League of all-time greats
I was playing out games in a historical league, enjoying reviewing the stats of players I came across from the other teams. Players whose names I was familiar with, but had not ever studied their stats. Anyway it occurred to me that I could create a league where all the opponents would be great players from the past. It seemed like an interesting project.
The idea would be to import great players into a league of say 32 teams. 32 teams of 25 players would be 800. That seems like it would be pretty cool. But this would be quite an undertaking...probably bigger than any other OOTP project I had ever worked on. Has anyone ever done something like this? Does such a league file already exist, available for download? Hopefully if I completed such a project it could be available for download, maybe others would be interested in getting the league. Then the question of how to go about choosing the players. I went to the hall of fame, and it looks like there are 286 hall of famers. That would be a start, but 514 players would remain to be picked. If I covered the years 1901 to 2000, that would be about 8 players per year. How to sift through the various years...would I load a historical game league from each year and hand pick the best players? Maybe I could get by with just loading a league of players from each decade? Maybe I should use a reference book or web site that listed the league leaders from each year? What criteria would I use? Career totals, season highs,...ERA, wins, batting average, OPS? I'd want to make sure I covered each position, so I couldn't just take the league leaders...need representatives of each position. Does anyone have any suggestions? Last edited by jmknpk2; 01-04-2009 at 06:48 PM. |

There was a roster set called Franchise Stars from a couple of editions ago that did this for each franchise. If you have old versions you may be able to import it through the recent versions and get it into your current game.

A project like this is one of the things I've always wanted to do with OOTP. Unfortunately, it's too tedious (at least for me) to edit the Lahman database, especially for fielding. If OOTP10 allows you to input stats and get ratings, I'll make this set. I already have a spreadsheet with all the players, stats, and teams (including a Negro League team).

I had a dynasty league, the Alltime All-Star Association. I selected the 25 greatest players on each of the 16 original franchises. I also included Negro greats and Japanese greats. I had a special draft and placed 48 Negro greats and Japanese greats on the teams, one a year for three years.
I just went to Baseball-Reference and research the best 9 pitchers, 3 catchers, 6 infielders and 5 outfielders for each of the major league teams. I ran it for 11 seasons and then my computer died and stupidly I only backed up the first three seasons. It was a great league. I personally entered all of the ratings for each player using stats from Baseball-Reference. It took a lot of work, but it was worth it. The Baseball-Reference Positional and Pitching Charts were very helpful in finding the best player at each position for each team. You can read about the Alltime-All-Star Association here: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...operation.html Last edited by Eugene Church; 01-07-2009 at 06:09 PM. |
