Not sure why but somehow I can accept a guy hitting the ground with his bat rather than in the dugout hitting stuff. Maybe it is the immediacy of the moment? Not like when Beckett gave up one little run in the sixth against the Astros and freaked out in the dugout, picking up a bat and hammering it repeatedly against some stuff. Crazy. Child-like. Pathetic.
haha - maple bats. what crap. "Maple bat shard flies into crowd, piercing child in eye" - yeah, then they'd get up and mosey on the issue, I guess.

The sad thing about Tulowitzki is he said an ash bat would have done the same thing. Some people never learn... at least the stupid ones. Anybody with any sense at all knows that maple bats are shattering and they are dangerous. A coach and an umpire have been hit already. When are MLB and the stupid players going to rid the game of them. Someone is going to get seriously hurt...a player, umpire...or maybe even a fan. Come on Selig and Fehr. Do something good for baseball and ban maple bats. Last edited by Eugene Church; 07-06-2008 at 07:59 PM. |

Because of the Collective Bargaining Agreement Selig cannot ban maple bats (its not within his power to do so). It must be negotiated with the union (players).
See the following quote (contained in the second link): So when in 2006 MLB broached the issue of maple bats during the collective-bargaining negotiations, it did not go well. The union wasn’t receptive to a unilateral ban and didn’t budge at the thought of at least imposing specifications to lessen the likelihood of breakage. The dimensions of bats are also contained in the CBA: the current CBA specifies that bat handles can be no thinner than 16/19-of-an-inch in diameter. Rules also call for the barrel to be no more than 2 inches in diameter. Banning maple bats is not the answer | MLB.com: News Baseball at breaking point over maple bats - MLB - Yahoo! Sports |

Interesting reading. I still think they should be banned. The difference in maple and ash bats is psychological. Tests have shown that the ball goes just as far with either. Ash is much safer. |
