Linux: Unable to open external browser windows

Version: 9.2.6
OS: Linux (Ubuntu 8.10 - 64 bit)
Problem: OOTP will not open external windows (e.g. "Buy OOTP Baseball" on home page, "Purchase OOTP now" from demo page, and even "check for updates" from within the game).
What happened: The cursor switches to a small wrist watch for a few seconds then nothing.
Reproducible? Yes - same problem from multiple areas to open external window.

Similar to BZ1687, external windows won't open in OOTP. I've allowed pop-ups in Firefox, but still nothing.

Any idea if I'm missing a needed library or if there is an incompatibilty with the 64 bit operating system?

Nevermind - after two days of dealing with conflicts between the OS and everything on the computer, I've switched back to windows (where OOTP has been running without a problem).
