being 143-141 142-142 142-142 through 15, thanks to Rios being penalized again, this time for low blows (this one earned!) finally a 16th round was fought, with Rios winning the round handily on all 3 cards to win a 152-151 151-152 151-152 split decision in the longest fight in IBA history! Both men agreed that a rematch is in order!
Rodolfo Rodriguez defeated Carlos Fajardo in a 10 round battle royal this evening 97-93 96-94 96-94 that saw Rodriguez bleeding from a cut over the right eye most of the fight, and Fajardo's left eye nearly closed. Both fighters gave it their all, but Rodriguez was clearly the superior fighter when all was said and done. Chana Porpaoin dominated Michael Ebo Danquah through the first 9 rounds before planting Danquah on his back 2 times in the 10th to earn a 10th round TKO Porpaoin lead 89-81 89-81 87-83 through 9. Nerys Espinosa destroyed Francisco Quiroz with a wicked hook to score a 2 KO. Alli Galvez used movement and handspeed to outlast a suprising Ramon Rodriguez 96-94 95-94 96-94. The crowd boo'd the decision as most felt it was a draw at best! Alli came in a 7-2 favorite in this fight, and was lucky to escape with the win! Anis Roga earned a hard fought o Technical Decision through 8 rounds 78-74 78-74 77-75 over Agustin Garcia. Roga suffered a cut in the 5th round when both men accidentally clashed heads, and the cut worsened as the fight went on.

More results from round 1b:
Adrian Daniel Roman wore down a game Rodrigo Garcia to score a KO in the 7th round...all 3 judges had the bout 57-57 through the 6th round. Garcia came into this bout a 9-1 favorite! Luis Edmundo Gomez and Reynaldo Romero clashed heads accidentally in the 1st, Romero had a point deducted in the 3rd, then Gomez reopened the cut in the 5th forcing the bout to stop. Gomez was awarded a 4 round Technical Decision 40-36 40-36 40-36 to move to the second round! Rodrigo Garcia thoroughly drubbed Reynaldo Romero enroute to a 98-93 (x3) Unanimous Decision. Humberto Gonzales administered a thrashing to Fernando Sagredo so bad that Sagredo's corner tossed in the towel with a minute left in the 3rd round....score it a 3 TKO! Nungdiaw Sakcharuporn destroyed Ignacio Lindor Gorriti 99-87 98-88 98-89.....Gorriti took a terrible beating in the final 2 rounds, including 3 knockdowns in the 9th when the fight should have been stopped, and then another knockdown in the 10th. IBA officials announced they will be investigating the referee's competence in this bout. Fahlan Sakkreerin upset Will Grigsby by being the slicker boxer in this bout. Both fighters seemed content to stay away from one another and pot shot from the outside throughout the bout...Sakkreerin scored 96-94 97-94 97-94 in this lackluster bout. Grigsby came in a 2-1 favorite. Juanito Rubillar used his superior speed and movement to box circles around Roberto Gomez for a 10 round decision 99-92 98-93 99-92.

Alex Sanchez battered Alex Guevarra for a 8 TKO on cuts. Guevarra was down in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th, before the cut on his forehead forced the doctor to advise the fight be stopped. Give Guevarra credit, he kept getting up, but couldn't withstand the bull in the china shop that is Sanchez!
Yoko Gushiken knocked Lee Sandoval down in the 1st and 2nd rounds enroute to a dominating 3rd round TKO. Wandee Singwancha got back up from a 5th round knockdown surviving a beating to shock Juan Antonio Guzman with a 8th round KO! Guzman lead 68-64 on all 3 cards through 7 and seemed well on his way to winning the 8th round and the fight when Singwancha let go a devastating right uppercut! Singwancha, in a rare display of sportsmanship hugged Guzman and promised a rematch in this entertaining bout! Masato Hatakeyama and Ulises Solis fought one of those fights that're nearly impossible to score, with the score cards 95-95 93-97 96-96 at the end of 10 rounds...Solis was a 5-2 favorite coming in..Hatakeyama boxed smartly to nullify Soli's superior power...Solis came out smoking in the first 3 rounds of the overtime, Hatakeyama fought back the last 2, at the end of the 15 rounds it was 142-143 140-145 143-144, with Solis winning! Saman Sorjaturong battered, cut and bruised Tatsuo Hayashida before finally putting him to sleep with 2:25 to go in the 8th round...KO! Carlos Reyes Sosa survived a terrible beating, including a 5th round knockdown to open cuts over both of Manuel Jesus Herrera's eyes, scoring a shocking 7 TKO on cuts! Herrerra lead 59-54 on all 3 cards through 6 and came in a 9-1 favorite....man, what an upset! |

Here are the final bouts of round 1b:
Edgar Sosa danced for 10 rounds picking apart the ineffectual Jose Ibiris 100-90 97-93 99-91 in this sleepfest. Jose Rafael Sosa and Hiroki Ioka were even in the first 3 rounds that had little action when suddenly Sosa woke up and floored Ioka 3 times enroute to an impressive TKO inn the 4th! Andy Tabanas hurt Juan Ivalo early and often, scoring an early knockdown enroute to a scintillating 1 TKO! Tabanaz landed all 54 of his punches, not allowing Ivalo the chance to even throw a single punch! Vicky Tahumil outboxed a game Eric Jamili to score a 10 round unanimous decision 96-94 98-92 96-94. Wyndel Janiola outboxed Marvin Tampus for a 10 round decision 96-95 96-94 97-93. Janiola landed more than twice the punches, was more than 2 times more accurate than Tampus, yet the judges saw this fight as close? The crowd boo'd the judges, not because Janiola won, but because of the obvious poor judging! Rey Tarazona used a flash knockdown to earn a controversial 96-93 94-95 95-94 split decision over Kaichon Sor Vorapin. I had the fight 97-92 Sor Vorapin, as did Jim Trunzo. Compubox showed Sor Vorapin landing more punches in all categories, and had Sor Vorapin landing 294 punches for the fight compared to 198 for Tarazona. The crowd again was incensed at the quality of the officiating! Juan Alfonso Keb Baas outlasted the suprisingly tough Roy Thompson in an action packed 10 round decision. Keb Baas won 98-92 96-93 96-93 in this spirited contest that had the crowd on their feet through most of the fight! Katsuo Tokashiki cut Hwan-Jin Kim enroute to a competitive 10 round split decision 95-96 97-93 96-94. The rounds in this one were so close, that half the crowd agreed, and half the crowd disagreed with the decision. |

I'm using a 3rd party tournament program that sets up the tourney for me. I type the names in, and the tournament places the fighters in an alphabetical sorting.....tis close enough to random for me...lol Makes for some suprising draws, which adds for some interesting fights in the early rounds, that's for sure!

I use The Hat for that as well. I just go in sectors so as not to water down the bracket. I usually sort everyone 9 and higher for the top seeds and then 8 and down randomly for the resat of the bracket. |
