Can Pitchers win Rookie of the Year?

Tried searching, but didn't see anything relevant. I know in previous SI-modeled versions of the game, the AI had no issue giving a pitcher the Rookie of the Year (ROY) award. However, I've been playing a MLB continuation dynasty in OOTP9 (from 2008 to 2023 so far), and I realized today that in the 15 seasons I've simmed, a pitcher has never won that award. It may not be that unusual, and I probably wouldn't have even noticed it, but...

A rookie pitcher, Curt Austin, was 22-3, with a 3.30 ERA and 183 Ks - leading the American League in wins, shutouts and VORP (55.9). He also started and won the All-Star game. Not surprisingly, Austin took home the Cy Young award for his season - but lost out on the Rookie of the Year award.

Instead, the AI awarded it to Javier Garcia, a catcher who had a fine season -- 293/.342/.459, with 16 HRs and 93 RBIs (36.2 VORP). I've noticed that the AI typically sorts goes by VORP when assigning awards - so I could see Austin losing out on the ROY if a batter out-VORP'd him, but that clearly wasn't the case this year.

Can the AI give a pitcher Rookie of the Year? Or, do I need to do manual assignment? I like the randomness / suspense of waiting for the awards announcement, but I can't see a scenario IRL where Austin wouldn't also take the ROY.

Thanks.

yes the AI will award a pitcher the rookie of the year sometimes.

Not sure how it decides, but I have seen what you are talking about when a position player robs the award from a very good rookie pitcher.

I've seen a rookie closer win it, but there was a singular lack of rookies in the league that year.

Don't forget that you can pick the awards manually, so if you felt a particular rookie pitcher deserved it, then you can have him win.

Last season in my sim(1905),Brooklyn Superbas pitcher Harry McIntyre was the NL rookie of the year with a 15-20 record,2.22 ERA,316 IP,172 K's,44.4 VORP.So yes the AI will choose pitchers as ROY's
