Flashback League 1910 Recaps/Timelines

Flashback Baseball League - 1910 in a nutshell

After hanging tough but still trailing the Detroit Tigers for most of the season, the New York Highlanders finally managed to take the lead for good when Detroit, still reeling from losing CF Ty Cobb (.308 4 HR's 51 SB .413 OBP) to a broken hand, lost 6 straight games with 2 weeks left in the season. Detroit managed to win their last 6 games of the season, but by then it was too late. The Highlanders team BA of .239 tied them with Detroit for the 2nd worst team BA in the Flashback Baseball League (only the Chicago WhiteSox were worse with a .237 team BA), but the New York pitching staff was tops in the Flashback League with a 2.53 team ERA. The New York staff was led by the American League A.G. Spalding Award winner George McQuillan (22-12 2.11 ERA in 307.2 IP) and 21 game winner Rube Kroh (21-15 2.22 ERA in 348.2 IP). 38 year old Deacon Phillippe chipped in 17 wins, but also managed to lose 19 in the process (17-19 2.84 ERA in 329.2 IP). Detroit's pitching staff is also kept them competitive, with a Flashback League 2nd best 2.82 team ERA. Top hurlers for the Tigers were George McConnell (19-16 2.88 ERA 133 BB's in 324.2 IP), Bill Dinneen (17-11 2.67 ERA in 266.1 IP), and Andy Coakley (13-9 2.49 in 195 IP). Also on the Detroit roster was the American League Most Valuable Player Award winner, RF Sam Crawford (.296 BA 9 HR's 80 RBI's 92 Runs Scored), who won his 3rd straight AL MVP Award, and American League Rookie of the Year winner LF Dutch Zwilling (.287 4 HR's 88 RBI's 31 Doubles)

The St. Louis Browns led the AL in team BA at .253, but they were dead last in OBP with only a .295 team OBP. Browns stars included RF Fred Clarke (.296 BA 65 runs scored 14 triples) and pitcher Nap Rucker (17-14 2.48 ERA in 290 IP). 1909 AL A.G Spalding Award winner Chief Bender (12-23 3.19 ERA in 330 IP) was a complete failure for the Washington Nationals having his worst season ever as a starting pitcher. Also losing 20 games for the Nationals was Tully Sparks (16-20 3.24 ERA in 303 IP). Suffering from injuries to pitchers Noodles Hahn (11-19 2.87 ERA in 2.76 IP), Jake Thielman (8-9 3.68 ERA in 164 IP), and Mike Lynch (6-11 3.52 ERA in 122.2 IP) the Philadelphia Athletics will receive the 1st pick in the 1911 Amatuer Draft after posting a Flashback League worst 65-89 record.

In the National League there were still 3 teams in the hunt with only 1 week left in the season, with the New York Giants leading the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs by 2 games. The Cubs lost 7 of their last 10 games to fall out of the race, and Philadelphia defeated the Giants in the last 3 games of the season, including a 1 game playoff at the end, to clinch the National League Championship. Philadelphia was led by a pitching staff that trailed only the New York Giants in team ERA at 2.97. Top pitchers for the Phillies included Bugs Raymond (18-11 2.77 ERA in 286 IP), Frank Arellanes (17-17 2.99 ERA in 312.2 IP), and Christy Mathewson (19-18 3.56 ERA in 333.1 IP). Philadelphia CF Cy Seymour (.339 BA 4 HR's 78 runs scored, 74 RBI's and 33 SB's) won his 2nd straight National League Most Valuable Player Award and 3rd in the last 4 seasons. The Giants managed a team ERA of 2.90 led by National League A.G. Spalding Award winner Heinie Berger (20-14 2.41 ERA in 332.2 IP) and Fred Anderson (19-14 2.23 ERA in 298.2 IP).

The defending World Champion Chicago Cubs led the Flashback League in BA at .266 and was 2nd in the Flashback League behind Brooklyn with a .348 team SLG. Top hitters for the Cubs included 2B Nap Lajoie (.296 BA 3 HR's 60 RBI's 100 runs scored 36 doubles), 1B Fred Ludereus (.265 BA 5 HR's 95 RBI's), LF John Titus (.316 BA 1 HR 55 RBI's 30 doubles), and CF Moose McCormick (.284 BA 1 HR 84 RBI's). New York hitters were led by SS Al Bridwell (.322 BA .413 OBP 56 RBI's 62 runs scored), LF Jack Lelivelt (.304 BA 1 HR 86 RBI's 74 runs scored), and RF Joe Birmingham (.319 BA 66 RBI's 65 runs scored). Flashback Baseball League 1910 World Series

Highlanders sweep Phillies in repeat of 1908 World Series

The World Series was a rematch of the 1908 World Series which saw the New York Highlanders sweep Philadelphia in 4 games, but was expected to be a close affair this time.

Game 1 saw Philadelphia jump to an early 3-0 lead behind a 1st inning run and a C Pat Moran 2 run HR in the 3rd off of Highlanders starter George McQuillan. Philadelphia starter Christy Mathewson worked out of a brilliant bases loaded jam in the 6th after allowing a run in the 4th, but by the 9th inning Mathewson seemed to run out of steam. New York rallied from behind, tying it up at 3 with a 2 out pinch hit single by Gavy Cravath, and taking the lead on a bases loaded single by 1B Hal Chase to give New York a 5-3 lead. New York tacked on 2 more runs to make it a 6 run inning and to win the game 7-3.

Game 2 saw New York jump to a 3-0 lead after 2 innings, but Philadelphia tied the game, until the 9th inning, when New York loaded the bases with 1 out. 1B Hal Chase then lifted a sacrifice fly to scored RF Jimmy Slagle to give New York a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Philadelphia had men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but New York starter Rube Kroh got Phillies CF Cy Seymour to ground out to 2B and to give the Highlanders a 2-0 Series lead.

In Game 3 Philadelphia jumped on veteran pitcher Deacon Phillippe for 2 runs in the 1st inning, but New York took the lead 3-2 in the 2nd on 3 hits and a 3B Jim Doyle 2 run error. Highlanders C Billy Kelly, starting in place of Roger Bresnahan, was all over Phillies starter Bugs Raymond, going 4-4 with 3 RBI's and a run scored. Raymond also walked 6 in route to a 9-2 New York rout to put Philadelphia in a 3 games to none hole.

In Game 4, Philadelphia CF Vin Campbell hit a solo HR in the 1st inning off of starter George McQuillan, but both starting pitchers pitched solidly until the 8th inning. In the 8th, New York took the lead 3-2 on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by SS Freddy Parent, then tacked on another run with a RBI single by C Billy Kelly, and 2 more with a 2 run single by RF Jimmy Slagle to head into the 9th inning with a 6-2 lead. 3 up 3 down in the 9th for Philadelphia gives the New York Highlanders their 2nd World Championship in franchise history !

The World Series Most Valuable Player Award voting was very close, but the voters chose Highlanders pitcher and winner of Games 1 and 4 George McQuillan (2-0 2.65 ERA 17 IP 15 H 5 ER in playoffs).
