NEW YORKERS RAMPAGE
Koufax, Greenberg Star in Sweep of Maine

ALBANY, N.Y. (Apr. 6) -- New York surged to the top of the New England division with a three-game sweep of Maine in the States League's opening weekend. The New Yorkers outscored their woefully overmatched opponents 37-6 in a display of complete and utter domination. The 12-0 season opener was the most impressive, with Sandy Koufax (right) throwing a 3-hit shutout, striking out 16, with the support of six home runs, including three in the 7-run eighth inning. The Empire State pounded out 17 home runs, for a .879 slugging percentage, in the three-game set. Second ranked New York next hosts third-ranked Pennsylvania for a three-game set.

Deep Bench Produces Key Pinch Hits in Comebacks
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Apr. 6) -- The Golden Boys overcame 3-0 and 5-1 deficits to take the first two games from divisional rivals Oklahoma this weekend. After Randy Johnson gave up three runs in the first two innings in game one, Stan Hack's 2-run homer sliced the lead to 3-2, Murray singled home Bonds in the sixth, and Ted Williams' pinch double plated the winning run in the seventh.
In the second game, the Okies took a 5-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth. With Frank Linzy on the mound, Joe DiMaggio's double play inched the visitors just one out from victory. But Linzy walked the next three batters and Gary Carter slapped a two-run single to set up Joe Cronin's game-winning pinch single.
Oklahoma took the final game 11-0. Mantle and Stargell each homered, as Allie Reynolds beat Lefty Gomez.
