Iverson to Pistons

Apparantly Allen Iverson is on his way to Detroit. Not sure what to make of this deal.

ESPN - Denver Nuggets trade Allen Iverson to Detroit Pistons

Huge win for Denver -- that's what to make of it. Hopefully after this year Dumars will do the smart thing and finally start rebuilding.

Didn't Denver just take on a really expensive and long term contract (Billups) while offing an expiring deal (Iverson) though?

Pretty much.

Great trade for Detroit. Either Iverson ignites the team and they get farther than they would have with an over-the-hill Billups or if that doesn't happen they just let him walk at the end of the year and are left with a ton of cap space.

I don't see how this trade benefited Denver one bit.

Chancy is a big name, even if he is getting long in the tooth. The name alone might put some more butts in the seats. And lets face it he can dish the ball, which is something Iverson just doesn't do as well.

He's not putting more butts in the seats than iverson.

Iverson has also averaged more assists per game (though just very slightly more and in probably more minutes and playing at a higher pace) than Billups the last two seasons.

This theory that Iverson is some sort of black hole just isn't true. The guy has averaged more than 7 assists per game each of the last 4 seasons.

Billups is certainly more of a floor general but Iverson is one of the more gifted passers the NBA has to offer.

Iverson is more a focal point of his team's offense, although I don't know if this is by design or simply an accident of the Pistons' balance in recent years. Iverson's usage rate has been above 25% even on that Nuggets team, while Billups has used only slightly more than his share of possessions.

Iverson is a better primary weapon than Billups, or seems to be, even at this stage in their careers. By that I mean Iverson seems to create more shots directly, either for himself or for others, than Billups does. Billups is useful, but I don't perceive him to be in Iverson's class.

I think Denver did pretty well for themselves in the deal, anyway. Not because they directly gained a more valuable player than they lost, but because they can reshape their rotation in what appears to be a better arrangement. J.R. Smith, in particular... head case or not, I believe he can fill Iverson's old role capably.

His assists are irrelevant to that argument. The point is that with Iverson he has to dominate the ball to be effective, as he dances around with the dribble to find a seam in the defense.

I don't see why it isn't obvious how the trade benefits Denver. McDyess improves their front line and while AI is a better player than Billups, Chauncey is a better fit, being a more physical player and not taking the ball away from Melo nearly as much.

Because McDyess simply isn't very good anymore. He will add very little to that team and the Nuggets instead of just giving it one last go with AI and Carmelo will now have their hands tied financially and a less talented roster.

It was pointless for Denver to make a move like this unless the player they were getting in return was going to make them a finals contender, this move certainly didn't do that.

They could be a mediocre team with Iverson this year and actually have some financial flexibility after this season, not anymore.

This was simply making a move just for the sake of change, rarely does that end well.

Dola,

It's being reported that McDyess won't even play for Denver and that he will either retire or negotiate a buyout and end up back in Detroit anyway.
