Tampa Bay Rays guaranteed to be over .500 on May 1

And they're in first place.

Canned food, check. Water, check. Bunker/shelter, check.

Rays are looking good this year! Glad to see their fans have something to cheer about now!

That's what I was thinking. They are better this year, but I think they still will be at or near the bottom of the fish tank, where rays usually hang out.

In 2 years, look the hell out.

2B Iwamura
LF Crawford
1B Pena
CF Upton
3B Longoria
DH Gomes
SS Brignac
RF Hinske
C Navarro

Kazmir
Shields
Garza
Price
Davis/McGee/Tiffany

If they can get another solid bullpen arm or two that can slot in there with Wheeler and Howell, that's going to be an awfully good team.

I think something is changing. The last win with the Red Sox was quite impressive. And Shields really made a gem. I don't know for this year, maybe next year....or, with some good luck....

Somehow, I just don't see Eric Hinske playing RF for the Rays in two years.

I'm amazed he's playing as well as he is. It's surprising to say the least.

And the Rays are now:

Back in first by a half-game.
Seven games over .500.
On a six-game winning streak.

The shelter is still fully stocked.

I don't know whether I was imagining reading this but the Rays have never ever in their history been 5 or 6 games over .500... is that true?

obviously it's not now because they are.

Yes, it appears the Rays are about to emerge from "pesky" status to "contenders." Still, it's a long season.

If their pitching holds up, I think they will remain in contention all year.

Good job Rays. It's only taken them 11 seasons to finally look decent. They do need a new ballpark, though.

Hey, they've done a lot better than their 1998 expansion brother Arizona....not.

Sources have confirmed that Scott Kazmir will sign a long term deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. Terms have not been disclosed. The team will announce the deal this evening.

Update: Terms are 3 years, $28.5m guaranteed with a team option for 2012 at $11m.

That's a really, really good deal for Tampa as long as Kazmir's healthy.
