Each player has a 5 yr "automatic" renewal when he come to the majors. The way to know when a player needs to be resigned isn't by looking at his "player card", but at the bottom of the team roster screen it will tell who you need to "renew" yourself.

Just like in the major leagues the player has a contract for 1 year which is automatically renewed at the teams discretion until the player is eligible for free agency (5 years)... if you don't like the player at the end of the season you can release him at no cost to you, if you do you get him again next year at the low salary.
